The Montana S tate U niversity w rite rs' conference, which runs from July 16
through the 21st, has the la rg est o u t-o f-state re g istra tio n in i t s h isto ry
according to H V Laron, d ire c to r Conferees frcm fifte e n sta te s and Washington,
D C are expected to arriv e in time fo r the f i r s t session M innesota, Idaho,
Colorado, Washington, C alifo rn ia, Pennsylvania, I llin o is , Texas, North Dakota,
M assachusetts, Oregon, Maryland, Michigan, and Nevada w ill have a t le a s t one
rep resen tativ e, Larom said
"We are not eager fo r more o u t-o f-sta te stu d en ts," he added, "but we are
holding open places fo r Montanans because, although the conference is n atio n al
in scope, it s primary purpose is to help Montana w riters and to give them a chance
to have th e ir work c ritic iz e d by n atio n ally known authors such as W alter Van
Tilburg Clark; A J M Smith, a leading Canadian poet; Dorothy Johnson; and
Louis Vaczek, a n o v elist of in te rn a tio n a l in trig u e as w ell as a w rite r of
m ysteries."
Some stre ss w ill be given th is year to w riting fo r children, Larom reported
Gladys Bond of Kellogg, Idaho, is a s p e c ia lis t in the w riting of magazine fic tio n
for young people, and she w ill discuss th is fie ld and some of the l i t t l e known
markets available fo r w riting fo r children
Television w ill a lso receive a tten tio n th is year, Larom added Frank Brink,
who produces radio and TV fo r KTVA-TV and KENI-TV, Anchorage, Alaska, w ill show
how to develop programs for lo cal statio n s such as we now have in Montana These
