CAD What is computer aided design?
Learn to use the basics of 2D software to design products
What is CAM? Use the laser cutter to produce your final product!
How has CAD / CAM helped you make a product?
Contextual Challenge
Desk Organizer
• Select a user,
• Investigate their needs and wants
• Write a design brief &
Specification
• Create a range of design ideas
• Make a prototype
• Evaluate
• Does your product work?
• How can you fix problems?

Polymer Based Materials
This is focused practical task with a small design element Students learn
timber theory and skills when working with timber based materials They
learn how to:
• Measure and mark out
• Remove wastage by sawing, sanding and drilling
• Create a dowel joint
• Adhesives suitable for joining timber based materials
This is focused practical task Students learn polymer theory and skills when working with polymer based materials They learn how to:
• Measure and mark out
• Remove wastage by sawing, sanding and filing
• Thermoforming using a strip heater
• Adhesives suitable for joining polymers
Students learn about computer aided design and computer aided manufacture
They use CAD software to draw put ideas for a simple product and then use CAM to make the product on a laser cutter
This project has more of a design focus and students can choose their own themes, materials and manufacturing processes They will combine the skills and knowledge built
up from the start of Year 7 to create a desk organizer for a user of their choice
