Trang 14West ern And Eastern Meet At
Homecoming Again
Homecoming with Eastern's Maroons as
the opponent on the gridiron-what memo
-ries such a combination revives! Shades of
1941 when the unbeaten Maroons came in
as overwhelming favorites and left Bowling
Green on the short end of a 27-20 score This
after leading 20-0 at halftime too
Then there is that great game of 1 48
when again Eastern came in for Homeco
m-ing as a definite favorite and left town wea
r-ing a 14-13 defeat
Homecoming - the 20 previous games
played on this day have been close and
thrill-packed frays Not a single game has
ever been dull
It would be hard to single out any one
game and point to it as the top Homecoming
tilt However, that 1941 scrap will rank alo g
with the best but not far behind will be the
1948 game
Any of the 5,500 persons who jammed the
Western Stadium on that sunny October 25th
afternoon back in 1941 will never forget
what a beaten team the Hilltoppers were
when they went to dressing room at
half-time Trailing 20-0, they had literally been
pushed out of the stadium The gloom was
deep among the Western supporters but the
visiting Maroon fans were joyous This joy
was not for long, though
In the short span of the third quarter the
Hilltoppers had tied the score and were
pushing the Maroons out of the stadium
now What a transformation! Gene Sparrow,
Johnny Mazola, Joe Cullen, Lou Cullen, Dick
Crouch and Bob Wilson simply refused to
acknowledge defeat Wilson added the final
touch in the fourth quarter when he inte
r-cepted a desperate Maroon pass and raced
65 yards through the entire Eastern eleven
for the winning marker
Eastern, boasting a powerhouse in 1948,
came back to Bowling Green to meet the
underdog Hilltoppers on their Homecoming
Day This time it was a cool but sunny
No-vember afternoon which saw the Western
Stadium jammed to capacity
The Hilltoppers didn't let the Maroons
get the jump on them this time Jim Pickens
got his slintshot right arm going and before
the Maroons could get settled down "Slim
Jim" had toosed two touchdown passes to Jewel Browning Tom Montelli had his toe
in tip top condition as he split the uprights
perfectly to give the Hilltoppers a 14-0 half-time lead
Eastern was not through, though The Maroons had a great team and they showed
it as they came storming back in similar fash-ion to the Hilltoppers of 1941 Twice they
pushed across touchdowns in the third period but one try for extra point was missed and
Western still held a slim one-point lead as the fourth quarter o ened
Here the Maroons opened up with a des
-perate passing attack which almost paid off Had Jim Pickens n t been the Western back-field picking Maroon aerials ou t of the air
every time the Eastern eleven threatened during that hectic fourth quarter, the story
might have ended differently But Pickens pulled down four potential Eastern touch-down tosses which broke the Maroons' spirit
The final blow came when Pickens took the
ball away from an Eastern end as both
fought for the pass on the Western goal
That interc ption put the game on ice for
Western and sent the Maroons back to
Rich-mond beaten again
So today in this 1950 Homecoming tilt
two ancient rivals meet again to renew a football rivalry begun back in 1914 Over the
years the Hilltoppers and the Maroons have
played each other 22 times Western has emerged victorious 17 times and Eastern five times The Hilltoppers piled up their victory
skein over the Maroons before World War II
In the 18 meetings prior to the
discontinu-ance of football at both schools because of
the war in 1942, Western had won 16 times
and Eastern twice
Since the war when football was revived
in 1946 at both schools Eastern has whipped
the Hilltoppers three out of four games To-day the Hilltoppers will be out to continue
the mastery over Eastern in Homecoming
tilts and get started again on a long string
of victories such as the mighty Western
teams of the twenties and thirties were able
to put together
This game will certainly produce plenty
of a tion and thrills, if it follows to any
degree at all, the pace set in past Eastern-Western Homecoming tilts
