NYU Classes allows instructors to create a customized online site to accompany their course Determining which tools within NYU Classes are necessary to achieve specific pedagogical goals is the first step towards designing a site The below document includes four common teaching and learning objectives many instructors facilitate with the help of a learning management system Each solution offered corresponds to several tools within NYU Classes Click here to download the Teaching and Learning with NYU Classes guide
How can I publish
information about
my course?
Solution: Settings, Syllabus,
Announcements, and Calendar
You can edit the name of your
course site along with the
information displayed on the home
page of your course site by going
to Settings > Edit Site Information
Add text, images, or even a video to
introduce your students to your
course!
Use the Syllabus Tool to inform
your students about the course description, objectives, and much more! You can either create and add Syllabus Items, or Redirect to an existing syllabus file that you’ve
uploaded to your Resources folder,
or have as an external URL
Use the Announcements Tool to
inform your students about upcoming events, meetings, or date changes Add an attachment or send
an accompanying email notification with new announcements The Announcements Tool will even automatically create notifications for:
o The Assignments Tool
o The Tests & Quizzes Tool
All course site Announcements will
filter into the home page of your course site
Use the Calendar Tool to organize
the course calendar for your students Each item added to the calendar can be customized to include a title, message, duration time, event location, and event frequency Events can be created for your entire course or select groups
How can I make
course content
available to my
students?
Solution: Resources, Groups,
News, External Link and Lessons
The Resources Tool is the place for
all your course documents and files
Within the Resources Tool, you can:
o Upload files (PDF, Word, images)
o Add web links (URLs)
o Create and organize multiple
folders
Resources folders can be available
to your entire course, or specific
Groups or Sections
Just want to share content with
specific students? Create Groups!
Within Settings, you can manually Manage Groups Send Messages, Assignment, and Announcements to specific groups, or create unique Resource Folders, Forums, and Tests and Quizzes just for groups
The News Tool is an RSS reader;
this allows you to embed any RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed into your course site An RSS feed collects news updates in real time
RSS feeds are available from a variety of outside news or blog websites Within your course site, you may have more than one News Tool
The External Link Tool allows you
to share any website within your course site! The External Link Tool can either display the web site within the body of your course site, or open
in a new tab Within your course site, you may have more than
one External Link Tool
The Lessons Tool helps organize
various forms of content, interaction, and participation within your course site and presents them as a series of intuitive modules, or lessons, that your students may follow By aggregating the functionality and data within other tools into a single place, you can drastically simplify the tasks required of your students Content/functionality can either be created directly within the tool, or aggregated from the existing tools within your NYU Classes course site

How can I
encourage
collaboration?
Solution: Forums, Chat
Room, Messages, Set
Permissions, Roster
Use Forums Tool to facilitate
asynchronous discussions with your
students The Forums Tool can hold
multiple forums, topics, and
threads Note: Notifications are sent
to your email address when an
individual replies to your thread to
encourage ongoing participation
Use the Chat Room to facilitate
synchronous discussions with your
students The Chat Room can hold multiple rooms open to all
participants within your course site
or select groups
All course site participants may use
the Message Tool to send private
messages; Messages can be sent to individual or multiple recipients as well as to
specific Groups and/or Sections withi
n the course site Note: All
messages are sent, received, and recorded within the Message tool;
only a copy of an NYU Classes message may be sent to a recipient’s personal email address
Setting Permissions within several
tools allows instructors to determine the level of participation they’d like their students and/or TAs to have
within a course site Below are the tools with Permission settings:
o Resources
o Calendar
o Announcements
o Forums & Topics
o Assignments
o Gradebook (TA only)
o Chat Room
Use the Roster Tool to help both
you and your students know each other better! The Roster Tool displays all site participants’ names, their role in your course site, and their NYU Classes My Profile!
Note: To create or edit your NYU
Classes My Profile, go to My
Workspace > My Profile
How can I grade
students’ work or
provide feedback?
Solution: Gradebook, File
Exchange Tool
Use the Gradebook as a way to
organize all of the work and tasks
you assign to your students
The Gradebook can be custom
configured in several ways including
weighted categories or setting your
own grade scale
The Gradebook can automatically
collect and organize graded items
from Forums, Assignments, and
Tests and Quizzes:
o To grade student work in Forums, you must first create an item/entry
in Gradebook and then link the desired Forum or Topic You can either grade students’ discussions (thread) within the Forum or from the Gradebook Statistical information within the Forum is provided to help determine participation
o To grade Assignments, you may either add the Assignment to the Gradebook, or link the Assignment
to an existing Gradebook item/entry Feedback for an assignment is done through
the Assignments Tool Note: If
you add an Assignment to the Gradebook you will only be able to assign and modify grades via the Assignment Tool and not directly from the Gradebook
o To grade Tests and Quizzes, a Gradebook item/entry will be created once your assessment is
published Note: Unlike Forums
and Assignments, you cannot create a grade book entry first then link to a specific test/quiz
The File Exchange Tool is a quick
way to share private files or documents with each of your students This tool provides an individual folder for each student in your course Both students and the instructor are notified when a file has been added to their File Exchange
tool Note: The File Exchange tool is
not integrated with the Gradebook
NOTE: To turn on any tool within your course site, go to Settings > Add/Edit Tools
