The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC)

program is designed to provide quality flood maps, other tools including data, and support to assist communities in taking action to reduce flood risk

The Discovery process of FEMA’s Risk MAP program is about the “discovery” of flood hazards and flood risk in a particular watershed As part of the North Country Watersheds Discovery project, FEMA and NYSDEC will work closely with local communities and organizations to collect

information about flood mapping needs, including flooding issues and flood mitigation activities; recent development; and other issues related to flood risk

Your involvement in this project is very important because the information collected will be used to develop recommendations for a future Risk MAP project that may be initiated if funding is available Such a follow up project could include the creation of digital flood maps, risk

assessment or mitigation planning assistance

NYSDEC and FEMA recently conducted Pre-Discovery webinars to present an overview of the project The next step will be in-person Discovery Meetings for communities, agencies, interested organizations and watershed groups During the meetings, we will review flood risk data collected, discuss local floodplains, mitigation plans, and flood risk concerns, and the vision of the watershed’s future Attendees will be able to meet one-on- one with project team members to discuss local flooding issues, provide feedback on existing community floodplain maps, and learn more about programs and activities that may help reduce flood risk
