PRESIDENT
Good to great … to fantastic
SPRINGTIME IS FINALLY
HERE —it is the season
for celebrating sunnier
skies, warmer days and new
beginnings! I would like to take a moment to begin another
year by celebrating you and all those in the community who
sustain our work Your support is absolutely key to helping
Asante Ashland Community Hospital grow and prosper
through its commitment to excellence and innovation.
I recently heard our CEO, Sheila Clough, describe how things
were going at our hospital in one word—“FANTASTIC!” Later,
she explained why she chose that word:
• The hospital recently received a five-star rating for quality,
safety and service from the national Centers for Medicare &
Medicaid Services (CMS) We are one of only five hospitals
in the state to receive this agency’s highest honor.
• Asante Ashland patients also rank our hospital as one of the
best in the nation Most departments have patient
experi-ence scores at the ninetieth percentile or above Patients
rate their satisfaction with our inpatient services and our
Emergency Department at the ninety-fourth percentile.
• Our hospital is thriving financially, having maintained a
positive operating income for the past four fiscal years
Gone are the days when the hospital operated with a deficit
All this has happened because Sheila and her excellent team of
managers, staff and volunteers (including ACHF Board
mem-bers) have dedicated themselves to moving Asante Ashland
from good to great to fantastic And Sheila’s team includes all of
you—our donors—who provide the inspiration and resources
necessary for excellence You are our partners, our friends and
our neighbors, whose generous philanthropy plays a crucial role
in the success of our wonderful community hospital.
Thank you for what you do to make Asante Ashland a
commu-nity hospital we can all be proud of and a place where we know
we will receive expert healthcare and services with kindness and
compassion, whenever needed.
Sincerely,
JOY DOBSON WAY, RN (RET.), MSN
MEET OUR NEW BOARD MEMBER
Foundation welcomes Linda Butler
BORN IN LONG BEACH, California, Linda
is the youngest of four children and the only girl She spent her childhood outdoors with her brothers, playing any game that required a ball
or took place on the beach Hers was a close-knit family with the
success of each celebrated by all
Linda attended California State University at Long Beach and gradu-ated with a degree
in sociology She was on the Sailing Team and tutored underprivileged youth through
an organization called Project Tutor Upon gradu-ation, she enrolled in classes at UCLA, where her love of accounting flourished Linda worked for a CPA firm in Torrance She met her husband, Chuck, while picking up a friend at the dealership Chuck co-owned Their first date was a Neil Diamond con-cert at the Greek Theatre That was a good start, but
it took three years and eight proposals before she said yes.
Linda and Chuck love the outdoors and decided
to move north to spend more time downhill and cross-country skiing, boating, hiking and backpack-ing They lived a year in Redding before moving north again to a little town in Oregon At the time, they had never even been to Oregon, but they took a chance They have been in Ashland forty-two years now, and two of their children were born here
On arriving in Ashland, they decided to work together to build something for their future Having started with Butler Ford, they now own Acura, Kia and Hyundai franchises.
“We took a chance on Ashland and each other, and
we could not be happier with our decision,” says Linda.
She has a long history of community service, includ-ing servinclud-ing on the Ashland Community Hospital Board of Directors from 2004 to 2013 and Ashland Community Hospital Foundation Evans Nursing Scholarship committee from 2007 to 2013 Please join
us in welcoming Linda Butler to the Ashland Com-munity Hospital Board Foundation of Directors!
Distinguished Service Award goes to Barb and Peg Evans
sisters Barb and Peg Evans the 2017 Distinguished Service Award from Ashland Community Hospital Foundation.
As the daughters of Dr William and Mrs Ruth Evans, Barb and Peg Evans have continued to honor their beloved parents and expand their legacy through ongoing support of the Evans Endowed Nursing Scholarship and other Foundation programs
William Evans was a family physician who practiced for fifty years in Pennsylvania before coming to Ashland in 1998 The family funded medical education scholarships and health proj-ects in Pennsylvania When William died in 2002, Ruth Evans—
a nurse during World War II—established an endowed scholar-ship fund for nurses.
Barb and Peg support the scholarship committee and actively participate in the annual awards luncheon, meeting scholarship recipients.
“It’s so emotional to hear their stories and learn about the hard-ships they have overcome,” Barb says of the dedicated nursing students, who plan to work in the Rogue Valley.
Longtime supporters of the annual Patrons Campaign, the Evans sisters also champion the Foundation by attending other campaign kickoffs and celebrations The family’s connection to the Foundation started soon after Peg moved to Ashland in 1981
to work at Southern Oregon University Recognizing the value
of a community hospital that could conveniently provide basic medical services, she started making annual donations to the ACH Foundation As family members relocated to Oregon, they joined her in supporting the local hospital, too.
“I feel pretty strongly that we need a hospital in Ashland,” Peg says “Ashland is richer for having its hospital.”
Peg is professor emerita of music at SOU and the author of a bibliography of choral works and various articles and reviews She’s spent forty-five years as a church organist and choir director and has given organ recitals and workshops throughout the United States Peg served for four years as the national vice president of the American Guild of Organists and is currently compiling a database of hymn-based organ works for the Church Music Institute, based in Dallas, Texas She is a member, teacher and Council member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Southern Oregon University.
A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Barb Evans per-formed as a professional clarinetist for fourteen years and sang professionally in Iowa City, Iowa She also worked as a certified veterinary technician Barb volunteers weekly at Asante Ashland Community Hospital and particularly enjoys assisting in the ACH Foundation office.
The sisters support philanthropic projects through the South-ern Oregon University Foundation, Pittsburgh Foundation and Oregon Community Foundation They also volunteer together, delivering meals with Food & Friends With their commitments and dedication to projects across Ashland, both Barb and Peg appreciate the ACH Foundation for its professional support of a key institution that fosters a healthy community.
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Foundation, the hospital and Ashland as a whole A committee comprising the Foundation’s stewardship committee, hospital leadership and past award recipients selects who will be honored Please join us
in offering congratulations and gratitude to Barb and Peg Evans.
Ashland is richer for having its hospital.

Patrons Campaign supports Innovation Fund
keep your hometown hospital at the forefront of care with an investment in Ashland Community Hospital Foundation’s newly launched Innovation Fund.
The fund is designed to serve as an overarching home for resources that will help Asante Ashland Community Hospital adopt new technologies and approaches to care when the time
is right As a small community hospital, Asante Ashland has invested strategically and mindfully in new programs and tech-nologies that make a difference in patients’ lives With your help, the hospital can continue to keep pace in today’s rapidly chang-ing healthcare environment, which requires more resources and
a deeper commitment to change than ever before.
Your gift to the Innovation Fund will support three primary approaches: 1) adding advanced technology to benefit patients, 2) adopting new patient-care approaches and 3) forging ground-breaking partnerships in the community.
TECHNOLOGY & EQUIPMENT FOR DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT
Resources from the Innovation Fund will be dedicated to helping the hospital move thoughtfully but quickly to review and pur-chase new equipment to benefit patients Your gift may support robotics or artificial intelligence software that can guide diag-noses and treatment It might educate caregivers on using new technology to improve patient comfort and medical outcomes
NEW MODELS OF CARE
The Innovation Fund will be used to help evaluate and launch pilot programs for new processes that take the hospital even
further in providing quality care and ensuring the best patient outcomes One possibility includes formulating new medical protocols that identify factors affecting mental health and addic-tion The fund could pay for projects to redesign our healing environment to accommodate new practices or even reimagine how, when and where care can be delivered in the community.
COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS
By funding partnerships with other healthcare providers, local businesses, nonprofits, churches and schools, the
Innovation Fund will help new ideas gain traction and reach the community
to deliver improved health for everyone
Imagine community well-ness programs and teams
of providers working together on health educa-tion and disease preven-tion.
Potential projects are under review while other opportunities have yet
to be imagined Your gift might fund initiatives in the near future or create
an endowment to help fund innovation in perpetuity Join us today and help shape the future of healthcare in your community!

REFRESHED!
Donor gives Emergency Department a better break room
THE BUSY CARE TEAM in the Asante Ashland
Community Hospital Emergency Department has a newly
refreshed break room that offers a comfortable space to have
lunch, recharge or just enjoy a quiet moment when things
get stressful Ashland Community Hospital Foundation
Board of Directors and staff, hospital leaders and the
Emergency Department’s staff came together on February 23
to celebrate the completion of a renovation made possible by
the generosity of community member Bob Holbrook
Bob has a soft spot in his heart for the staff at Asante
Ash-land He knows firsthand how hard caregivers work to provide
compassionate, professional care to their patients His positive
experiences at the hospital inspired him to make a Circle of
Caring donation and partner with the Foundation
on several projects that benefited the community, hospi-tal and staff
“I will never forget the quality of care that I received during my various contacts with AACH as a patient and especially the feeling
of being welcomed by a staff whose primary concern was my health and well-being,” Bob said. “My current support reflects the gratitude I feel for the memory of these past experiences
So, while I am happy to have you thank me, the thanks are really due to those who cared for me when I needed their help.”
CEO honors caregivers who treat every patient like a VIP
WHEN ASANTE ASHLAND COMMUNITY
Hospital CEO Sheila Clough was rushed to the Emergency Department in June 2017, she initially was reluctant to get care at the hospital she heads because she did not want to place pressure on the staff.
The registration clerk was kind and friendly and reassured Sheila that everything would remain confidential, just like it does for every patient.
She had an ultrasound procedure, and her caring and
knowl-edgeable caregivers worked with her to weigh the pros and cons
of having the surgery, helping make her decision to have the
immediate procedure.
Prior to her emergency surgery, the anesthesiologist listened to
her fears about anesthesia and the complications she had from
it in the past He adjusted his approach, and she described the
results as the best recovery from surgery she’s ever had.
She experienced a second round of inpatient care as part of her
follow-up to the initial incident and again found kind,
com-passionate care at every step From registration to discharge,
everyone was committed to understanding and supporting her
as a patient.
The nursing shift handoff gave her comfort and confidence
Great communication reduced her fears Her physicians were engaged in her care They respected her choices and kept her husband, Chris, apprised of everything Her care team worked with Nutritional Services and all staff to provide her with the comfort food she was craving.
After experiencing Asante Ashland’s amazing inpatient care, Sheila says she understands why the hospital’s quality, safety and patient satisfactions scores are so high And with stringent confidentiality standards protecting her privacy, most of her colleagues never knew she was a patient.
Beyond her position as CEO at Asante Ashland, Sheila takes an active role in the community, serving as a trustee on the South-ern Oregon University Board, member of the Ashland Cham-ber of Commerce Board of Directors and memCham-ber of the Lithia Springs Rotary Club Like many people dedicated to making Ashland a great place to live, work and play, she decided to honor and preserve the outstanding care she got at her hometown hospital with a Circle of Caring gift And you don’t have to be the CEO to be a healthcare leader who encourages excellence every day Any patient or family member can give a gift of gratitude, harnessing the power of philanthropy the way Sheila did The Foundation’s Circle of Caring
program enables you to say thank-you to a caregiver, team or department with a gift that sup-ports the whole hospital
A GIFT OF GRATITUDE: You can recognize a special caregiver with
a tax-deductible contribution that will support the hospital’s work Donate at
