Introductory requirements:

The choice of specialization according to the rules set by the dean's office (at least the good grade (4.0) from the subjects: Fitness – group exercises with music and Fitness – new trends in individual training in the 1st and 2nd semester of studies)

Course objectives:

1 - Preparing students to work as a Pre and postnatal exercise specialist, e.g to design and conduct classes for pregnant and postpartum women in a safe and methodical manner

2 - Preparing students to popularize prenatal and postnatal physical activity as part of a pro-health lifestyle

Methods of learning outcomes’ verification and assessment criteria:

Criteria and methods of evaluation of the learning outcomes:

W1 – preparing exercise plan and theoretical written test:

For a pass mark student gives min 60% correct answers,

For a good mark student gives min 80% correct answers,

For a very good mark student gives min 90% correct answers

W2 - theoretical written test, assessment criteria as above

U1, U2, U3, U4:

1 Practical test to assess the skill of conducting exercises classes for pregnant or postpartum women using proper methods and with the consideration of women’s possibilities and needs, and using proper and attractive equipment

2 Practical test to assess the knowledge and technical skills to perform cardio, resistance, stretching, targeted exercises (pelvic floor, abdominal, body posture exercises, birth positions, breathing exercises)

For a pass mark student performs three exercises from three randomly selected tasks,

For a good mark student performs four exercises from three randomly selected tasks,

For a very good mark student performs five exercises from three randomly selected tasks

K1, K2, K3 – Observation during the conduction of the exercise classes

To pass the course (with at least satisfactory grade) a student must achieve all learning outcomes listed in the syllabus for at least a satisfactory grade.

Requirements for students with the Individual Studies Organization (including % of required attendance):

All above, activity on 50% of classes planned for the course (excluding organizational and test meeting)

Course contents:

Theoretical classes:

1 Selected issues in the anatomy of the reproductive system of a woman

2 Physiology of pregnancy - short characteristics (periods of pregnancy, systemic changes in pregnant women, changes in the kinetics of pregnant women in individual trimesters)

3 Physiology of delivery and postpartum

4 Postpartum changes in the woman's body, lactation

5 Selected issues in the pathology of pregnancy, labour and delivery and postpartum

6 Tools supporting cooperation with gynecologists, obstetricians and midwives (eg PARmed-X for Pregnancy questionanaire) to determine the optimal set of physical exercises for the pregnant and postpartum woman Rules for conducting an initial interview with a pregnant or postpartum woman

7 Basic principles of participation in physical activity during pregnancy, childbirth and in the first year after birth

8 The benefits of physical activity during pregnancy and after birth for the mother and the baby

9 Contraindications to exercise during pregnancy, childbirth and in the first year after birth

10 The most frequent ailments during pregnancy and the possibility of their mitigation through physical activity

11.The importance of pelvic floor muscle exercises for the health of pregnant and postpartum women

12 The most common disease entities typical of pregnancy and their prevention through physical activity Principles of physical activity in high-risk pregnancy

13 Nutrition principles of pregnant and lactating women (weight gain during pregnancy, caloric demand in pregnancy, drop in body weight after delivery, caloric demand in lactation)

14.Exercises targeted for pregnant women in different trimesters, including pelvic floor exercises

15.Exercises targeted for women in childbirth at different ways of termination of pregnancy (natural childbirth or operating)

16.Exercises targeted for women in the first year after birth

17.Breathing exercises targeted for pregnant women giving birth and the postpartum period

18.Body posture and neuromotor exercises pregnancy and postpartum

19.Birth positions

20.Visualization of pregnancy and childbirth

21.The structure of the prenatal and postnatal programmes

22.Methods to assess the intensity of physical exercise recommended for pregnant women and after delivery

23.Principles of planning and implementation of group training programs for pregnant and postpartum women based on popular fitness forms, exemplary lesson plans

24.The use of sports equipment in classes for pregnant women and after childbirth

Practical classes:

1 Aerobic exercises for pregnant women based on basic aerobics steps, modification of technique and intensity of exercises

for individual needs

2 Resistance and stretching exercises for the upper and lower body in individual trimesters of pregnancy and postpartum

3 Body posture and neuromotor exercises pregnancy and postpartum

4 Pelvic floor muscle exercises

5 Breathing exercises targeted for pregnant women giving birth and the postpartum period

6 Birth positions

7 Relaxation in pregnancy and after chilbirth.

8 Visualization of pregnancy and childbirth

9 Exercises to reduce typical ailments during pregnancy

10.Examples of exercise sets and programmes for pregnant and postpartum women, after different ways of birth (natural v operative)

11.The use of sports equipment in classes for pregnant women and after childbirth

12 Cuing and instructing in aerobic exercises (choreography to music)

13 Cuing and instructing in resistance, stretching, neuromotor and body posture exercises

14 Instructing and conducting of birth positions, relaxation and visualisation

15 Independent planning and conducting of exercise units for pregnant and postpartum women

Assessment form: Semesters 3-5: course credit with a grade.Semester 6: theoretical and practical exam.
