The DaVinci Institute is a historic educational partnership whose goal is to impact the Arts and Education in Oklahoma through increased partnerships, programming and public awareness It is the vision o f the DaVinci Institute to provide programs that encourage critical thinking and creativity and promote partnerships and collaborations with other organizations that will further these programs in Oklahoma

In 1998, the Kirkpatrick Foundation invited Oklahoma educators to begin discussing the

opportunities and resources available for improving arts and arts education in Oklahoma Artists, private and public agencies and philanthropic groups including the Oklahoma Educational

Television Authority (OETA), the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, the Oklahoma State Department of Education, and the Kirkpatrick Foundation joined with these educators to form a brain trust Pooling their resources and talents the consortium identified the most critical needs in Oklahoma education: 1) improving K-12 education, 2) sharing arts resources, and 3) raising arts awareness In November o f 2001 the 501c (3) organization, the DaVinci Institute was formed

Three committees were formed to assist with the goals o f the organization The arts education, programming and public awareness committees work in a collaborative environment o f public and private college and university faculty, public and private community organizations and other sectors o f society to enhance and promote arts, education and creativity in Oklahoma

In the five years since its inception, the DaVinci Institute has developed and implemented

numerous programs

1 Oklahoma A+ Schools: A whole school education reform programs featuring the

important role of arts in K-8 education combining interdisciplinary teaching and daily arts instruction

2 Tri-State A+ Network: Oklahoma, Arkansas and North Carolina (the originator o f the A+ schools theory) have developed a collaborative tri-state network to further enhance the programs

3. DaVinci Institute Lecture Series: Features nationally and internationally recognized educational speakers who share the most current thinking on relevant arts and education topics

4 DaVinci Creative Competitions: This program awards students for their creativity while providing an opportunity to showcase their talent

5 DaVinci Scholars Award: Launched in 2002, this program is designed to help retain Oklahoma trained arts educators by offering exceptional graduating arts educators

professional and financial incentives to build their careers in Oklahoma

6 Arts Awareness: The DaVinci Institute provides member colleges with a website

(www.davinciinstitute.net) calendars and listserve to provide a centralized location for planning, programming, collaborating and sharing o f ideas and resources to provide revitalization and growth on higher education campuses

Designing the Future:

A Plan to Strengthen the Arts and Arts Education in Oklahoma

A joint strategic plan o f the DaVinci Institute Planning sponsor: The Kirkpatrick

Foundation, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Goals Statement

The goal o f the jo in t strategic plan o f the DaVinci Institute is to

H elp create and p rovide a vibrant arts enviro n m en t fo r all O klahom ans by

(1) Partnering w ith others to ensure th a t all O k lah o m a students participate in arts education program s th at are on-going, sequential an d com prehensive and that advanced students continue to h ave access to q u ality program s

(2) Strengthening arts education program s and arts offerings on O klahom a cam puses (3) Increasing public aw areness o f collegiate arts p ro g ram s and th e arts in general

Plan Overview:

The p lan consists o f three objectives, each supported by strategies to accom plish the objective C om m unication, cooperation and co llab o ratio n am ong O klahom a m em ber colleges and universities as w ell as w ith groups and agencies th at im pact the arts and arts education in O klahom a are key to the successful im plem entation o f the plan

The p lan is intended to serve as a m ulti-year guide to d irect and support th e w ork o f the

jo in t com m ittees, and com m ittee m em bers reserve th e rig h t to m odify th e p lan over tim e

in order to m ain tain an effective and efficient planning tool It is anticipated th at sub­ com m ittees w ill im plem ent strategies and w ill report th eir progress during the m onthly

m eetings o f th e com m ittees and th at the p lan w ill be fo rm ally review ed annually

Objectives and Strategies

Objective One: Parallel to the continued support o f existing programs for advanced students in the arts, support the development and implementation of ongoing,

sequential, comprehensive programs of study that include all students, enabling them to meet basic arts proficiencies.

Strategy 1-1: C reate p artnerships w ith organizations th a t w o rk w ith th e policy-m aking and regulatory bodies th at influence K -12 standards, support th e efforts o f those

organizations and provide input

*Partners may include the Business Circle fo r Arts Education in Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Arts Council, Oklahoma State Department o f Education, public and private schools, home school associations, the State Chamber, legislators, professional arts organizations and others Linkages may be created by inviting partners to meet with the Resource Committee during the committee’s monthly meetings.

Strategy 1-2: U sin g state-m an d ated academ ic req u irem en ts as a base and national

standards as a guide, d efin e o ngoing, sequential and com prehensive arts education for grades K -12 and share defin itio n s w ith partners

Strategy 1-3: S h are th e fin d in g s o f relev an t studies reflectin g the advantages o f arts

ed u catio n w ith p artn ers so th at th ey m ig h t u tilize the inform ation w hen m eeting w ith policy-m aking a n d reg u lato ry bodies

Strategy 1-4: Created the pilot arts education reform model utilizing the North Carolina A+ Schools Program as a guide A select group o f 14 Oklahoma teachers and principals will train with North Carolina faculty over the next twelve months with implementation scheduled for fall of 2002 Twenty schools will participate in the initial pilot.

as a m ean s o f stren g th en in g p ro g ram s and enhancing offerings

Strategy 2-1:

a. M ain tain a n d p ro m o te a list serve fo r ex ch an g in g inform ation (via d iscussion)

b. In addition, co n tin u e to encourage th e exchange o f inform ation at th e m onthly

m eetings o f th e D aV in ci Institute

Strategy 2-2Maintain a d irecto ry and/or an on-line database and list serve o f college and

un iv ersity arts faculty, facu lty expertise, and interests

Strategy 2-3: S h are fees an d reso u rces fo r guest artists an d traveling exhibits

Strategy 2-4: Establish on-going entity comprised o f higher education

representatives to advance arts and cultural education.

Strategy 2-5: E x p a n d D aV in ci m em bership to in stitu tio n s statew ide

Objective Three: Increase the general public’s awareness o f college and university arts programs as a means o f strengthening interest in and support of those

programs, as w ell as the arts in general.

Strategy 3-2: D ev elo p an aw aren ess cam paign th a t u ses w id ely reco g n ized ro le m odels and b u sin ess lead ers to p u b licize th e im portance o f th e arts an d arts education

*Utilize Oklahoma college and university alumni as spokespersons, as well as spokespersons fro m areas customarily (but in some cases mistakenly) seen as being adversarial to or in competition with the arts, such as scientists and athletes.

Background

O k lah o m a co lleg es an d u n iv ersities jo in e d to g eth er to w rite a strategic p lan to strengthen arts ed u catio n an d cu ltu ral d ev elo p m en t in central O klahom a T h eir u nprecedented jo in t initiativ e w as su p p o rted b y th e K irk p atrick F oun d atio n o f O k lah o m a City

P rio r to th e p lan n in g p ro cess, faculty and deans fro m m any o f the institutions had

b een m eetin g fo r ap p ro x im ately 1 1/4A years as m em bers o f tw o separate com m ittees, both also u n d er th e sp o n so rsh ip o f th e K irk p atrick F oundation The first com m ittee, the

C en tral O k lah o m a C o lleg e an d U n iv ersity A rts R esource C o m m ittee, ahs b e en focusing

p rim arily o n issu es relatin g to strengthening collegiate-level program s and enhancing

p u b lic aw areness o f th e arts an d arts education T he com m ittee h ad successfully applied

fo r a m atch in g g ran t fro m th e K irk p atrick F o u n d atio n and w as developing a m u tu al w eb site fo r th e p o stin g o f in stitu tio n s’ arts offerings and events

T h e seco n d com m ittee, th e C entral O klahom a C ollege and U n iv ersity A rts and

E d u catio n R esearch C om m ittee, w as com posed o f deans and researchers from collegiate arts, arts ed u catio n and te ac h e r e d u catio n program s, as w ell as representatives from the

O k lah o m a State D ep artm en t o f E d u catio n an d th e O k lah o m a A rts C ouncil W ith arts edu catio n as its fo cal p o in t, th e com m ittee ahs und ertak en an extensive national survey o f studies exam ining th e co rrelatio n o f arts education kin d erg arten th ro u g h 12th grade to stu d en t acad em ic achievem ent

co m m ittees’ co n cern s an d p ro p o sin g practical strategies to address th o se concerns

M em b ers o f b o th the A rts R esource com m ittee an d th e A rts and E d u catio n

R esearch co m m ittee w ere in v ited to participate in th e plan n in g process, as w ell as arts facu lty and deans fro m oth er central O klahom a colleges and universities Institutional

representatives w ere jo in e d by a council o f advisors from state agencies supporting education, th e arts, arts edu catio n and cultural developm ent

A ll in all, som e 26 individuals participated in the planning pro cess w hich was undertaken February-M ay 2000 A list o f participants and th eir institutions o r agencies is attached (A ddendum 1), as w ell as an outline o f th e planning pro cess (A ddendum 2)

The planning schedule consisted o f four m eetings: an initial four-hour session on February 25 follow ed by three sessions o f tw o hours each on m arch 29, A pril 18 and Ma;

Institutional representatives and K irkpatrick sta ff also shared the draft w ith college and university presidents, adm inistrators and faculty; th e K irk p atrick Foundation board ob d ir e c to r s ; various foundation directors; heads o f appropriate state agencies; and others as a m eans o f securing feedback and additional input

O n June 28, planning com m ittee m em bers m et w ith m em bers o f the original tw o com m ittees in order to rev iew the p lan and receive input M em bers o f the planning com m ittee also discussed the responses th at they h ad received fro m th e various

associations, faculty groups, adm inistrators, boards and others w ith w hom th ey had shared the plan A fter reaching consensus on suggested m odifications, th e planning

com m ittee rew orded the draft to reflect appropriate changes

C om m ittee m em bers also discussed form ing an on-going organization to carry ou the p lan and to address shared concerns and goals They also volunteered to serve on com m ittees th at w ill address the objectives outlined in th e plan Im plem entation is scheduled to being in th e sum m er o f 2000
