Master of Science with a Major in Statistics (3875, MSU code)

The goal of the master's degree programs in Statistics is to provide students with a sound foundation in probability, mathematical statistics, and statistical methodology The degree may be earned under either Plan A (with thesis) or Plan B (without thesis) Almost all students choose Plan B To distinguish this degree from the degree in Applied Statistics, we refer to it as the "regular MS degree"

II DEADLINE

The Department of Statistics and Probability will begin accepting graduate applications for Fall 2016 on September 15, 2015.

The application for admission, application fee, and all required supporting

documents should be received no later than February 1, 2016

For full consideration of fellowship opportunities, applications should be received

III.ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

U.S DEGREE EQUIVALENCY

Admission to a program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree requires completion

of a level of education comparable to a four-year U.S bachelor’s degree High

Scholastic standing and suitable preparation for the intended field of study are also considered Normally, Michigan State University does not accept three-year

bachelor’s degrees, diplomas or certificates as comparable to a four-year U.S

bachelor’s degree

The minimal TOEFL scores required for regular admission are:

Reading 19; Listening 19, Speaking 19, Writing 22 Plus 1 more point on any of these topics to make a total of 80 points

A good background in calculus and linear algebra at the senior undergraduate level is required for admission At least one statistics and probability course at the post-calculus level (such as our STT 441-442 courses) is required

What if my TOEFL score is below the required score of 80 or if any of the

Not normally There is only a slight chance that you could be admitted provisionally if your scores are only very slightly lower than any of the above

What score do you require on the GRE?

We use your GRE score for comparison with other candidates A minimum score is not required

I see that you require a calculus based probability and statistics class before

admission (such as equivalent to STT 441 at MSU) I am wondering if I can take this course after receiving admission to your program.

During the application process, applicants submit certified copies (sealed and stamped

by institutions) of all post-secondary transcripts, graduation certificates and degrees directly to the MSU Department to which they are applying MSU requires these documents in the original language (Chinese) as well as an official English

translation Effective Spring 2015, Michigan State University will require all

Financial Proof

AFFIDAVIT OF SUPPORT FOR GRADUATE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Note: A Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 Form) will not be issued until sufficient financial support is verified by MSU and the Affidavit of Support for Graduate International Students is completed

REQUIREMENTS FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-2017:

For master's students without a graduate assistantship who bring no dependents, financial proof is required for U.S $40,572.00

For doctoral students without a graduate assistantship who bring no dependents, financial proof is required for U.S $32,653.00

Masters and Doctoral students, if your assistantship stipend is less than U.S

$14,740.00, you will need to show financial proof of at least the difference between U.S $14,740.00 and your assistantship stipend You will be responsible for any portion of living expenses not covered by your assistantship stipend

If you plan to attend summer school, proof is required for an additional U.S

$14,912.00 for tuition and fees, books, and miscellaneous expenses

We do not usually support MS students, however, financial support may be considered

if the student is admitted to the Phd program but doing required MS courses their first
