That’s the business of a community foundation Our business takes shape through philanthropic consulting, community leadership, grantmaking, our website
and more In all we do, we strive to combine heart, intellect and funding to make King County a better place to live, learn, work and play through strategic support of Arts & Culture, Basic Needs, Economy, Education, Environment, Health & Wellness and
Neighborhoods & Communities.

m ore King County residents are in
a struggle against poverty than ever before, battling to meet their basic needs for food and shelter The Seattle Foundation continues to make Basic Needs
a high priority, addressing not only people’s emergency needs but also the goal of long- term economic stability
Our Basic Needs funding strategies center
on preventing homelessness, increasing affordable housing and increasing access to nutritious food In 2010 the Grantmaking Program made $685,000 in grants to support this work This includes a $200,000 grant
to the collaborative Building Resilience Initiative (BRI).
BRI is a three-year funders collaborative formed in late 2008 to address immediate and long-term community needs resulting from the economic recession Led by The Seattle Foundation and funded by a group of local
foundations, corporations and philanthropists, this effort centers on preventing people from falling into financial crisis and providing them with tools to remain financially stable BRI grants in 2010 supported programs for legal aid, financial literacy and employment counseling.
Our Basic Needs outreach work concentrated
on the drive to end hunger We continued our work with End Childhood Hunger Washington, a statewide program to extend the reach and effectiveness of food stamps, school breakfast, after-school and summer food programs We are also engaged with many community-based food banks as well
as Food Lifeline to improve the emergency food system These are examples of the types of activities the Foundation engages
in to inform our grantmaking and support fundholders with their charitable giving.
In a recent survey, support for Basic Needs came second after Education as the philanthropic priorities of our fundholders Through donor advised funds, we made grants totaling $4.5 million in this area in 2010 Fundholders have focused more giving in this area both here in King County and abroad, particularly to support relief and rebuilding efforts in Haiti, Japan and other disaster- stricken areas

O ver the past decade, the
achievement gap between
low-income and non-low-low-income
Washington students has widened Nearly
everyone agrees that remedying it must be
our community’s top priority Ensuring that
every child receives an excellent education
is the driving force behind The Seattle
Foundation’s investments in Education.
To provide every child with a great education,
The Seattle Foundation focuses its work in
three areas: increasing support for
high-quality public schools, involving families
and communities in student achievement,
and giving children the skills they need to
succeed in school and life
In 2010 our efforts in strengthening public
schools centered on strategies for building
a corps of strong teachers and school
leaders to work in low-income communities
We championed efforts to bring Teach
For America (TFA) to the Puget Sound
area TFA recruits and trains top college
graduates who commit to teach for two
years in urban schools
Together with the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, we launched the Community
Center for Education Results Citing
unacceptable achievement gaps for
low-income students and children of color, this nonprofit’s goal is to double the number of students in South King County and South Seattle who are on track to graduate from college or earn a career credential by 2020
Our school-based work concentrated on our Middle School Initiative, designed
to support at-risk youth with academic support and enrichment programs that will help them succeed in these critical school years We expanded this partnership and
it now includes the Renton, Highline and Northshore school districts
Education is one of The Seattle Foundation’s largest categories of giving Fundholders’
long-standing commitment to education and
the public’s demands for better schools and closing the achievement gap ensure that this area will continue to be a strong focus for The Seattle Foundation.

T he Puget Sound area is well known for its environmental ethos and appreciation for the
region’s beautiful water, mountains and forests Ensuring the sustainability of our natural environment ranks high amongst the philanthropic priorities of Seattle Foundation fundholders and this fuels our efforts to build our knowledge and engagement in this critical area This region is home to some of the country’s most innovative approaches to ecological
sustainability, including the Bullitt Foundation, The Russell Family Foundation, and Northwest Fund for the Environment Within this network of significant grantmakers and advocates for the environment, The Seattle Foundation is establishing our niche and ensuring our fundholders connect with the best resources and partners for the causes they care about
Our current priorities are broad strategies centered on improving the health of Puget Sound, engaging everyone in environmental issues, and promoting sustainable growth As we strive to increase our impact, we will explore refining our funding strategies and seek more collaborative efforts amongst our fundholders, nonprofits and other foundations.
Our Grantmaking Program made $287,500 in grants for environmental causes in 2010, supporting the work of 24 organizations Our largest grants of $25,000 each were awarded to EarthCorps, an AmeriCorps affiliate that provides one-year intensive programs for young adults to learn best practices in conservation techniques and develop leadership skills, and to Washington Trails Association, which focuses on wilderness trail preservation Our fundholders invested $5.4 million in environmental programs through their own grantmaking
As in every area of community need, we continue to see the volume of grant requests grow We’re fortunate that our fundholders’ interest in environmental issues is also increasing A high priority for us in 2011 is to expand our partnering program so that fundholders have more opportunities to consider requests made within their areas of interest

N ationally, arts and culture organizations saw an increase in donations
of just over 4 percent in 2010, according to the annual “Giving
USA” study But areas hit hardest by the recession, like King County,
and especially groups heavily dependent on corporate support, still face an
uphill battle to raise support.
Public and private funding for the arts suffered in recent years as government
and philanthropic support declined or was redirected to basic human services
This was clearly evident in the areas where The Seattle Foundation focuses its
Arts & Culture work: supporting a continuum of arts education for students,
preserving and utilizing arts space, and broadening community participation
and engagement in the arts
Our work in 2010 centered on helping arts groups identify strategies to become
more resilient in the face of these challenges In partnership with other local arts
funders, The Seattle Foundation supported the 18-month technical assistance
initiative “Dynamic Adaptability.” It was aimed at helping local arts leaders learn
about how others are handling the economic crisis, develop strategies for adapting
to new economic times, and obtain guidance in managing change This research aided fundholders
as well, advising them of effective strategies to look for when evaluating grant requests.
In 2010 the Grantmaking Program awarded
$327,000 in discretionary grants to a wide range of arts and culture organizations From the marquee names such as Seattle Symphony Orchestra to the grassroots Maple Valley Creative Arts Council, The Seattle
Foundation continues to provide the critical general operating support these
organizations need Additionally, our fundholders contributed $5.4 million to
arts and culture groups here and around the country.
The Arts & Culture Element Committee, formed in 2011, is evaluating our
current strategies to ensure our grants have the greatest possible impact This
dynamic group of arts leaders and fundholders is providing thoughtful counsel
to guide our grantmaking in these new economic times.

H ealthcare is a personal choice yet
our communities have a powerful role in influencing the choices individuals have to support their physical and mental well-being The task of increasing healthcare options and promoting healthy lifestyles, particularly for vulnerable, low- income residents, is the goal of The Seattle Foundation’s Health & Wellness work.
Increasing access to healthcare services is critical We’ve invested in programs that help immigrants, children, the homeless and others gain equitable access to care
For example, The Seattle Foundation has long invested in the sustainability of the community health clinic network that can serve people where they work and live
For example, one of our largest Health
& Wellness grants last year went to Neighborcare Health, a provider of primary medical and dental care to low-income and
uninsured patients Staff provides services to patients speaking more than 100 languages, delivering care in shelters, transitional spaces, schools and homes
The decline in public funds is creating a challenge for organizations to meet the needs of the growing number of people seeking health care services We know our funding will not completely fill this gap but hope that we can help these nonprofits find new approaches to meet the needs of the developmentally disabled and mentally ill, people struggling with chemical dependency, women and children fleeing domestic violence, and other King County residents
Our fundholders place high importance
on serving the vulnerable residents of our communities In 2010 $14 million or
27 percent of The Seattle Foundation’s grants (including our own grants and those recommended by fundholders) supported this area In 2011, we’ll continue our strategies and study the impacts from healthcare reform legislation

T he Seattle Foundation reaches beyond the borders of King County in our efforts
to help our fundholders build a Healthy Community around the world In fact, we are the only community foundation in the nation with an affiliated foundation committed to supporting groups from our city that work internationally
Our mission in international philanthropy is to provide advice and share information so that fundholders can identify and support effective organizations
A critical partner for us is the Seattle International Foundation (SIF), an affiliate organization founded by Bill and Paula Clapp in 2005 SIF has strong expertise not only in Central America, but also in identifying effective, locally based organizations working around the globe Our fundholders have access to SIF’s knowledge and resources, as well as a broader network of partners we have developed to help guide global giving
Donor education is a key component of our international work In 2010 we hosted several events such as “Mobile Technology in the Developing World: Emerging Strategies for Addressing Health and Economic Disparities” and “Reflections
on Haiti and What’s Next.”
With the launch of The Seattle Foundation’s new website, we introduced a new Global Giving section featuring information on global philanthropy, including local capacity building in developing countries and international disaster relief Finally, we were a founding partner of the Pacific Northwest Global Donors Conference held in Seattle Many donors attended this event, which provided education on today’s most significant global issues, including agriculture, climate justice, human rights and technology
Support for Global Giving goes hand-in-hand with our Healthy Community agenda Our residents and economy are intertwined with the well-being of the international community The Seattle Foundation is committed to ensuring that international charitable giving is as fulfilling and effective as philanthropy here at home

T here is no singular King County We are a region made of a remarkable array of
neighborhoods and communities The Seattle Foundation fosters these connections
by investing in programs, spaces and media that bring people together and strengthen our shared sense of belonging.
Our Neighborhoods & Communities grantmaking focuses on increasing the vitality of neighborhoods, using physical spaces to build community, and fostering connections among non-geographic communities One key effort is the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Fund (N2N), which makes technical assistance and small grants of up to $5,000 available to organizations located
in the Kent, South Seattle and White Center neighborhoods to support grassroots projects
We believe it is equally critical to support non-geographic communities Based on interests, culture and other factors, these bonds help people feel connected and valued, especially in difficult times For example, a grant to Casa Latina supported the development of a new database to help match day workers with jobs and utilize social networking to generate new job opportunities
In 2010 The Seattle Foundation established a partnership with Crosscut Public Media, an online media site dedicated to journalism that encourages communities to find creative and sustainable solutions to major issues Launched with a $185,000 grant from Knight Foundation and a matching grant from The Seattle Foundation, this effort enabled Crosscut to hire a community editor charged with gathering the views of young people, members of ethnic communities, and other often unheard voices
Together with our fundholders, The Seattle Foundation will continue to invest in efforts that unite people and create community in ways that improve the quality of life throughout King County and make this area such a desirable place to live.

areas where we can make direct impact
on individual lives Our key strategies,
supported by $682,000 in grants in 2010,
are increasing access to resources for
underserved businesses, promoting education
and training for low-skilled adults, and
improving people’s financial stability.
Increasing resources in small businesses goes
hand-in-hand with the Foundation’s mission
investing program, first started in 2009 We
now have $2 million backing small business

objectives of furthering programmatic goals
and earning financial returns
Job training remains the key component
of our work We continue to incubate

Working Adults in partnership with six local
community colleges By the end of 2010, the
College for Working Adults had supported
more than 250 students toward their goal of
obtaining a one-year college credential in programs such as CNC machining, computer operating system support, medical assisting, early childhood education, and human services/chemical dependency.
In 2010 we also became a key partner in bringing the Emerald Cities Collaborative
to Seattle The goal of this national initiative is to make our commercial buildings more energy efficient and create career opportunities for low-income, low- skilled workers
Finally, Year Up opened its Puget Sound office in 2011 after more than three years
of advocacy and support from The Seattle Foundation It offers an intensive one-year training and education program that prepares low-income youth for careers and college.
The Seattle Foundation’s investments to grow the economy are linked to our work supporting a stronger cradle-to-career education continuum When the Foundation and our fundholders invest in both the economy and education, we fuel all other elements of a Healthy Community

the seattle foundation supports people with their philanthropy, helping them invest strategically in causes they care about and in ways that build a healthy Community
Creating a better community by partnering with fundholders to increase the effectiveness of philanthropy is our most important work It’s how well we serve our fundholders day in and day out — and the effectiveness with which we carry out our fiduciary responsibility —that results in more than
$50 million a year to worthy causes here at home and abroad
In 2010 we conducted a comprehensive survey to gather fundholder opinions and perceptions about their partnership with us Amongst the key findings were:
§ On a scale of 1 to 7, donors rated The Seattle Foundation’s integrity and trustworthiness a very high 6.5 Honesty, reliability and fiscal responsibility are fundamental to us as a community foundation and these values will always guide our actions
§ The Seattle Foundation’s website is highly valued by our fundholders At nearly 60 percent, our web usage is twice as high as that at the median community foundation
§ While fundholders universally appreciate the convenience of our website, there are many who continue to value the personal, one-on-one consulting that is our hallmark
Central to our mission is the effective stewardship and investment of our donors’ funds In 2010 our investment portfolio earned an average annualized return of 12.2 percent This compares very favorably
to our benchmarks of the Morningstar Moderate Allocation Index at 11.7 percent and the standard
60 percent stocks/40 percent bonds allocation that also yielded 11.7 percent These results of 2010, following the exceptional return of 20.1 percent of 2009, have raised our total assets to pre-recession levels
we provide extensive knowledge and research, a rich and deep community network, and excellent online services, as well as the opportunity to partner and connect with like-minded donors
A major milestone for the year was the launch of our reimagined website in September The new www.seattlefoundation.org, plus our social media presence, opens the doors to the public on years of Foundation research The site’s robust search tool allows visitors to conduct detailed searches among hundreds
of nonprofits and to make donations directly to them We’ve seen our web traffic triple since the launch

At The Seattle Foundation, we say we’re in the business of building a Healthy Community It’s the philanthropic partnership with our generous fundholders and effective nonprofit partners that enables us to do this work And, it’s through this partnership of commitment and action that we see the strength and value of the community foundation so powerfully emerge In each and every area of our business, The Seattle Foundation had a highly productive year in 2010.
Trang 17For fundholders, the site offers enhanced online
services and reporting to support your personal
philanthropy We recognize the value funders place
on the ease and convenience of managing charitable
giving online, from requesting grants to tracking gifts
and recordkeeping In 2011 our focus is on ways we
can use the site to share grant opportunities tailored
to fundholders’ specific areas of interest
we make grants to nonprofit organizations
and help others make effective grants based
on a county-wide philanthropic agenda, called
“a healthy Community.”
During the year, we also developed new strategies
to bring the Healthy Community agenda to life
As the underpinning of our grantmaking and
community work, this framework was developed to
express the seven essential elements of a thriving
community and the areas where philanthropy can
have the biggest impact
In 2010 we restructured our grantmaking and now
review applications by element area This allows
us to review all related grant requests at the same
time and better evaluate how well they support our
Healthy Community strategies Through newly formed
Element Committees, we are gathering experts within
each area to assist us in evaluating applications and
recommending strategies for Foundation engagement
We awarded close to $5 million in grants through
The Seattle Foundation’s Grantmaking Program
and supported our donors in making $44.9 million
in grants from their charitable giving funds Our
donors’ generosity continues to amaze us all,
particularly as we see their continuing investments
in education and their compassionate response to aid
those affected by natural disasters here and abroad
We continue to focus intently on the areas of education and economic opportunity in our grantmaking and community leadership work
Undoubtedly, the highlight of 2010 was the Healthy Community Luncheon featuring Geoffrey Canada, president and chief executive officer of Harlem Children’s Zone in New York City, which attracted more than 1,200 people.
the seattle foundation
Our goal is to make The Seattle Foundation a place where people who care about building a Healthy Community and where all contributions—ideas, opinions, efforts and funding—come together to make King County a better place for today and tomorrow
The advances we made in 2010 to strengthen the philanthropic partnership with our generous fundholders, nonprofit partners, and the broader community are truly creating a stronger, more resilient community for all who call this home
Thank you for your action and commitment to the business of creating a Healthy Community for all.
