Position Description:
Psychologists in the UMBC Counseling Center are responsible for providing counseling services for students experiencing personal, social, and emotional difficulties that may impede functioning and academic progress They provide initial assessment, short term individual counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention, psycho-educational groups, outreach and developmental programs (including training for paraprofessional staff and student groups) and consultation to the UMBC community Psychologists provide training and supervision for our APA internship and for our externship program This position will report to the Counseling Center
Associate Director and work closely with staff from University Health Services, Career Services, Residential Life, Student Affairs staff, and faculty and staff from across the campus
Minimum Qualifications:
Successful candidates must (1) have a doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology and (2) be licensed
or license eligible as a psychologist in Maryland Early career and experienced psychologists are encouraged to apply
Desired Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates who have (1) experience working in a university counseling service with strong student service orientation, (2) Experience and interest in working with historically underrepresented or underserved communities and demonstrated ability to work with our diverse student body; experience and interest in working with the LGBTQ+ community is preferred, (3) an interest in mental health promotion and outreach, including social media and technology outreach, supporting peer health promotion, and/or (4) expertise in men’s issues We seek candidates who are highly collaborative and self-motivated
General Responsibilities and Duties
Provides intake interviews, short term individual and group counseling to UMBC students, and
referrals to external providers as appropriate Conducts ongoing case management, including clinical record maintenance, consultation, referral and follow-up
Provides crisis intervention and emergency services as needed, during operation hours serves as part
of an after-hours on call rotation
Trang 2 Provides outreach services and consultation to the UMBC community, including students, parents, faculty and staff
Provides training to student paraprofessionals (e.g Resident Life staff, Student Health Peer Educators)
Provides training to doctoral-level psychology interns and/or externs, including clinical supervision and didactic instruction
Provides regular consultation with Community Directors through the CC – Residential Life consultative liaison
Participates in Counseling Center professional development programs
Serves on Counseling Center, university, divisional, and departmental committees
Operates under requirements of Maryland State Mental Health Law and the ethical guidelines of the American Psychological Association
Some evening and weekends required
Other duties as assigned

The UMBC Counseling Center exists to offer professional psychological services to UMBC students to enhance their personal growth, enrich their lives, and maximize their ability to function successfully academically The Counseling Center further strives to contribute to the mental and emotional health of the campus community through consultation, outreach, training and educational programs All professional services at the Counseling Center are provided or supervised by licensed clinicians Services include individual counseling, group
counseling, and a variety of psycho-educational programming (e.g time management, stress management, test anxiety, and procrastination) Both personal and career concerns can be addressed at the Counseling Service, and all counseling services are free and confidential The Counseling Center is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services, Inc (IACS) and provides all services within guidelines adopted
by this agency
