CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Nursing management within the health care system

Management functions of planning, organizing and staffing studied within the framework of leadership in health care organizations

The student is required to receive a satisfactory evaluation in the practicum experience in order to be successful in the course Preceptor evaluations must be completed, signed, and submitted to faculty according to instructions Individual final grades will not be posted until all required documents are received If you are concerned or have a question about your grade at any time in the course, please make an appointment with the faculty member to discuss

board postings will not be accepted If a student anticipates being late with any

assignment, the student must contact the faculty members PRIOR to the due date

DROP POLICY: Consistent with the UNCG policies, the last day to withdraw from a course without

incurring a WF grade (withdraw failing) is March 2, 2018

FINAL EXAMINATION SCHEDULE: There is no final exam for this course

DRESS POLICY: Graduate students in clinical settings should dress in professional business attire

as appropriate to the agency and the type of clinical experience As a rule, dress as the preceptor dresses (if they wear a lab coat, the student should wear a lab coat) When functioning in the student role, an engraved name pin in the following format must be worn There are several online companies that may be used to order a name pin Students may also wish to order from a local office supply store Many agencies will require that students wear their employee name badge or an agency

student name badge as well as the school name tag

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Communication is a requirement of this course Therefore,

students should have the ability to access Canvas and participate in the discussion forums

Students must also have an active UNCG email account (iSpartan account, not your email through Canvas) This email account and the Canvas announcement page should be checked

on a regular basis for class and assignment information Check the UNCG email and Canvas several times per week in order to stay informed aboutthe course and to foster excellent

communication between all students in the course If you need to contact a faculty member, you may do so via email or in the course discussion board forum labeled “questions for the

professor” Remember this is a public forum, open to the entire class If you have a private of sensitive issue, email the faculty member directly Please allow 48 hours for faculty to

respond to emails

Etiquette expectations: or “netiquette” refers acceptable behavior in all online discussions,

email and other forms of communications within the course Professional netiquette is an

expectation and required at all times This includes (a) avoid writing in all capital letters (this is considered yelling, try to use fonts such as bold, italics, and underline sparingly); (b) no name calling or offensive language; (c) respond politely and appreciate differences in opinions; (d) craft your message in a professional manner (remember this is not a text message); and (e) adhere to the MSN Administration Concentration confidentiality statement throughout the

Graduate Writing Resources: All students are expected to write at the graduate level The current

edition of the American Psychological Association’s writing manual is used to grade all written work Students should purchase this book and use it as a resource when writing all assignments Students should limit the use of quotations and seek to synthesize, analyze and integrate information Proper citation is essential The UNCG Library tutorial on plagiarism is very helpful

All assignments including discussion questions should reflect the course readings Where

possible, students are encouraged to read beyond the course assignments in order to contribute

to their understanding of a topic

ASSIGNMENTS FOR ACHIEVING LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1 Discussion Board Forum Each student is required to post an initial thread in response to the

provided prompt for each Discussion Forum Each thread must be at least 500 words (excluding

salutations and references) and should be supported with at least two (2) references In addition to the thread, each student is required to reply to at least two (2) different classmates' threads Each reply must be at least 250 words (excluding salutations and references) and should be supported with at least one (1) reference Discussion Board threads should include all key components Major points should be supported by course readings, current (within 5 years) literature, and pertinent conceptual or personal experience examples The purpose of these forums is to promote scholarly discussion and exploration of the content All postings in the discussion forum must be pasted text (NOT attachments unless indicated) to facilitate easy reading Proper use of current APA formatting for references, correct grammar and spelling, proper sentence structure, evidence of critical thinking, and a robust discussion supported by evidence is expected Reponses that do not contribute to the content of the discussion will be disregarded (e.g., “I agree”, “You did a great job”, or “I have nothing else to add” are examples of responses that do not contribute to content) Initial threads are due by 11:59 P.M on Thursday of the assigned week and replies are due by 11:59 p.m on Sunday of the

same assigned week Late discussion board postings will not be accepted and will affect the

grade Students are highly encouraged to post more than the minimum entries and to post early

The final discussion board grade is an average of the graded forums throughout the semester

DISCUSSION FORUM GRADING RUBRIC

2 Practicum Experience/Journal Each student must complete the designated number of clinical

hours associated with selected support and specialty courses in the MSN Administration

Concentration Please see the MSN Administration Concentration Plan of Study Each student must identify and confirm a nurse leader to serve as preceptor for their clinical experience Preceptors should hold a master or doctoral degree, preferably in nursing but not required Students are allowed

to complete their clinical hours in their place of employment but this is not guaranteed nor required It

is recommended that students identify preceptors who are not their immediate supervisors, however, this is not required It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the appropriate signatures on the

preceptor agreement form (see course documents in learning management system) This form should

be signed by both the student and preceptor and submitted with a current copy of the preceptor's resume to the course faculty for approval This form must be submitted for each clinical experience even if the student has used the same preceptor in the past for another clinical course If a student

plans to use the same preceptor for two clinical courses in the same semester, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain approval from the course faculty for each course

The preceptor must be approved by the faculty member prior to the student beginning the practicum experience Students must also be cleared by the School of Nursing representative and the Clinical Affiliate prior to beginning the clinical experience Even if the student works in the agency, the SON and clinical affiliate must confirm that all necessary paperwork and documentation is submitted and approved prior to beginning the clinical time Any clinical hours logged prior to approval by the SON, course faculty and/or the clinical affiliate will not be counted for course credit

The practicum journal is the documentation of the practicum experience for this course In addition to accruing the required number of practicum hours, students must demonstrate progression toward meeting the established objectives by providing in-depth documentation of the practicum experiences

as evidenced in the practicum journal entries and a satisfactory preceptor evaluation Failure to pass the practicum requirements will result in failure of the course regardless of the course grade See the course calendar for specific due dates and times for submissions All journal entries will be submitted via assignments in Canvas Do not email the journals to the faculty member(s) Please review the Practicum/Journal Instructions in course documents prior to contacting the faculty member with

questions Students must submit the number of journals as noted on the course calendar

3 Reflective Exercises The student will complete reflective exercises throughout the semester in

current APA format See the course calendar for due dates and reflective exercise instructions for topics Each Reflective Exercise must include a title page and reference page Students must cite 2-3

current scholarly sources in addition to the course textbooks Each paper must be 3-5 pages

(excluding the title page and reference page) See the specific rubrics for each reflective exercise (located in Canvas)

4 Group Case Study Presentation Students will be divided into groups for a case study

presentation You will find your group assignments in Canvas Each group will have a case study (listed in Canvas under course documents according to your group number) to complete for a final group presentation The purpose of this assignment is to promote scholarly discussion and

exploration of the issue while applying the concepts learned in the course As a group, the students will present their response to the case with the group’s rationale as a narrated PPT in a final

discussion forum Each group will post their presentation as a thread in the Group Case Study

Presentation Discussion Forum.

Collaborate on a solution: The group discussion should begin early in the semester to promote a

professional and scholarly dialogue that incorporates all the content from the course Your group will

be responsible for collaborating on a solution Everyone must participate in the discussion of the case

in a substantial way (substantial means that you do more than agree with others Everyone must bring in information from their readings, those assigned and where possible, additional ones It is insufficient to only bring in information from prior experiences – it is certainly OK to include this

information, but insufficient to ONLY contribute prior experiences) It is OK to disagree with each other, challenge assumptions, add to another’s comments, etc BUT, at the time of presentation, it must be clear what your solution is, and that all are in agreement

Be creative with your presentations Be sure to review the grading rubric and to address all areas of the rubric Each group member must be involved in the presentation of each case response Each group member should have a speaking part in the narrated PPT The members of the presenting

group are expected to provide questions to facilitate the discussion in the discussion forum Your

Group Case Study Presentation Discussion Forum For this discussion forum you will post

your group’s narrated case study presentation within the initial discussion forum thread Each group should post their presentation by Thursday of week 14 at 11:59 PM EST and the discussion forum members of the other case study groups should provide professional feedback by Sunday

of week 14 at 11:59 PM EST (your discussion forum groups are a combination of three case study groups.)

Each group will need to post their presentation as an attachment to the discussion forum thread The group will only need to post the presentation once (so elect someone from your group to post your presentation, not everyone will have an initial thread in this discussion forum) If you had to narrate your slides in separate files, that is fine, just be sure to identify in what order the files should be viewed so that others reading your post will be sure to view the slides in the correct order Be sure to indicate this in the discussion thread where you post the slides
