Model Answer:

Countries benefit from the growth of tourism, for local people now share the wealth that tourists Undeveloped beaches now have hotels providing employment for local people From having to work hard to make a living, they now find well-paying jobs Business is encouraged, especially the restaurant trade and local craftsmen So, tourists provide good market for local merchandise that they like However, not all is well in tourist countries in spite of the prevailing optimism for tourism The environment is the victim of tourism at the same time, in the sense that the appearance of the seaside spots and landscape is destroyed due

to tourist activities such overcrowding, pollution and winter sports Seaside holiday spots are losing their appeal because of overcrowding and pollution Tourist demands caused severe damage to the land and people ‘s way of life This is making the local farmers lose their independent life in exchange with the good

This graph shows the average number of hours each day by men and women in eight countries in the developing world, spanning a period of six years from 1998 to 2003 The different countries vary a great deal in terms of the hours worked, but across all countries women consistently work more hours than men

On average, in the eight developing countries, women work one hour and nine minutes more each day than men The country with the biggest discrepancy between working times of men and women is Benin, where women work an average of 2 hours and 25 minutes more than men each day There is a marked discrepancy

in Mexico as well, where women work an average of one hour and 45 minutes more than men each day In contrast, the country with the least difference is Mauritius, where women still work an extra 24 minutes each day In the other five countries, the extra time that women work each day is fairly uniform, more or less an hour

What is strikingly different, however, is the variation in the hours that people, both men and women, work in the different countries For example, although women work on average more than men, the men in Mongolia work more than women in any other country, while women in South Africa work less than men in almost any other country Indeed, the difference in time worked by people in these two countries is nearly four hours, which is much more dramatic than the difference between hours that men and women work in any

Model Answer

In some countries, fifteen-year-old school students are offered the choice of academic or vocational training

In this essay, I shall outline the reasons for adopting this two-stream system, and suggest its advantages

As economies become more complex and more specialised, workers need a high degree of competence Countries where there is an emphasis on vocational training hope to improve their economic competitiveness

with a young skilled workforce Those that have chosen to train prospective employees while still at school may have an even sharper competitive edge In my view, an education system with a purely academic curriculum suits about 40% of students Admittedly, people who go on to university generally find employment on graduation if not in their field, and successful post-graduates are almost invariably offered highly paid jobs However, obtaining a degree takes time and dedication For people who do not wish to do this, or who do not have the ability, they are far less likely to find work on leaving school where academic study has been the only option, particularly if their marks and self-esteem are low A fortunate few do gain employment, but more commonly, even in the development world, the majority of young school leavers are faced with unemployment – a scourge to society and a cause of distress to individuals Therefore, countries like Germany have decided that all school students should be placed in either an academic or a vocational stream from fifteen From an individual’s perspective, being a plumber, for example, does not only mean that drainage functions well, but that the plumber belongs to an organisation of tradespeople and is part of a respected tradition Starting this training at the age of fifteen ensures that an adolescent has a head start with regard to jobs as well as a clear focus and sense of personal worth

I firmly believe there needs to be an alternative curriculum to the academic at secondary; otherwise, on leaving school, too many young people are adrift, and specialised industries lack a skilled workforce
