University of the Sciences Chapter

Update

By Dr Grace Earl

The students at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences had several

events during the spring 2019 semester

Karminna Ezpeleta, PharmD 2021 and Monica Nguyen,PharmD 2020 are student leaders of the PCP

student group They organized a state organization advocacy event on campus along with the students

involved in other state organizations from Pennsylvania and Delaware Students were available in the Science and Technology Center atrium to answer questions about state organizations They also gave out pamphlets Plus, participants could create their own advocacy buttons

On Friday, April 5th, Elise Barry, Chief Executive Officer of the NJPhA came to campus to hold a Mock Legislative event The students learned more about opportunities for being an NJPhA member that included advocating for the profession, convention planning, and many opportunities for continuing education The

mock event was a fun and exciting event that prompted students to think on the spot and develop a rationale for supporting a legislative bill The PCP students greatly appreciated the visit from Ms Barry!

We thank Karminna Ezpeleta for serving as NJPhA student leader for 2018-2019 We welcome Beata Zawadzka, PharmD as our student leader for 2019-2020 Grace Earl, PharmD, Associate Professor will

continue in her role to serve as the organization advisor

Co-curricular event on training for Brown Bag events

ByRachel Quinn, PharmD, BACP

Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice & NJPhA member

A simulated brown bag event was held March 6, 2019 at Fairleigh Dickinson University This event included P1 through P3 pharmacy students educating simulated patients represented by current APPE students The goal

of the simulated event is to prepare student pharmacists APPE brown bag events while in a controlled and low-risk environment A brown bag event can be completed by any health care provider, including pharmacists,

and targets patients and/or caregivers to provide them with a better understanding of their medications This process often identifies medication errors such as therapeutic duplication, drug-drug interactions, incorrect dosing or frequency, and expired medications As a pharmacist, we are medication experts and brown bag

events help provide optimal patient care and prevent medication errors from happening
