American Heart Month

February is dedicated to raising awareness

about heart disease and increasing knowledge

about prevention Heart disease is the leading cause of

death in the United States

So how do you lower your risk of heart disease? Getting

up and getting active is one of the best things you can

do Shoot for 30 minutes most days of the week! And

the Taylor Community Winter Olympics is a great way to

get started A 15-day walking and social challenge, it’s

good for your heart in more ways than one One recent

study showed that a big factor in living to the age of 100

was close social connections… let’s make some! Read

Page 4 for a run-down of fun events and please do make

a point of connecting with your neighbors

You’ll also want to find out if you have high blood

pres-sure or cholesterol, and if you do, get treatment If you

smoke, get help to quit And eat a healthy diet with lots

of fresh fruit and vegetables, one that is low in sodium

and trans fat

And remember, you don’t have to do everything at once

Small changes can turn into healthy habits!

Winnie Davis Trains for Supervisory Position

Eliot Davis’ young pup Winnie watches the guys closely as they work in the ceiling of the Business Office, fixing the hot water line to Salon 435

Eliot seemed pretty sure when he sent this photo that she’s a shoe-in for the position

of Kirk Beswick’s new Supervisory Assistant

Kirk may still possibly have input, however

Ready? Ready!

As part of Taylor’s ongoing emergency and disaster planning preparedness, we’ve recently purchased evacuation stair chairs to

be used in an emergency evacuation situation Eliot Davis, HR Director, was a brave, willing and helpful volunteer as we learned how to use this equipment

Note from the business office:

2017 Tax Preparation

A letter from Taylor’s VP-Finance, Ed Soucy, went out

January 20 regarding possible medical deductions for

residents’ 2017 Income Tax returns

In summary, residents who purchased Continuing Care

contracts in 2017 may be able to deduct a certain and

substantial portion of the entrance fee and monthly

fees paid as a medical deduction Residents with new

Taylor Connection at Home contracts in 2017 may also

be able to deduct a portion of the entrance fee paid

Residents who’ve purchased Lifestyle contracts are

advised to discuss deductions with their tax advisors

Assisted living, memory care and nursing residents are

subject to different tax rules

and the deductibility of your

monthly fees should be

dis-cussed with your tax preparer

But if you moved here in 2017

and purchased a Continuing

Care contract, you may be

able to deduct a portion of

your entrance fee

Mr Soucy’s letter is not

in-tended as tax advice and he

recommends you discuss

these matters with your tax

advisor or preparer

Provider tax payments for

2017, also mailed with Ed’s

letter to residents, are shown

Taylor Day of Caring

2017

Annually, Taylor Community participates in a

communi-ty outreach aimed towards helping a neighbor needing

assistance This time, Taylor Community took care of

one of their own

When Taylor requested employees needing some help

at home, Dionne Gordon, who works at Ledgeview on

the nursing floor, jumped at the chance Needing some

help with a missing front porch, Dionne asked Taylor if

they would contribute towards getting the porch

re-placed

The Taylor Facilities crew led by Ken Lorden met with

Dionne to review the situation and came up with a

construction plan and a materials list President/CEO

Michael Flaherty whole-heartedly agreed to cover the

cost of materials and labor to get the job done

Late in the fall Ken, along with Jamie Mercier and Tony

Lessieur, took a day to pre-build the porch, install

sonnet tubes and install the porch The end result was

a beautiful and well-built porch that will bless Dionne

and her family for years to come

Well done Taylor Community and the Facilities team!

Welcome to Taylor Community!

Qualities of an Excellent Audience

When you go to a lecture or musical event, you want the presenter to give a good performance, right?

It’s not difficult to find articles detailing the characteristics

of an excellent presenter, but those defining the qualities

of an excellent audience are harder to find The im-portance of being a good audience member was recently brought to my attention by a resident who’d witnessed some less-than-ideal behavior and was wondering what

we might do or say to help keep this from happening

It’s important to say that the lion’s share of events I’ve attended here at Taylor have had exceptionally respectful and engaged audiences Here, however, is a quick primer, just as food for thought!

1 Arrive on time for the performance and ready to listen

If you’re late, you’re unconsciously telling others that your time is more valuable than theirs

2 Pay attention And let the speaker know you are paying attention Use non-verbal cues to show the speaker this: make eye contact, nod, smile Check your body language to be sure you are not sending the wrong non-verbal cues; sitting with closed arms and/or leaning backward can be seen as a sign of being disinterested And this seems ultra-obvious, but don’t look at your watch, talk or text during the presen-tation Turn your electronic devices off

3 If the presenter asks a question or does something which calls for a response, respond with enthusiasm Let them know you’re interested!

4 Don’t interrupt the presentation Your questions and comments should be saved for the appropriate time Unless the presenter indicates you may ask questions

at any time, save them for the end

5 Make a connection! Chances are the presenter is someone you’d like to know? If you’ve followed the previous advice, you’ve already made a positive impression Now’s your opportunity to introduce your-self!

Not only does an involved and responsive audience create a positive experience for the speaker, it also creates positive energy for everyone Win – win!

But wait, what if you think the performance is a dud? Even if you do, give others a chance to listen Make the most of the situation, and give the presenter a chance You’ll both benefit!

Right now it looks like this in New Hampshire This photo was taken recently on Frisky Hill in Gilmanton

Beautiful, right? And great if you like winter sports It’s especially nice if you live at Taylor; you can look at it, but not scrape or shovel it, and only play in it if you want to Winter has been dishing it out pretty good, but it won’t be long before the weather changes!

Make Happiness a Daily Habit!

This recipe for a Happy Home was first submitted

by Mrs Claude McFarlane of Lamont, Iowa, to The

Telegraph Herald in Dubuque, in the newspaper’s

annual homemaker’s favorite recipe roundup:

I'm happiest when I'm in the present I notice

that when I'm worrying or anxious it's usually

because I'm thinking of things that haven't

happened yet — I'm just worried they might

happen And the only time that I can actually

do something differently is right now

~Jewel
