FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Montana State University Department of Botany has been granted

three National Defense Education Act fellowships for three-year stipends

amounting to $6,600 each, or a total of $19,800, Dr R A Diettert,

department chairman, announced.

Each fellow will receive a stipend of $2,000 the first year, $2,200

the second, and $2,^00 the third, Dr Diettert said Each fellow will also

receive $^00 a year for each dependent.

In addition, the department will receive approximately $2,500 a year

for each fellow for use in developing the Ph D program in forestry and

plant sciences approved last spring by the State Board of Regents.

The NDEA awards have a twofold purpose, according to Dr Diettert

First, they encourage and assist graduate students to prepare for careers

as teachers in the nation’s colleges and universities Second, by making

the fellowships tenable in new or expanded programs at particular graduate

schools, they increase the facilities available for the graduate training

of college or university teachers and promote a wider geographical distri

bution of such facilities throughout the nation.
