scheduled for Friday, October 29, 2004:

“Ocular Toxicology Advancements – Way Beyond Getting the Red Out”

A common perception exists that a major arm of toxicology is still devoted to testing rabbits in primary ocular irritation studies – not so Advancements in ocular surgery and novel means of introducing ocular therapeutic agents locally to their site of action have spurred interest and the need for developing animal models of ocular disease, as well as techniques for determining whether such interventions are safe and effective for patients at risk for developing or already suffering visual impairment from chronic disease.

It is with great pleasure that we extend an invitation for you to join us for the upcoming Fall meeting of the Midwest Regional Chapter of the Society of Toxicology This meeting provides an opportunity to learn firsthand how ocular toxicology has advanced “Way Beyond Getting the Red Out” Speakers will address general ocular toxicology, ocular pathology, electrophysiological assessments of ocular function, techniques for assessing distribution of drugs following local application, and animal models of glaucoma.

**MRC/SOT AWARDS**

MRC/SOT is proud to recognize the efforts of toxicologists who work and study in the Midwest There are three annual awards presented that the MRC/SOT uses to highlight their achievements:

Kenneth P DuBois Award (1982-present)

Presented at the MRC/SOT Spring meeting to an outstanding toxicologist from the Midwest region.

Nominations due March 1, 2005.

Victor A Drill Award (1989-present)

Presented at the Spring meeting to the student who presents the best poster The winner receives a paid trip (expenses up to $1500) to the following year’s national SOT meeting.

Abstracts due May 1, 2005.

Young Investigator Award (2003-present)

Presented to the student who submits the best research proposal prior to the MRC/SOT Spring meeting The winner receives $1500 to put towards their proposed research project and presents their results at the following year’s MRC/SOT Spring meeting.

Proposals due April 5, 2005.

CONSIDER PARTICIPATING IN THE MRC/SOT COMMITTEES

While the MRC/SOT elected executive committee officers are highly involved within the various standing committees, opportunities exist for MRC/SOT members to get involved For more information on how you can get involved, contact the appropriate committee chair (see executive committee listing at the back of the newsletter)

Program Committee: Would you like to see a particular topic presented at an MRC/SOT

meeting? Do you know speakers that would be interested in presenting at a meeting? Consider working with the Program Committee to help maintain the high quality of scientific programs that the MRC/SOT has provided you through the years.

Awards Committee: We have described the various MRC/SOT awards above We generally

receive many high-quality applications for each of the awards every year, making the decision

an enjoyable challenge You can assist in the review of applications and/or judging student posters at the Spring meeting This committee also works to identify new ways to promote or improve the MRC/SOT awards.

We also have opportunities for members to participate on the Membership, Nominations, Audit, and Communications committees Contact the respective committee chair for more information.

THE STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Greetings! My name is Tisha King Heiden and I have been chosen

as the new Student Advisory Committee (SAC) representative for

the MRC/SOT Previously, Christina Wilson (Purdue University)

served as the SAC representative We would like to thank

Christina for her continued commitment to the MRC/SOT and wish

her luck with her future endeavors as the SAC chair for national

SOT As an ad hoc committee of the national Society of

Toxicology, the SAC was created to serve as a student liaison

between the regional and national SOT chapters in order to

encourage student involvement in SOT If you are a student and

have an active interest in toxicology, we encourage you to attend

the next MRC/SOT meeting on October 29, 2004 at Covance

Laboratories in Madison, WI Even though you do not need to be a

member of the Midwest Regional Chapter to attend the meeting or

present a poster, there are several benefits to becoming a student

member Student members have access to several services

provided by the MRC/SOT, are eligible for student travel awards

such as the Victor A Drill Award for best poster presentation and

the Young Investigator Award for the most innovative research.

You also benefit from networking with other scientists and

potential employers at the regional meetings Besides, membership

dues are only $10! To become a member, download and fill out an
