The MRC/SOT Proudly Presents the Annual Fall Meeting
scheduled for Friday, October 29, 2004:
“Ocular Toxicology Advancements – Way Beyond Getting the Red Out”
A common perception exists that a major arm of toxicology is still devoted to testing rabbits in primary ocular irritation studies – not so Advancements in ocular surgery and novel means of introducing ocular therapeutic agents locally to their site of action have spurred interest and the need for developing animal models of ocular disease, as well as techniques for determining whether such interventions are safe and effective for patients at risk for developing or already suffering visual impairment from chronic disease.
It is with great pleasure that we extend an invitation for you to join us for the upcoming Fall meeting of the Midwest Regional Chapter of the Society of Toxicology This meeting provides an opportunity to learn firsthand how ocular toxicology has advanced “Way Beyond Getting the Red Out” Speakers will address general ocular toxicology, ocular pathology, electrophysiological assessments of ocular function, techniques for assessing distribution of drugs following local application, and animal models of glaucoma.
Please join your colleagues at this year’s Fall meeting; it will be a stimulating and worthwhile experience!

WE NEED YOUR HELP IN OBTAINING ESSENTIAL CORPORATE SUPPORT
Since the MRC/SOT is a non-profit organization with a limited budget, we find it necessary to seek support for our activities from regional businesses and corporations with an interest in toxicology and teratology Registration fees alone cannot sustain the excellent scientific programs provided by the chapter without becoming prohibitive We need corporate support to offer the quality educational programs that are so important for professional growth in our field While many companies have often donated $1,000 or more, any contribution would be highly appreciated! Should you choose to do so, a check (made out to MRC/SOT) can be sent to the address for meeting registration indicated above Contributions are accepted at any time during the year On behalf of the MRC/SOT Executive Council, I thank you for your interest and support!
Linda Tam
Treasurer of the MRC-SOT
Trang 7SAVE THE DATE FOR THE MRC/SOT SPRING MEETING!

Chapter newsletters, information pertaining to membership and MRC/SOT awards, and nomination/application forms may be viewed or printed from our website:
www.toxicology.org/memberservices/regionalchapter/midwest/
Make sure to UPDATE YOUR OLD BOOKMARKS, as the address has changed
slightly The websites for all regional chapters may be accessed through the “Regional Chapters” link at the national SOT web page (www.toxicology.org)
Trang 8PLEASE SUPPORT THE MRC/SOT WITH YOUR MEMBERSHIP!
Not an MRC/SOT member yet? Consider joining today!
The MRC/SOT is one of the largest regional chapters of the national Society of Toxicology, and we're still growing Our large membership allows us the opportunity to deliver high quality, relatively inexpensive, local scientific meetings Annual membership dues are still only $25, and one obvious advantage of membership is reduced meeting registration fees More importantly MRC/SOT membership offers invaluable opportunities to meet and interact with other area toxicology professionals Membership application forms may be downloaded from our web page
HELP US ATTRACT NEW MEMBERS!
Keeping membership at the level that we are at requires a group effort Our Membership committee works hard to attract new members, but you can help by encouraging your colleagues to join as well Please take the time to copy the membership application and circulate it to colleagues whom you think would benefit from MRC/SOT membership
EXISTING MEMBERS - REMEMBER TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP!
For those of you who are already members, please renew promptly after receiving the renewal instructions; email renewal notifications will be arriving from national SOT soon National SOT members can simultaneously renew their MRC/SOT membership
by simply checking an additional box on their renewal form and including their MRC/SOT dues with their national dues payment Membership can be renewed at any time by logging in to the national SOT website Credit cards are accepted on the website!
Any questions regarding MRC/SOT membership may be directed to the Membership Committee chair, Bill Johnson [wjohnson@iitri.org]
KEEP IN TOUCH WITH THE MRC/SOT
Please make sure that you update your contact information if applicable Information updates may be performed through the national SOT website (www.toxicology.org) or
by contacting the Membership Committee chair, Bill Johnson (see contact information above) Remember, mail is only forwarded for a limited amount of time, so don’t miss out on anything!
We will miss our friends and colleagues who will be relocating If you are planning to relocate, and would like to keep in touch with current MRC activities, consider keeping your MRC membership It is not a requirement to live or work in the MRC area All you need to do is keep your contact information up-to-date, and we will continue to send you newsletters and meeting information as they are published

CONSIDER PARTICIPATING IN THE MRC/SOT COMMITTEES
While the MRC/SOT elected executive committee officers are highly involved within the various standing committees, opportunities exist for MRC/SOT members to get involved For more information on how you can get involved, contact the appropriate committee chair (see executive committee listing at the back of the newsletter)
Program Committee: Would you like to see a particular topic presented at an MRC/SOT
meeting? Do you know speakers that would be interested in presenting at a meeting? Consider working with the Program Committee to help maintain the high quality of scientific programs that the MRC/SOT has provided you through the years.
Awards Committee: We have described the various MRC/SOT awards above We generally
receive many high-quality applications for each of the awards every year, making the decision
an enjoyable challenge You can assist in the review of applications and/or judging student posters at the Spring meeting This committee also works to identify new ways to promote or improve the MRC/SOT awards.
Trang 10We also have opportunities for members to participate on the Membership, Nominations, Audit, and Communications committees Contact the respective committee chair for more information.
THE STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Greetings! My name is Tisha King Heiden and I have been chosen
as the new Student Advisory Committee (SAC) representative for
the MRC/SOT Previously, Christina Wilson (Purdue University)
served as the SAC representative We would like to thank
Christina for her continued commitment to the MRC/SOT and wish
her luck with her future endeavors as the SAC chair for national
SOT As an ad hoc committee of the national Society of
Toxicology, the SAC was created to serve as a student liaison
between the regional and national SOT chapters in order to
encourage student involvement in SOT If you are a student and
have an active interest in toxicology, we encourage you to attend
the next MRC/SOT meeting on October 29, 2004 at Covance
Laboratories in Madison, WI Even though you do not need to be a
member of the Midwest Regional Chapter to attend the meeting or
present a poster, there are several benefits to becoming a student
member Student members have access to several services
provided by the MRC/SOT, are eligible for student travel awards
such as the Victor A Drill Award for best poster presentation and
the Young Investigator Award for the most innovative research.
You also benefit from networking with other scientists and
potential employers at the regional meetings Besides, membership
dues are only $10! To become a member, download and fill out an
application form from our website Please feel free to email me
with any questions.
Hope to see you October 29th!
