One component of academic success
Trang 10GPA WEIGHTED VS UNWEIGHTED
• Letter grades in Honors, Advanced Placement (AP) and
International Baccalaureate (IB) classes are weighted
• Additional GPA points are awarded for grades of C or higher in these classes
• Colleges like to see students taking the most rigorous classes possible while earning grades of C or higher in them
• Colleges are NOT impressed with grades of D or E in
weighted courses

Trang 22ACADEMIC CHALLENGES
Courses in high school are often more demanding than in middle
school and students assume greater responsibility for learning
content and completing assignments on time.
Trang 23How students can best advocate for themselves…
1 Approach teachers before/after class or during lunch/after
school to ask about materials, assessments, or other concerns.
● Ask what they can do to improve
● Parent-teacher communication will be more productive if the teacher has heard from the student first
1 Ask a trusted adult to help you advocate for yourself,
(school counselor, ESOL counselor, teacher, staff, parent, etc.).
1 Ask to speak to department Resource Teacher.
1 Ask to speak to the appropriate Administrator and/or
Coordinator.
Trang 24How parents can best advocate…
1 Encourage students to self-advocate first
1 Contact teachers after the student has contacted the teacher if concerns persist
1 When necessary, contact the department Resource Teacher
1 When necessary, contact the appropriate
Coordinator and/or Administrator

Trang 27What happens IF students fail a class:
– Ways to fail a class: E and E3 (failure due to attendance)
– A semester grade of “E” is figured into your GPA and you will not receive the credit for the course
– Student will need to make up the lost credit
– Lost credits can keep student from moving to the next grade or graduating on time
Trang 28ATTENDANCE IMPACTS GRADES
● Students are at risk for losing
credit in a class if they have
more than 4 unexcused
absences
○ 3 unexcused tardies = 1 unexcused
absence
○ 5 unexcused absences or more = E3
(loss of credit due to attendance)
● Attendance Intervention Plan
