5 Please describe your background or training from work and/or life experience that relates
to your interest in government
Education has been part of my life in many ways over the years I am an educator now, serving
as a tenured faculty member at Brandeis University in the International Business School There I teach both graduate students (master’s level students in several programs such as the Masters
of Business Administration, the Masters of Science in Business Analytics, and the Master of Arts
in International Economics and Finance) and undergraduate students I also have an
appointment at Brandeis’ Heller School for Social Policy and Management, where I teach in an Executive MBA Program for Physicians I have been at Brandeis for 16 years, and I am a highly regarded teacher with consistently high teaching evaluations, including the highest rated elective course in the programs I won a Brandeis grant for Teaching and Innovation The Provost has recently chosen to appoint me to the newly formed Committee for Teaching and Learning
In addition to my teaching at Brandeis, I hold an appointment as a Senior Lecturer at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, where I have taught in the school’s flagship MBA program, the Leaders for Global Operations program, the System Design and Management program, the Sloan Fellows program, and a variety of courses in the Executive Education program I have a visiting professor’s appointment at Brown University in the Watson Institute of International and Public Affairs where I teach in the Masters of Public Policy program
I am also an avid practitioner of experiential learning, in particular through the use of
healthcare simulation I am a Principal Faculty Member at the Center for Medical Simulation,
an affiliate of the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital There, I teach in clinical courses (e.g., anesthesia, labor and delivery) as well as in our programs for simulation educators both domestically and overseas
In some of my scholarly research, I have studied issues in education I have one paper that investigates the role of primary and secondary education for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines Another conference presentation focused on masterful teaching for K-12 teachers integrating systems thinking and experiential education into their classes
Trang 3Beyond my role as instructor, I have also served for a number of years as Trustee (i.e., member
of the Board of Directors) for the Creative Learning Exchange, a not-for-profit organization that provides support for K-12 programs around the country, mostly in the service of its goal to promote systems thinking
I also lead the Forrester Fellows Program for a select group of junior high and high school teachers at the Innovation Academy Charter School in Tyngsboro The program aims include professional development for teachers, creating teaching materials and activities, and building community among the teachers
I am also a parent of a 14-year old, 8th grade boy in the Bedford public school system, now at JGMS Through him, I have been able to see the excellence of our school system, along with an occasional imperfection I am volunteering for this position because I would like to see our strong system continue to thrive, and I believe I can make a contribution towards making that happen
Truthfully, I am also what I would call a “soccer dad.” My son has played on the JGMS team for
2 years and has played on the town recreation travel teams for many year My wife and I attend almost every game and even many practices Consequently, I have a helpful network of other parents of children in the Bedford schools who are always willing to share experiences and opinions
I look forward to the chance to discuss further my life experiences and how they relate to my interest in serving on the School Committee
Part 2:
7 What community experience have you had? Have you served as an officer or held any leadership position in any other community organization(s)?

• Trustee (Board member), Creative Learning Exchange
• Trustee (Board member), Burlington Presbyterian Church
• Session Member (Board member), Burlington Presbyterian Church
• Secretary and Policy Council Member (Board member), System Dynamics Society (an international professional organization for scholars and practitioners in my field)
• Vice President, Secretary, Board Member of the International Executive Council of my national college fraternity
I have many other examples of leadership positions:
Trang 4• Many years as officer in the Masonic Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Free and Accepted Masons
• Many years of service to the System Dynamics Society (my professional society) as Secretary, member of the Executive Committee, Thread Chair and Program Chair for the annual conference, Chair of the Organization and By-Laws Committee, and chair or member of selection committees for several awards
• Ongoing service as alumnus to the MIT Ballroom Dance Team
• Treasurer of the MIT Club of Chicago
• Volunteer for the Bedford Citizens Corps CERT Team
