National Defense Education Act Fellowships have been awarded to nine students
to begin study toward the doctor’s degree at Montana State University this fall,
according to Dr Ellis Waldron, dean of the MSU Graduate School.
Congress in 1958 authorized the graduate fellowships in selected colleges and
universities throughout the United States, the dean said M S U ’s doctoral programs
in geology, microbiology, and zoology were among the 272 graduate programs
selected from 1,038 proposed by l68 institutions of higher learning, he added.
The national program, established to increase the number of college and univer
sity teachers, will cost $5,29^,000 the first year Participating institutions
will receive up to $2,500 a year for each graduate fellow, from funds appropriated
by Congress.
In addition, each graduate fellow will receive $2,000 in the first year of
study toward the doctorate, $2,200 in the second year, and $2,^00 in the third
year, plus an annual allowance of $^00 for each dependent.
Selection of the graduate fellows was based on recommendations to the U S
Commissioner of Education by the graduate schools whose proposals were approved,
Dean Waldron said.
A 1958 graduate of MSU, Philip R Edwards Jr., Westfield, N J., received a
fellowship for graduate work in microbiology.
Those awarded fellowships for graduate study in geology are Dwight T.
I Maxwell, Kansas City, Mo.; William C Hood, Columbia, Mo.; William D Miller,
Rochester, N Y., and Bruce D Velde, Lombard, 111.
Working toward the doctorate in zoology will be Orion Copeland, Tampa, Fla.;
Judith F Danielson, Cambridge, Mass.; J W Hand, Tulsa, Okla., and Donald L.
Pattie, Tacoma, Wash.
