This course has been offered for many years as MLAN 150 Given that the course has had steady enrollments, the Department feels it is time to offer it under its proper name This will make the course more visible and eventually increase enrollments.

Students learn to understand, speak, read, and write in Japanese and gain an understanding of Japanese life and character Language laboratory is required.

COURSE GOALS/OBJECTIVES:
Upon completing Elementary Japanese I (MLAN 150-01) If you study, do all the assignments and faithfully attend class, you the student will be able to read and write Japanese kana, both hiragana and katakana, understand native Japanese speakers when they talk about themselves, their friends, their activities, interests, daily routines, weather, jobs, classes, future and past activities You will also be able to introduce yourself, talk about the above topics using phrases and sentences, and read and write about the same topics using hiragana and katakana
POLICIES
Class work: Any work that you are assigned to do in class and is explicitly referred to as class
work All class work is due on the date indicated, usually at the end of that class, and will not be accepted after that date
Attendance: If you need to miss a class please write me an e-mail ahead of time with a brief
explanation of the situation If you are missing class because of some event like a funeral, wedding, court appearance, doctor’s appointment etc please bring in proof that you actually attended that appointment, as soon as possible after the day of the class you missed
If something unexpected comes up and you must miss class because you got sick, in an accident, etc please bring in any document to prove this happened on the date that you missed class If you were sick and were afraid that you may have caught a contagious disease like H1N1, please miss class and write me an e-mail as soon as possible after the class you missed
Participation is graded as follows:
-Students who frequently volunteer to answer questions, and actively participate in the class with out any teacher prompting will receive a grade in the A range for participation Those students who participate as described above and answer the questions correctly more often than not will earn a grade in the high A range for participation
-Students who only participate when asked, but still answer the question correctly more often than not will earn a participation grade in the B range
Trang 6-Students who only participate when asked, and answer the questions correctly less than fifty percent of the time will earn a participation grade in the low B range
-Students who only participate when asked, and then only do so reluctantly but answer the questions correctly more often than not earn a participation grade in the high C range
-Students who only participate when asked, and then only do so reluctantly, and answer the questions correctly less than 50% of the time will earn a participation grade in the low C range -Students who refuse to participate in class more often than not will receive a participation grade
in the D range
-Students who refuse to participate in class ever will get an F for a participation grade
Homework:
There will be a lot of HW assigned for you to do on your own From time to time I may choose
to collect and grade or go over previously assigned HW in class I will not tell you ahead of time which HW I will collect Therefore it is up to you to do all HW when it is assigned
For all HW please be sure to write the date when the HW was assigned and the topic at the top of the page, as well as the page number and exercise number before each exercise (as appropriate)
If the answer of a question requires you to fill in a part of the sentence, please write the entire sentence
HW grades will be determined as follows:
Completion: Questions answered/Total number of questions assigned
Accuracy: Correct answers/Total number of questions completed
Quizzes:
There will be no make-ups of quizzes However if a student wants to increase their grade on a specific quiz, then they may make corrections of all the wrong answers on that quiz and receive seventy percent of the point value of all corrected answers that are completed correctly added to the grade they received for that quiz they did in class All corrected quizzes must be handed in
no later than one week before an exam unless that quiz was given later than one week before an exam
Group Projects:
Students will design and record conversations on a given topic They will work in pairs and record their conversation on Audacity, a free program available on the web The instructor will give out written instructions on how to download, use this program, and send an MP3 file of their conversation to the instructor
Song:
Students will be given a choice from a list several songs, and provided with lyrics and audio, to memorize and sing to the class ‘karaoke’ style
Final Conversation:
Trang 7Students will be given instructions on how to prepare for a conversation with their instructor completely in Japanese The instructor will make appointments with and meet students in groups
of two to have this conversation Students will be graded on the ability to understand and engage
in a conversation about topics we have studied this semester
