Expert: 3) "OK, now, s t a r t pumping"

The example is constructed to i l l u s t r a t e my p o i n t , but i t does not " f e e l " a r t i f i c i a l Experiments we are conducting show analogous phenomena in telephone and teletype modes The theory predicts two inference paths For utterance

I - - " h e l p f u l " and "intended" In the Former case, the novice observes the surface-lnform speech act indicated

by a declarative utterance, and interprets i t simply as

an inform act that communicates a j o i n t need Then, be- cause the novice is h e l p f u l , she continues to recognize the plan behind the expert's utterance and attempts to

f u r t h e r i t by performing the action o f putting the spout over the hole The novice, therefore, is acting on her own, evaluating the reasonableness o f the plan inferred

f o r the expert using private b e l i e f s about the expert's

b e l i e f s and intentions A l t e r n a t i v e l y , she could i n f e r that the expert intended for i t to be mutually believed that he intended her to put on the tube Thus, the novice would be acting because she thinks the expert intended

f o r her ¢o do so Later, she could summarize the expert's utterance and intentions as a request ~7] Perrault and Alien supply heuristics that would predlct-~" the preferred inference route to be the "intended" path since i t is mutually believed that putting the tube on is the relev- ant a c t , and h i s i n t e n d i n g t h a t she p e r f o r m p u m p - r e l a t e d
