An Official West Virginia Sesquicentennial Event
Trang 2Conference Overview
“Rediscover West Virginia through Reading” is the theme of the 58 th Conference
of the West Virginia Reading Association The conference logo features two distinct symbols-the Cardinal and the book Not only is the Cardinal the Official State Bird, but also the Cardinal is the symbol of hope The book is the symbol of reading By teaching children to read, we give children hope for their future success This year’s conference is a tribute to the dedicated educators who have taught children how to read for the last 150 years in West Virginia
Reading has shaped West Virginia’s past, present and future For example, reading newspapers rallied the cry for secession from Virginia West Virginia authors have challenged us to take even greater levels of pride in our heritage and ourselves In addition, educators teach students how to apply reading strategies to content about West Virginia’s people, places, and events with the ultimate goal of creating a new West Virginia with future West Virginians who are committed to a more diverse, global and technological view of the world During 2013, West Virginians will celebrate the 150 th Anniversary of West Virginia Statehood The West Virginia Reading Association will celebrate 45 years as a state affiliate of the International Reading Association, and 35 years
of leadership development of reading educators This conference will occur near the end of a year-long Sesquicentennial Celebration in West Virginia and will attempt to answer two key questions: (1) “What have we done, are doing and will be doing to improve reading instruction in our schools?”; (2) “How do we use reading instruction to improve West Virginia Studies in the curriculum?”
The West Virginia Reading Association welcomes you to our conference and invites you to learn, enjoy and celebrate this milestone event in our state’s history and the role we will play in moving West Virginia forward to the Bicentennial in 2063

Trang 4WVRA President Kathy Chapman’s Welcome
It is an honor and a privilege to welcome you to the 58 th annual conference of the West Virginia Reading Association I hope you enjoy the next two days here at The Greenbrier Hotel which is one of West Virginia’s most exquisite and historic resorts The 2013 WVRA Conference Committees have worked hard to schedule inspiring sessions, dynamic keynote speakers, and authors, many who have roots in our great state of West Virginia
Over the past few months as I have traveled throughout this wonderful state, I have been reminded of its majestic beauty, cultural diversity, rich historic background, and family heritage We, as West Virginians, have much of which to
be proud As teachers and educators, we have a responsibility to pass this heritage to the next generation through our desire to learn Throughout this conference, I hope you take every opportunity to renew your desire for learning
Remember, this is a time for reminiscing on the successes of the past, studying the performances of the present, and looking toward the goals and dreams of the future According to Winston Churchill, “Success is not final; failure is not fatal; it is courage to continue that counts.”
Please enjoy your time with us as we Rediscover West Virginia through Reading God Bless!

Flags are almost as old as civilization Imperial Egypt as well as the armies of Babylon, Chaldea, and Assyria followed the colors of their kings The Old Testament of the Bible frequently mentions the use of banners distinguishing different tribes and people
Many flags of different designs were present in parts of the American colonies before the Revolution, and when the struggle for independence united the colonies, those colonists wanted
a single flag to represent our new nation It was not until shortly before the Civil War that the Stars and Stripes actually became the National Colors
Since 1777 our national colors have changed 26 times The current design for “Old Glory” was adopted on July 4 th , 1960 Our flag is the most widely known symbol in our country, and is easily identified throughout the world Not only does it mark our government office, Forts, Bases, and sea ports, it adorns our ships, planes, as well as every Soldier, Airmen, and Marine
During official ceremonies, the national colors are always given the position of highest honors and will be positioned to the far right of unit, state, or other organizational flags
Throughout the posting of the colors, military members, both past and present, will stand at attention, remain silent, and render their salute, while all others in attendance shall stand and place their right hand over their heart Both actions are symbolic ways of rendering our respect
to the Nation’s Flag and to the men and women living and deceased who served this country When instructed by President Chapman, please rise and remain standing for the posting of the colors followed by the Pledge to the Flag
