Workshop #2: Assessing International Police Training to Promote the Rule of
Law and Protect the Population
May 24 and 27, 2021
Purpose: This workshop will explore what is known about the core knowledge and skills needed
for police to promote the rule of law and protect the population In will also examine what is known about mechanisms (e.g basic and continuing education or other capacity building
programs) for developing the core skills needed for police to promote the rule of law and protect the population
This workshop is the second in a series of five workshops conducted by the Committee on
Evidence to Advance Reform in the Global Security and Justice Sectors The workshop will be the primary source of information gathering to support the committee’s brief consensus report on the topic, to be released in winter 2021 Additional research on the subject has been undertaken
in papers written by Drs Lorraine Mazerolle and Tamara D Herold, the findings from which will be presented on day 1 and the final papers published alongside the final report
Workshop Objectives:
Develop a shared understanding of what is known regarding the core knowledge and skills needed for police to promote the rule of law and protect the population
Develop a shared understanding of what is known regarding the mechanisms and
methodology (e.g basic and continuing education or other capacity building programs) for developing the core skills needed for police to promote the rule of law and protect the population
Identify areas where additional research is necessary to further develop the evidence base
as it relates to police training to promote the rule of law and protect the population
