THIS WEEK'S FOCUS:
SPOKEN ENGLISH: PRONUNCIATION OF PAST TENSE MARKER
Past tense marker refers to the "-ed" (suffix) added to a word (especially a regular verb) to
form its past tense The pronunciation of past tense marker takes various forms It can be
pronounced as /ɪd/, /d/ or as /t/ The last "-d" or "-ed" added to a verb to form its past tense is
pronounced differently depending on some certain factors These factors will be elucidated below shortly
Many speakers and users of English pronounce the past tense marker wrongly They
pronounce the "-ed" added to any verb either as /ed/ or as /d/ which is very wrong, for
example, some pronounce 'baked' as /beɪkd/ which is very wrong The correct pronunciation should be /beɪkt/, while others pronounce 'waited' as /'weɪtəd/, when the correct
pronunciation should be /'weɪtɪd/ It is important to note that some "-ed" are pronounced as /
t/, while some pronounced as /ɪd/
As proficient speakers and users of English, our pronunciation matters a lot We must
pronounce English words according to standard phonetic rules Our pronunciation is very
important, as it also helps our accent, because as English speakers our accent is our asset
Like I said earlier, we shall be looking at some rules guiding the pronunciation of past tense marker in English phonetics
RULES GUIDING THE PRONUNCIATION OF PAST TENSE MARKER
1 When the past tense marker is added to words (regular verbs) ending with a vowel sound
(monophthongs or diphthongs), the past tense marker is pronounced as sound /d/ E.g
lied - /laɪd/
aired - /eərd/
sued - /suːd/
agreed - /əˈgriːd/
care d - /keə(r)d/
Trang 2cured - /kjʊə(r)d/
feared - /fɪə(r)d/
2 In addition, when the past tense marker is added to words (regular verbs) ending with a
voiced consonant, the past tense marker is pronounced as /d/ E.g
razed - /reɪzd/
robbed - /rɒbd/
lived - /lɪvd/
begged - /begd/
claimed - /kleɪmd/
failed - /feɪld/
moved - /muːvd/
3 But, If the past tense marker is added to words ending with the following seven voiceless consonant sounds /f/, /k/, /s/, /p/, /ʃˈ/, /tʃ/, and /θ/, (with the exception of /t/ and /h/), then, the past tense marker will be pronounced as /t/ E.g.
coughed - /kɒft/
packed - /pækt/
stopped - /stɒpt/
kissed - /kɪst/
passed - /paːst/
searched - /sɜː(r)tʃt/
slashed - /slæʃt/
laughed - /laːft/
slapped - /slæpt/
knocked - /nɒkt/
4 However, if the past tense marker is added to words (regular verbs) ending with the
consonant letters "d" and "t", the past tense marker will be pronounced as /ɪd/ E.g.
Trang 3want-ed - /'wɒntɪd/
wait-ed - /'weɪtɪd/
shift-ed - /'ʃɪftɪd/
count-ed - /'kaʊtɪd/
wound-ed - /'wuːndɪd/
conclud-ed - /kən'klu:dɪd/
hand-ed - /'hændɪd/
fad-ed - /'feɪdɪd/
