OLD BUSINESS

DISCUSSED Overview of the programs including the following:

Ag Ed - Classes, enrollment, questions

Environmental Science - Classes, enrollment, permaculture lab, A.S Degree & Certificate, questions

NEW BUSINESS

Agriculture Science (Ag Ed & Ag Com)

We discussed ways to expand the program and we recognized more students are enrolling in Ag Ed classes,

so what could we do? We discussed adding a B.S degree as the group saw great opportunities for that here

in the Modesto area They recommended adding a certificate to add recognition and perhaps show how many students are really taking these basic core classes throughout the department The recommendation was to add a certificate that would be called “Agricultural Science Certificate” and would have a range of required units to look at something around 14 but 10-16 units might work

Environmental Science

1 Approved the continuation of the degree & certificates with recognition that class substitutions may occur as the major grows and expands

2 We discussed Water Management as a potential Certificate what that might look like compared to other programs that are currently being taught Sacramento State has a program and it’s believed Merced College had a program Who would teach the class? We would look for adjunct instructors potentially people from City of Modesto water treatment plant We discussed looking at Sac State classes as a model for our classes and that MJC Ag would work with the City of Modesto to develop these courses as they see a need for employment in this area Discussed and approved adding necessary classes as well as going thru the process of developing a certificate

3 Discussed the reactivation of previously taught classes and looked at how they would fit into the degree The list of classes are ENSCI 112 Introduction to Sustainable Systems (Reactivation) approved

4 Previous classes that had been approved at last advisory meeting and are now active

AGGE 150 Sustainable Ag Production (Reactivation) ENSCI 110 California Water (Reactivation)

5 What are things we need to provide thru Equipment, funding, Strong Workforce grant(s)original and new grant funding sources? The committee agrees funding either existing or ongoing needs to be provided for:

a Solar, water collection, weather system, sustainable farming, alternative crops, composting, grey water, bee pollination, school pickup replacement, equipment rental,

6 OTHER: Looking at a natural resources certificate, Consider farming opportunities for the Patterson property and how that could fit into the program,

FDS - Food Safety/Food Processing

1 Reactivation and name change has occurred as discussed and approved at last advisory meeting Approved discussion of attaching these classes to a major in the department of Ag Ag Business was suggested or even Agriculture, Animal, or Plant Science would be a place to house such a

certificate It was recognized that there is a need for the classes and a certificate It was also

approved that a single lead person was need for these classes and program area to build and grow Below are the classes they were changed to 200 level classes vs 300 Perhaps having outside agencies come in and provide individual certificates would be a good direction to fill the need and provide our students with more opportunities
