Trang 1Problem Identified
Founded in 1413, St Andrews was the first university in Scotland, and is
now a highly respected learning establishment with a tradition of academic
excellence With a population of around 9000 staff and students, the
University generates significant quantities of waste This needs to be
carefully managed to minimise environmental impacts
The University of St Andrews decided that the introduction of a recycling
initiative, for the collection of cans and plastic bottles, would help to reduce
levels of waste sent to landfill Internal recycling banks were required for use
in a variety of locations, including corridors, common rooms and communal
areas The recycling banks needed to be neat, eye-catching, colour-coded
and convenient for the cleaning staff to empty
Solution
The University of St Andrews requested a site visit by a
specially trained Glasdon Representative, to discuss and
demonstrate the various options and find a solution to fit
all the university's criteria The Nexus™ 50 was chosen
due to its suitability for use in all areas The colour coded
apertures and eye-catching graphics make Nexus 50 easily
identifiable for the collection of different types of litter for
recycling Nexus 50 is easy to clean and empty and is the
ideal unit for keeping surrounding areas neat and tidy
It can hold up to 50 litres of waste at one time; thereby
effectively coping with the large quantity of litter created
by the students and staff on a daily basis
Resulting Benefits
Since April 2004, when the bins were purchased, the
University of St Andrews has found Glasdon Nexus 50
recycling banks to be an effective addition to their recycling initiative
They have collected 1.8 tonnes of cans and 3.5 tonnes of plastic bottles
since the programme began, resulting in a significant financial saving on
waste collection
