ach year, during the third weekend in

July, the riverside town of Danville, PA

holds a grand celebration of its rich history

and heritage The Danville Heritage Festival

provides a chance for both locals and visitors

alike to recall the vibrant history of the region

while enjoying the flavors and culture of the

present community

Danville’s history includes a documented role

in the westward expansion of America through

its ties to the growth of the railroad industry

In days gone by, the mountains surrounding

this quaint town provided narrow seams of high

quality iron ore, anthracite coal and limestone

to the community – the ideal combination for

iron production This abundance of natural

resources, combined with the multitude of

Welsh, Irish and German immigrants in the

area who became employed as puddlers and

miners, created an iron industry mecca that

spurred growth and prosperity in Danville for

many years In the 1850’s, the country could

hardly sustain the rapid rise of the expanding

railroad industry By this point, Danville had

forged a reputation as an iron-making titan,

and the town created and manufactured the

very first iron “T” rail in the country At one point,

over 1,000 people were employed in the iron production industry in Danville Many of the 18th-century mansions in town were financed

by the iron and coal industries

As the early twentieth century dawned, another industry began to rise in town-healthcare

In 1910, a tiny woman with a generous heart, Abigail Geisinger, founded Geisinger Medical Center Today, Geisinger has grown into one of the most revered hospital systems in the country

The main campus in Danville has well over 500 beds and employs more than 5,000 workers

Geisinger Health System now serves more than 1.5 million patients across 13 regional branch campuses, and employs more than 30,000 healthcare workers in total

From iron to healthcare, Danville’s rich heritage inspired its people to create the Heritage Festival

The festivities customarily begin with a Friday evening parade and block party in downtown

Saturday is always the busiest day, with many events scheduled from dawn until well after dark One of the highlights of the weekend is a grand display of fireworks over the Susquehanna River on Saturday evening The Festival concludes

on Sunday morning after a traditional hymn sing and service on the peaceful banks of the Susquehanna

By: Eugene R Shipe & Christine B Shipe

OVER 1,000 PEOPLE WERE EMPLOYED IN THE IRON PRODUCTION INDUSTRY

The Festival encompasses several areas in and around Danville A spot outside town on State Route 642 West showcases possibly the oldest commercial cider press in the country The

“walk around” that used to power the apple grinder is still intact In addition to the historic

1865 cider press, visitors can also find the Franklin Furnace on site This bank blast furnace models the same design as the first successful blast furnace in America, one built in Boston in

1650 During its time in operation, it produced approximately 45 tons of crude iron per week

Informal talks are given throughout the weekend for interested visitors

In Danville, Hess Field becomes the hub of Saturday activities Once referred to by locals as

“the flats,” Hess Field is a beautiful open space nestled in a gap of the Montour Ridge section

of the Allegheny Mountains Throughout the day, log splitters, pottery makers, weavers and blacksmiths give demonstrations and show off their talents Additional demonstrations include limestone burning, “Sherman Necktie”

making, and various period-specific activities

An antique car show, live entertainment, and local food vendors round out the educational and enjoyable day of festivities

A multitude of competitions and recreation opportunities are also held at Hess Field and neighboring locations on Saturday One of the highlights of the games is the quoits contest This competition is open to the public with “ringers”

vying to be declared champion At the nearby middle school, a tennis tournament is held

A Saturday morning bike ride allows riders to view several abandoned mines and learn a bit about the history of mining in the area at the same time Avid runners can enter the annual 5K Run, held in honor of the Festival The race

is held on the historic J Manley Robbins rail trail, which is the oldest known rail trail in the United States

A myriad of other trails in the area create a perfect excuse to spend the entire weekend in Danville while attending the Heritage Festival The Montour Preserve is situated just a short drive north of town and boasts a 165-acre lake, hiking trails, a fossil pit, an educational nature center, picnic pavilions, and much more Hopewell Park on Route 11 has been transformed into a mountain biking paradise with trails that run up and down the hillside

On Ferry Street in downtown Danville, the Thomas Beaver Library is open for visitors to tour the original limestone building with pristine original wooden floors, and a stained glass ceiling

On the Saturday of the Festival, experts on a variety of topics are often available to educate and entertain Local churches in town also host programs on everything from gravestone symbols to period fashion Visitors looking to explore some of the other historic parts of town during the weekend are encouraged to download the Historic Walk Danville mobile app or pick

up a copy of the brochure from the Columbia Montour Visitors Bureau’s Welcome Center

in Bloomsburg A walk through the streets of Danville is a study of 19th century architecture: Federal, Second Empire, Italianate, Colonial or Classic Revival, Victorian, and Queen Anne Visitors are welcomed with open arms to come share the history of Danville! angling destinations and diverse species within a few minutes’ drive For a quick lakeside shore-fishing outing, take a walk into the Bloomsburg Town Park and find a variety of species including largemouth bass, crappie, and trout For a more secluded experience, Weiser State Forest – Roaring Creek Tract near Numidia offers a chain of three wooded reservoirs and a connecting creek The first reservoir closest

to the parking area is easily accessible to all anglers, while the second and third require a mild hike to reach much more unpressured and isolated fishing waters An abundance of pickerel, yellow perch, and largemouth bass can be found throughout the reservoirs

If fishing isn’t your sole purpose for outdoor adventure in the area, Ricketts Glen State Park may

be the perfect destination to do a bit of everything

Visitors can swim at a designated beach area along the shore of tranquil Lake Jean, rent kayaks and paddleboats, or wet a line for largemouth bass, northern pike, or yellow perch If planning to stay for several days, you can even rent a cabin along the lake and take some time to hike the stunning Falls Trail loop to see 21 named waterfalls

The Columbia and Montour County area offers opportunities for any angler, whether casting a baited hook, lure, or a handtied fly The river, creeks, and lakes are home to trout, pickerel, smallmouth bass, northern pike, largemouth bass, channel and bullhead catfish, bluegill, yellow perch, walleye, carp, panfish, crappie and muskellunge Visit the region in spring and experience the tremendously popular opening day of trout season, or during summer for great river smallmouth fishing Take in

fall foliage along Fishing Creek and the Susquehanna River, or join in on outstanding winter ice fishing

on one of the local lakes Any day of the year is a great day for fishing in the counties, so grab your gear and hit the water – the fish are waiting!

With four seasons of natural beauty and endless

outdoor activities, visitors are invited to explore

Columbia and Montour Counties from the water

The two counties are especially rich in outdoor

fishing tradition The region is filled with small,

quaint towns nestled along the North Branch of the

Susquehanna River and its tributary creeks These

waters have a long history related to fishing, from

pre-colonial Native Americans, to commercial shad

and eel fisheries, to modern recreational trout and

bass fishing The Susquehanna River is considered

one of the world’s top smallmouth bass fishing

destinations, and Fishing Creek, which flows

approximately 30 miles through the region and

into the Susquehanna, draws avid fly anglers from

around the world Enjoy fishing the Susquehanna

from a kayak, canoe, small watercraft, or from

its shores along the river towns of Berwick,

Bloomsburg or Danville

When fishing the North Branch of the Susquehanna

River the typical angler seeks out the famed local

smallmouth bass, but there is also an abundance

of walleye, muskellunge, channel catfish, northern

pike, sunfish, and carp Whether you are shore

fishing, wading, paddling, or on a powerboat, you

are only feet away from many of these species

Anglers regularly land channel catfish, ranging in

size up to 36 inches, directly from the shoreline

at Test Track Park in Berwick, Bloomsburg Town Park, and many other publicly accessible areas

Wade fishermen can walk a few feet out onto gravel bars and either reel in the smallmouth of a lifetime or land an outstanding table fare-walleye

Cast a line into a shoreline eddy and you might be surprised by the “fish of 10,000 casts,” a muskellunge, which may weigh close to 50 pounds!

For a scenic fishing experience, drive north from Bloomsburg on Route 487 along Fishing Creek Fishing Creek is exceptionally picturesque, and anglers can also appreciate several historic covered bridges that span its waters The drive also passes numerous public fishing accesses, such as Kocher Park, and meanders through small towns and valleys While wading in Fishing Creek, throwing a handtied fly, and taking in the sights and smells of the surrounding forest, anglers will likely forget that they are only a few hours away from the bustling New York City and Philadelphia metro areas The Fishing Creek area also offers world-class guided trout fishing opportunities for those looking to receive some expert guidance

While the Susquehanna River and Fishing Creek are well known throughout the fishing community, there are also many other fantastic

complement a wide range of appetizing meals prepared at Amici’s Rock God Brewery, one

of the newest area businesses to be a part of the weeklong event, hosted area food trucks at their brewery in Danville along with live music Not to be outdone, Profile Coffee of Elysburg and Fog & Flame Coffee of Bloomsburg also participated, with discounts on coffee and other purchases

The second annual Columbia Montour Restaurant Week is already in the works and

is slated to be held March 29th – April 7th, 2019 The addition of an extra day this year allows curious diners to revisit known favorites as well as find new eateries they’ve yet to try This week and a half long event is sure to be

a taste-tempting experience for all who want

to try new cuisines, listen to local musicians, and enjoy amazing savings at the same time Come out and make a day, a weekend, or even

a week of it - you won’t walk away hungry!

service along with the always fun and unique atmosphere that the restaurant boasts The only drawback was trying to decide which beer paired best with your meal due to the wide selection that they offer!

Just across the Susquehanna River in Danville, the historic and local favorite Pine Barn Inn offered a three course “Chefs’ Menu” Customers began with a choice of several salad choices before moving to the entrée selection which included three choices The Celtic Filet Mignon,

a coffee rubbed chargrilled 8 oz filet napped with a Jameson Whiskey demi-glace, was a sure favorite of the week Each meal was topped off

by a decadent homemade dessert made by the Inn’s own inhouse pastry chef

Traditional restaurants and eateries were not the only businesses to enjoy the celebration planned by local restaurateurs and the Columbia Montour Visitors Bureau Breweries and wineries were also excited to join in In Berwick, Freas Farm Winery paired up with Amici’s Italian Grill

n March 2018, when most people were

feeling the crisp outdoor air of winter

slowly warm to welcome spring, many

folks in Columbia and Montour Counties

were enjoying the robust indoor aromas

of the establishments participating in the

counties’ first annual Restaurant Week Close to 30

businesses participated in this nine day culinary

festivity that showcased an eclectic mix of cuisine

spanning all corners of the area

Beginning Friday, March 16th, the kick-off

weekend found area businesses like The Inn

at Turkey Hill outside of Bloomsburg, Pub II in

Danville, and The Brass Pelican Restaurant

outside of Benton full of eager diners ready to

take advantage of new menu items and special

features specifically put in place for the event

Patrons were not disappointed, as they were

treated to the best creations area chefs had to offer

When possible, a number of the participating

culinary teams sourced ingredients from local

farms and growers Utilizing local resources

provided a great opportunity for participating

restaurants to support and showcase the entire

region, and Restaurant Week truly emerged as

a community effort

The weekend continued in style for those

with a soft spot for Irish dishes, as Old Forge

Brewing Company in Danville offered traditional

Irish features all day on Sunday, March 17th in

celebration of St Patrick’s Day Throughout the week,

they also offered a special three-course dinner

for $30 At Seidel’s Mardi Gras on Route 11, classic

New Orleans specials were served up all week

From blackened Cajun catfish to homemade chicken and sausage gumbo, the flavors of the south permeated Restaurant Week in Central

PA In Bloomsburg, Marley’s Brewery & Grille embraced the local aspect and specifically incorporated local, seasonal produce into their entrée specials In Catawissa, Woody’s Place handed out free coffees all week to diners, and the Nickle Plate Bar & Grille in Elysburg provided half-priced appetizers with the purchase of two meals

The following Monday in Bloomsburg, the residents saw a suddenly bustling community as selfproclaimed foodies made their way around town to take advantage of an abundance of deals

Steph’s Subs, a favorite of locals and college students alike, was even busier than usual as they offered daily lunch specials for each day

of the week On Main Street, Filet 18 offered diners a “Build Your Own Burger Night” along with a specially crafted dinner menu that featured incredible dishes like Pork Belly Tacos and Poutine Baker’s Guild Café was a trendy stop for their healthy and vegan options

They also offered live music both Friday nights during restaurant week and served up a Chana Masala pizza as their special offering

Guests of the Cherokee Tap Room in Riverside were lucky enough to enjoy four brand new types of tacos, newly introduced specifically for Restaurant Week, on their “TGIT Limited and Special Taco Night” which they graciously extended to include Wednesday as well as Tuesday

The delicious fare was complimented by incredible
