for the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health
Sciences The College was founded in 1940 by
the Congregation of Christian Brothers, a religious
order of educators Iona is a private Catholic college
located on a 45-acre campus in New Rochelle, only
20 miles north of Manhattan in suburban Westchester
County, New York
The Dean, who will report directly to the Provost,
will serve on the President’s Cabinet, and will work
closely with the President and leadership team This
key leadership position provides extraordinary vision,
strategic direction, and entrepreneurial management
The Dean will have the opportunity to help mold and
shape the future of this new School, which
NewYork-Presbyterian has supported with a gift of $20 million
Iona College anticipates commencing classes at the
Iona Bronxville campus in the fall of 2022 A link to the announcement of the partnership can be found here The Dean is expected to take office in February 2022

President Seamus Carey, Ph.D., a national leader
in higher education and a noted advocate of the
relevance and importance of a liberal arts education,
became Iona College’s ninth president on July 1, 2019
President Carey has a long and successful tenure in
higher education including president of Transylvania
University in Kentucky; dean of Arts and Sciences at
Sacred Heart University in Connecticut and chairman
of the philosophy department at Manhattan College
in New York Since coming to Iona, he has made
transformational changes which include the planned
purchase of the Concordia College Campus in
Bronxville, the partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian
to open a new School of Health Sciences, and
launching the Gaels Go Further mentoring program
connecting Iona Alumni and students
Darrell P Wheeler, Ph.D., MPH, ACSW, a nationally
recognized leader, educator, and scholar, has served
as Iona College’s provost and senior vice president
for academic affairs since July 1, 2018 Dr Wheeler came to Iona from the University at Albany (SUNY), where he served as dean of the School of Social Welfare, vice provost for public engagement, and professor A well-regarded and active scholar, Dr
Wheeler has published and presented extensively in the areas of health and mental health disparities; HIV prevention and intervention; minority health; individual and community resilience; LGBTQ community health and intervention; social justice; and community service and has been the recipient of numerous distinguished awards and honors
The President’s senior leadership team, comprised
of highly effective leaders, educators, and scholars, contributes to strategic planning efforts to enhance retention, expand faculty development opportunities, diversity, and ensure student success at Iona
ABOUT IONA COLLEGE
A diverse community of learners and scholars with a
commitment to academic excellence in the tradition
of American Catholic higher education, Iona College
celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2020, having opened
its doors in 1940 with nine Christian Brothers and
six lay faculty greeting the first class The Christian
Brothers named the College after Iona, a tiny island
off the west coast of Scotland, home to the historically
pivotal monastery of St Columba

Iona has a School of Arts and Sciences, the LaPenta
School of Business and is in the process of creating
the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health
Sciences Iona’s enhanced academic standing
is evidenced by its national accreditations in its
business, computer science, education, school
psychology, marriage and family therapy, chemistry,
occupational therapy, communication sciences
and disorders graduate program, and social work
programs The College offers a variety of learning
opportunities for students, from the academic
rigor of its Honors program to its multi-faceted and
increasingly diverse living and learning communities
Iona College was on the front lines of COVID-19 when
the virus first hit New Rochelle in March 2020 Hailed
as the “first to close, first to reopen,” Iona nevertheless
pushed ahead on its path of innovation A year later,
this small Catholic liberal arts college just north of
New York City has emerged as an anomaly in higher
education: while national enrollment plummeted,
Iona’s enrollment rose by 15 percent
Iona not only revamped many of its traditional course
offerings, but also launched several new degrees
this year The College also incentivized faculty to
reexamine and reinvent the curriculum and course
offerings to align with market changes and demands
The launch of a new logo, website and brand
promise: “Learn Outside the Lines” was the result of a community effort Iona also hired Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino, who is eager to claim the team’s 14th MAAC Championship and lead Iona even deeper into the March Madness of the NCAA tournament
The Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, meanwhile, launched its first two dynamic new
majors this year – a BA in Entrepreneurial Leadership and a BBA in Entrepreneurship Also new to the Hynes Institute is an online advanced certificate
in Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programs are designed to inspire students to be innovative leaders and problem-solvers, empowering them to be agents
of change in the world
From its founding through to today, Iona has welcomed a high percentage of first-generation college students The student body is diverse The alumni body is deeply committed to the success of the school The Board of Trustees is both engaged and invested in Iona’s long-term success in changing times, while appreciative of the school’s unique history In other words, Iona has a uniquely compelling story to tell
FACILITIES
New buildings and facilities, completely renovated
classrooms and simulation labs, and comprehensive
technology and equipment upgrades have also been
a critical component of Iona’s success The College
recently completed a $37 million renovation of its
renowned LaPenta School of Business, just months
after cutting the ribbon on the new Hynes Institute for
Entrepreneurship & Innovation and the dramatically
upgraded Hynes Athletics Center The new LaPenta
School of Business facility is having a dramatic impact
on Iona, more than doubling the academic space for
use by faculty and students from both the LaPenta
School of Business and the College’s School of Arts &
Science High-tech learning spaces include
state-of-the-art classrooms and computer labs, a central atrium
event space, case study and meeting rooms, faculty
offices, a lecture hall, a business career center, and an
expanded trading floor
Iona recently announced plans to build a new health sciences school in collaboration with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) The NYP-Iona School of Health Sciences will be housed on a new campus, which Iona is in the process of acquiring from Concordia College in Bronxville, NY The new campus is just 3 miles from Iona’s New Rochelle campus and adds
28 acres and over a dozen buildings to the growing Iona community NYP has gifted $20,000,000 to assist Iona with the build-out of a state-of-the-art health sciences program that will create a pipeline for clinical placements and full-time careers Additionally, the Bronxville campus will add new athletic fields, tennis courts and studio art and performance arts facilities that will provide more space for robust student activities including club sports from lacrosse to e-sports alongside traditional arts such Irish step dancing and a cappella singing

County), NY It is two miles from Long Island Sound,
20 miles north of Midtown Manhattan, and two miles
north of the New York City border Its lovely,
tree-lined 45- acre main campus features well-maintained
red-brick buildings with stately white columns and
is anchored on the eastern side by the new LaPenta
School of Business building
The surrounding town of New Rochelle has a
population of approximately 80,000 New Rochelle is
serviced by the Amtrak and Metro North commuter rail
station, the second busiest commuter railroad in North
America, offering service between New York City and northern suburbs in New York and Connecticut The city of New Rochelle offers a myriad of activities: theaters, parks, beaches, dining, nightlife, and cultural events

Initiated earlier this year, an agreement was finalized
for Iona College to acquire Concordia College’s
28-acre campus in Bronxville, NY Iona’s 45-28-acre campus
in northern New Rochelle is located approximately
three miles from the Bronxville campus This
announcement set the stage for Iona to pursue plans
for a school of health sciences on the Concordia
campus, furthering Iona’s strategic investment in
the field and building upon Concordia’s legacy of
excellence in health science education The pending
purchase creates opportunities for Iona to expand
new student programming and become a vibrant hub
of activity, hosting world-class seminars, speakers,
performing arts, athletics, art exhibits, and summer
camps
In July 2021, Iona College and NewYork-Presbyterian
announced the establishment of the
NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences (School
of Health Sciences or School) to be principally located
on the College’s Bronxville campus The
NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences is
expected to offer a new vision for collaborative health
care education, modern workforce development, and community care NewYork-Presbyterian supported the creation of the School of Health Sciences with a gift
of $20 million Iona College anticipates commencing classes at the Iona Bronxville campus in the fall of 2022
The collaboration between Iona College and NewYork-Presbyterian is a unique opportunity to shape the future of Iona College, train the next generation of health care professionals, and support the communities the institution serves The School of Health Sciences will provide Iona students with the opportunity to complement their liberal arts education with the knowledge and skills required to excel in the health care industry Through the relationship with NewYork-Presbyterian, Iona will offer cutting-edge education in the health sciences with an eye toward meeting the demands of the health care industry It

SCIENCES PROGRAMS
The School of Health Sciences will build upon Iona’s
existing health science programs (currently housed in
the School of Arts and Science) including:

• Social Work (BS)
• Communication Sciences & Disorders (MA)
• Marriage & Family Therapy (MS)
• Mental Health Counseling (MA)
Iona’s bachelor’s degree program in nursing offers both a traditional four-year program and an accelerated second-degree program Iona also offers
an Early Acceptance Program to talented students interested in eventually pursuing a graduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders
Plans to develop additional health science programs could include the following:
• Nurse Anesthesia (MSN)
• Clinical Nurse Specialist (MSN)

The ideal candidate will be an individual who
combines exemplary academic achievements in health
sciences with significant professional experience,
strategic leadership ability, collegiality, collaborative
and creative energy, and strong interpersonal and
communication skills, with a genuine passion for the
mission of the New York-Presbyterian Iona School of
Health Sciences and Iona College This position offers
the opportunity to shape a new and groundbreaking
School of Health Sciences; to help create the School’s
vision and direction; and build a successful record
of achievement in teaching, external relations, and
scholarship
Reporting to Provost Darrell Wheeler, the Dean
is charged with providing innovative leadership
necessary to shape an exemplary School of Health
Sciences that provides outstanding, cutting-edge and
interdisciplinary academic programs; attracts stellar
faculty members; and produces graduates who are
transformative in their disciplines The Dean is the chief
academic and administrative officer of the School of
Health Sciences
Plans are underway for significant renovations to the
Bronxville campus that will include state-of-the-art
labs, classrooms, and administrative offices and are
expected to be completed in 2022-23 The Dean
will work closely with facility and financial officers in overseeing ongoing renovations of health science spaces
ACCREDITATION AND ENROLLMENT
The new Dean will have oversight for the accreditation
of all programs, both existing and newly created,
in the School of Health Sciences and must have a deep understanding of accreditation processes The Dean will have oversight for preparing and reviewing reports, evaluations, and other related materials for accreditation associations
As the School of Health Sciences is expected to be
a major contributor in the College’s planned program and enrollment expansion, the Dean must be a person
of vision with the capability to lead and implement new programs and initiatives while monitoring enrollments, scheduling, and space needs to ensure appropriate allocation Approximately 25 percent of Iona’s 2021 incoming freshman class is expected to pursue health sciences
The Senior Vice President for Enrollment and Student Affairs has strengthened the enrollment process to attract diverse students and address demographic shifts using data driven decision making

STRENGTHEN EXISTING AND NEW
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
The Dean will help build the College’s regional
and national reputation for innovation in health
sciences Also of importance is enhancing the
quality of, advocating for, and building new
academic programs, hiring excellent faculty
members, as well as ensuring strong management
and oversight of existing academic programs
A major effort will involve strengthening existing
interdisciplinary programs, developing new
programs, assessing viability of existing programs,
and building on existing program strengths to form
strong collaborations with the other Schools at Iona
College In addition, there is an expectation that
the Dean promote and expand interdisciplinary
collaboration that values a liberal arts education and
fosters scholarly collaborations with other academic
units at the College Building a close collaborative
relationship with the Dean of the School of Arts
and Science will be important, since many of the
existing health sciences programs resided in the
School of Arts and Science and strong connections
between the two schools are likely to continue There
is an expectation that the new Dean will also build
partnerships with the New Rochelle and New York
industry and business community in collaboration
with the Dean of the LaPenta School of Business
FACULTY EXCELLENCE
The Dean must help enrich and sustain a culture of
excellent teaching, scholarship, and service, and
support productive faculty careers A key to the
Dean’s leadership effectiveness will be to quickly
establish an understanding of the people, programs,
and relationships that constitute the School of
Health Sciences community The Dean will lead in
the diversification and mentoring of health science
faculty and staff across race, class, gender identity,
nationality, age, ability, sexuality, and religious
affiliation The Dean will model transparent and
inspirational leadership that fosters a strong sense
of trust and respect for and from faculty, staff,
administration, and students, all within the framework
of shared governance The Dean will have a proven
record of effective mentoring, particularly of faculty
of color, new faculty members, and faculty in new
leadership positions This is especially important
for retention of strong faculty members who are
at an early stage in their academic careers While understanding, respecting, and advocating for the principle of shared governance, the Dean will lead the administration and faculty in supporting a heightened quality of academic excellence in terms
of instruction, curriculum, faculty scholarship, and service
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND RESOURCES
As economic realities affect all of higher education, the Dean will need the fiscal acumen to enable strong financial management across all areas of the School’s academic and administrative programs The Dean will be asked to oversee operating budgets, carefully steward existing resources, be vigilant with cost management, and utilize technology to support operational excellence Furthermore, the Dean should identify new and existing resources for program and infrastructure investment, be prepared
to make appropriate amendments to or reductions
in programs, lead conversations about potential new revenue streams, and raise external funds The Dean will be expected to work with the faculty, senior administration, and the Institutional Advancement team to articulate the strengths and needs of the academic programs to potential donors and build relationships and external support In anticipation of the next comprehensive campaign, this position will
be key in content expertise, donor communications, and effective communication of impact from gifts received by the School of Health Sciences in concert with Institutional Advancement, as well as set
expectations for faculty to participate as requested
INCLUSIVE EXCELLENCE
The Dean must have a demonstrated commitment
to Inclusive Excellence This includes a commitment
to the core principles of diversity and inclusion with
an explicit emphasis on equity and excellence in student learning The Dean will be a champion of creating learning and working environments that are rich in diversity and inclusive The Dean will work to decrease racial and cultural disparity in healthcare through inclusive admissions, faculty recruitment and retention, and training with an emphasis on social determinants of health
