Letter to Chapter Membership
Dear Members of Oklahoma Panhandle State University Chapter:
I am honored to have served as your local chapter president for the
2017-2018 school year Leading our chapter to growth has been incredibly empowering I have especially enjoyed seeing our incoming members grow as leaders
During this past school year, we have been successful in a variety of events for our chapter, our community, or our charity There is no doubt that our members have continued to represent our chapter well on the campus, local, and state levels With your help this year, we completed several successful fundraisers including raising almost $700 for the March of Dimes Your creativity with that event this year allowed us to more than double our previous monies raised Your efforts won campus awards at events such as the annual Chili Cook Off (Best Presentation) and Homecoming (Second Place Door and Second Place Float)
Additionally, you worked hard to increase our membership by 17 members, which allowed us to reach our highest membership numbers since we rechartered in 2009! By working to expand the chapter’s visibility, you were able to provide Panhandle State students with the opportunities that Phi Beta Lambda offers For instance, our “Lunch & Learns,” which were open to the entire OPSU campus, and the Rotary Partner program, which was open to our members, gave students the
opportunity to network with leaders in our community, in addition to providing our members with the possibilities to increase their leadership skills and allow them to lead various committees
For me personally, working with the executive council and advisers has been such a rewarding part
of this leadership experience It has been astonishing to see how Phi Beta Lambda has guided our members to unanticipated accomplishments These experiences were made possible by your
contributions and leadership, which have made our chapter one of the leading and most well-known organizations on campus I am grateful to have had this amazing opportunity, and I am excited to see what the next leadership team will accomplish next year!
Best wishes,
Jocelynn Avalos

The Gamma Mu Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda on the Oklahoma Panhandle State University
campus was chartered on October 25, 1960 It is believed that the organization went inactive during the
mid to late 1980s, but was reactivated in 2009 by advisers Sara Hitch and Davin Winger Dr Hitch and
Mr Winger remain as advisers today and have been joined by Mrs Robyn Harris
In March 2012, seven members agreed to attend the State Leadership Conference in Tulsa, OK
All students qualified for the National Leadership Conference, and one student earned Top 10
recognition at the first NLC attended by OPSU PBL
Since 2012, OPSU PBL members have earned 111 state placements: 55 state championships, 35
second place finishes, and 21 third place finishes Additionally, members have earned 30 Top 10 national
finishes, including one national championship and two open event championships
Since that first NLC almost six years ago, the Gamma Mu Chapter of PBL has continued to
grow and progress OPSU PBL looks to continue ELEVATING THEIR FUTURE at the local, state,
and national levels in 2018 and beyond
Number of Members
The Gamma Mu Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda has seen highs and lows in terms of membership,
but while the past three years were fairly consistent, membership exploded this year resulting in the
highest membership numbers recorded since the chapter was reactivated in 2009 The chart below shows
the membership trends over the past eight years
Size of Community and School

Recruitment Activities
OPSU PBL members are some of the friendliest students on campus, which definitely helps with recruitment Following are some of the ways members worked to recruit new members this year:
• Fall Club Fair – Oklahoma Panhandle State University’s Student Senate again organized a club fair for all OPSU campus organizations, and PBL was glad to have the opportunity to share with others about the benefits of being in PBL, and offered muffins to interested students because
“There’s ‘muffin’ like joining a great club!”
• Chapter Meetings – All chapter meetings are held on the last Monday of the month Lunch is always provided Chapter meetings begin with an ice breaker and an officer speaking on one of the member-identified benefits of being in PBL
Leadership Development
Leadership development opportunities abound at local, state, and national levels of the PBL Organization Following are the specific ways that OPSU PBL worked to help its members develop their leadership skills over the past year This year, break-out workshops at NLC in Anaheim, California, and sessions for officers or members who want to be officers at SFLC in Tulsa, Oklahoma, provided the main tools for leadership development for OPSU PBL
Other ways that members developed leadership skills included serving on various committees, such as the Fundraising Committee, the Door Decorating Committee and/or the Float Committee for Homecoming or helping plan the March of Dimes fundraiser, Purp Out with MoD
Career Exploration and Preparation
One of the key goals of Phi Beta Lambda is to assist students in the establishment of
occupational goals OPSU PBL takes this goal very seriously and as such, provided the following a Lunch and Learn opportunity for members and all of the OPSU campus to explore career options and network
This was the second year that OPSU PBL has successfully offered Lunch and Learn The whole student body of OPSU is invited as well as the PBL members This year the students had an opportunity
to meet Katherine Martin an OPSU Alumni and employee of Bank of the Panhandle Students learned about what careers not only Bank of the Panhandle, but banking in general has to offer They also learned about how financials work Over 25 students and PBL members attended and were very pleased with the information provided
Trang 8Business Partnerships
OPSU PBL enjoyed multiple partnerships this year with various community organizations including Main Street Guymon, Guymon Rotary, and the Guymon Fire Department organization in the neighboring town of Guymon, Oklahoma These partnerships have created both fundraising and
community service opportunities for PBL members
Since rechartering in 2009, OPSU PBL has worked with the Main Street Guymon organization
in a variety of ways From co-sponsoring fundraisers to assisting in community clean-up efforts This year, OPSU PBL was asked to help clean up the Guymon Community Theater before their most recent show Members met on February 8, 2018 to help
Guymon Rotary has also been a strong partner for OPSU PBL since their first SLC and NLC in
2012 Beginning in 2014, OPSU PBL was asked to help this partner with their major fundraiser—the Pioneer Days Rotary Barbeque On May 5, 2017, 12 members and advisers helped serve almost 800 community members barbeque with all of the fixings Members agree that this is one of their most enjoyable events of the year Additionally, members who attended the previous year’s NLC are always asked to attend one of Rotary’s first meetings in August or September to share their experiences at that event Members are fed and are always warmly received This year, members attended the September 22,
2017 Guymon Rotary meeting
This year saw the start of a new partnership with the Guymon Fire Department OPSU PBL was approached in the Spring of 2017 about helping with their major fundraiser—the Fireman’s Ball On September 19, 2017, five members and two advisers helped coordinate the silent auction for the event Due to their professionalism and enthusiasm, OPSU PBL has already been invited back to help with the
2018 Ball
Chapter Fundraising
Like many other schools, OPSU’s PBL chapter relies on fundraising in order to attend
competitions and events This task is only made tougher being in the state of Oklahoma with ever increasing restrictions and limitations of funds for higher education Regardless of the challenges,
members often step above and beyond and readily give graciously of their time and energy in order to generate funds for the organization This past year, OPSU PBL coordinated two fundraisers: 1) a chance
to win two box seat tickets for an OKC Thunder vs Spurs game and an iPad Mini, and 2) the second annual Perfect Pairings event
The drawing for Thunder tickets is an annual tradition for PBL members Members are asked to sell as many tickets as possible with the proceeds funding their State Leadership Conference travel, hotel, and admission expenses Each member who wants to travel to SLC is required to generate at least $200
in order to participate and go As a chapter, members were able to raise $2,275
Secondly, PBL hosts a wine, cheese, and dessert sampling event for the Oklahoma Panhandle community This event, known as Perfect Pairings, is a joint venture between PBL and the OPSU computer/ IT club AITP The event this year was a huge success with gross profits exceeding $11,500

Trang 9Public Relations Activities and Chapter Publicity
OPSU PBL continues to maintain a very strong and profitable relationship with OPSU Campus
Communications With their help, OPSU PBL has articles published about them throughout the past
year in the campus newspaper and university magazine as well as on the campus website Articles can
also be found in other local newspapers, such as the Guymon Daily Herald and the High Plains Observer
Another way that OPSU PBL utilizes publicity is through Facebook The PBL at Panhandle
State group boasts 173 members, an increase of 37 members, from 136 total members this time last year
Members of the group include local business leaders, community members, family members, OPSU
administrators, current PBL members, and alumni OPSU PBL members or advisers post an average of
three times per month, during all 12 months of the year, with posts ranging from volunteer opportunities
and meeting announcements to photos of PBL events and activities
All in all, OPSU PBL has conducted themselves very well in terms of public relations activities and
chapter publicity Our members are involved in countless activities which have been featured in a variety
of media outlets:
• Articles featuring current students who are PBL members in the university magazine;
• Stories about members who are working for local businesses;
A feature on our current Chapter Vice President who won the National Hispanic
• College Quiz this year;
• Members serving as representatives in the Oklahoma Student Government Association;
• Members participating in, hosting, and sponsoring numerous OPSU campus activities;
• Members aiding the local Rotary Club in meetings and fundraisers;
• The chapter hosting guests from local businesses for networking opportunities;
• Members participating in numerous NCAA Div II and NAIA collegiate sports such as:
o Baseball, Football, and Men’s Basketball
o Women’s Basketball, Softball, and Volleyball; and
• PBL committees coordinating events for and volunteering for local and national charities
All of these activities help promote OPSU PBL as multiple members are involved in these various
activities and help spread the positive message that PBL embraces Through this extensive list of
activities, members publicize OPSU PBL and encourage businesses, students, and various community
members to get involved
