Committee discussed a basic approach to assignment of TAs

All students funded by more than 50% from program sources are required to have a service assignment usually in the form of a Teaching Assistant position BMS students who are funded primarily from the KSU budget will be required to carry out their TA assignment at Kent State The service assignment should be approximately 20 hours/week throughout the academic year This commitment includes both

in class and preparation time

At the beginning of May of each year the graduate office send a list of students to KSU who should be assigned TA assignments on the Kent campus Also the graduate office will send out a form to each advisor asking for recommendations for TA assignments for their student(s) In addition each course director will be contacted regarding their needs for TA assignments and whether or not they have any preferences for specific students

The responses should be received by mid-May A plan for TA assignments will be discussed and

approved at the June meeting of the BMS committee This information will be communicated to the advisors, course directors, students, and Kent State University

Committee discussed a basic approach to the graduate student rotation process

During June of each year faculty on the NEOMED campus will be asked if they are interested

participating in student rotations for the upcoming year If so the faculty should submit a brief

description of their current research activities including: recent publications, active grants, recent grant submissions, and funding source to support dissertation research activities The BMS graduate

committee will then approve a list of laboratories for rotations After rotations and tentative match, the BMS committee will approve final placements

Committee continued with a discussion on possible cost-sharing of support for graduate students with faculty There was mixed interest by the faculty in contributing to a "pool" that would be used to support graduate students Faculty might be more interested if there were additional "matching" funds contributed by the university to support more students This possibility will be explored with the

university
