Dr Rogers began his distinguished career in library administration as an assistant in the New York Public Library He then joined the staff of the Columbia College Library, Columbia University, rising to acting librarian and then librarian (1942-1946) Dr Rogers served in the United States Air Force He enlisted as a private and was later promoted to captain and chief of the Special Projects Section, Office of the Chief of Staff, Plans, Air Transport Command

After a few years as research analyst with Smith, Barney and Company of New York City, he returned to the library field as Director of the Grosvenor Library, Buffalo, New York, which was followed by several years as Director of the Rochester Public Library From 1954 to 1957, he served as chief of the personnel office, then as chief of the reference department in the New York Public Library

He then became chief Assistant Librarian of Congress and later Deputy Librarian of Congress, before being appointed Director of University Libraries at Stanford University in

1964 Since 1969, he has been University Librarian at Yale University

In addition to this distinguished record of service, Dr Rogers is the author of numerous articles and has served as an officer in many of the learned societies and professional organizations to which he belongs He has been President of the Association

of Research Libraries and Second Vice President of the American Library Association, and has served as a consultant to UNESCO as well as countless government agencies and

universities He is the co-author of the book, University Library Administration, the

definitive work on this subject

Among his many honors, Dr Rogers was awarded the Alumni Achievement Award by the University of Northern Iowa in 1958
