III.ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

English proficiency

Applicants whose native language is not English must also submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

TOEFL iBT: 70

IELTS: 6.0

Students who have not taken a TOEFL, ELTS or PTE or have not achieved the required score may take the VCU English Language Placement exam on arrival

Please note that students who do not achieve the required level of proficiency will be required to take English courses prior to enrollment in the academic program at an additional expense

Standardized Test – SAT / ACT / SAT Subject

Freshman applicants (high school graduates and GED holders) under the age of

22 must submit SAT or ACT scores and, if applicable, an official copy of their GED scores Electronic submission is recommended.

Score Optional Review

Freshman applicants with a minimum high school GPA of 3.3 may request that their application be reviewed without submitting standardized test scores (ACT/SAT). To be considered for admission to the university without submitting test scores, indicate that option on the “questions” section of Common Application. Questions about the test optional review can be directed

Required units

A minimum of 20 units is required for admission to programs on the Monroe Park Campus Competitive applicants should present a minimum of:

4 units of English

3 units of mathematics (including algebra I and either geometry or algebra II)

3 units of history, social studies or government

3 units of science (at least one laboratory)

3 units of one foreign language or 2 units of two foreign languages are strongly recommended

Official high school transcript

ART HISTORY BA

Prospective students who have studied outside of the U.S must provide an official course-by-course external credential evaluation as a required part of the admission process This report should be sealed and unopened, and sent directly to the Office of Admissions.

All official transcripts and relevant credentials (e.g., diplomas and marksheets) will be required if admitted All external credential evaluations should be no older than two years as of the official date received by the Office of Admissions

Once credentials and/or credential evaluations are sent to VCU, they will not be returned to the prospective student or sent to a third party

Letter of recommendation

VCUarts applicants are required to have one reference submitted by their recommender of choice Choose the person best qualified to assess your ability to be successful at VCUarts You will be prompted to enter your recommender’s email address on the Common Application You may only submit one recommender via the Common App The system will then prompt your recommender to submit a letter of recommendation online Be sure to notify your recommenders that you will list them

Financial certification

The applicant must provide proof of adequate funds to live and study full time at VCU by submitting an I-20 DS-2019 Request Form accompanied by an original bank verification letter

The U.S government requires this certification before VCU can issue the

appropriate U.S government forms necessary for obtaining a visa at a U.S embassy or consulate The immigration officials at the U.S port of entry also may request it

You are required to certify that funds are available for the first year of study at VCU In addition, you are expected to provide evidence that all money necessary for your travel, educational expenses and personal needs will be provided for the

entire period of enrollment at VCU.

Because of the rising cost of living in the U.S and variations in individual spending habits, the university cannot predict individual expenses exactly Approximate annual expenses are listed below

The amount that must be certified on your financial statement is shown for a nine-month program of study as a single student For each dependent that may be coming to VCU with you, we require an additional $5,000 per dependent on the bank statement Information on dependents must be clearly indicated on the completed financial statement

Art History applicants are required to submit a research-based writing

a work of art, an historical event, a sociological phenomenon, a literary text, or other humanities topic Your writing sample should

CINEMA BA

Film concept essay

Tell us a story you would like to tell on film: (narrative film concepts only; no documentary; be succinct and specific;

maximum length 200 words ).You will be prompted to submit the film concept essay in the Common Application.

If you have written a screenplay, submit the first 10 pages and title page as an additional writing sample Email your screenplay

Admission Criteria

 Talent and potential as an artist in the field of dance

 Prior training and the ability to demonstrate knowledge of

 Ability to demonstrate musicality and dynamic range

 A healthy, physically conditioned body that is injury free

 Openness to new ideas and the ability to engage in creative problem-solving

About the Audition

VCU Dance welcomes students with varying levels of dance experience to audition for our program The audition consists of a warm-up, a barre, modern center work, an improvisation section, and a short interview The following attire is appropriate: leotards, tights, unitards, bike shorts with leotard or fitted top, leggings, and appropriate supportive undergarments No socks No dangling jewelry Hair secured away from the face Please bring either ballet or jazz shoes The modern center and improvisation are barefoot

Final decision letters will be mailed to all students after their application materials and audition are reviewed

THEATRE BFA, BA

Audition

Once your application has been submitted, a link to schedule your audition will be sent to the email address listed on your

application.

All Theatre VCU applicants, including Performance, Design/Technology, Stage Management, will be interviewed by one

or more faculty members. The purpose of the interview is to allow faculty members to get to know more about the applicant’s interests, commitment and communication skills This interview is an important part of the application process Applicants should be prepared to discuss their recent theatre activities, career goals, as well as personal goals and experiences.

Audition (Performance Applicants)

Prepare two contrasting (one comedic and one dramatic) one-minute monologues from published play scripts. Choose something in an

appropriate age range that does not contain a dialect Secure assistance in the preparation of audition materials

Be sure to bring a resume and headshot to the audition Introduce the audition pieces by only the play’s author, title and the character’s name (background on the scene or plot is not necessary) Maintain a positive attitude, dress professionally yet comfortably and, most importantly – have fun!

We find that the following playwrights are generally overdone or are more difficult for high school seniors to deliver successfully: Mamet, O’Neill, Pinter, Shakespeare, Shepard and Williams

Prepare your production prompt book or portfolio (Stage Management Applicants)

Stage management applicants are required to prepare a production prompt book as part of the interview process If an applicant does not have a prompt book or desires to present additional information, then the applicant should prepare a portfolio The portfolio should consist of (12-16 images) of theatrical work (paperwork, show designs, etc.) Your physical prompt book or portfolio should be brought to the interview.

Submit 12 to 16 works of art that you have created within the past two years that show your promise as theatre student. Present your strongest work and demonstrate your potential to develop a diverse set of skills and ideas We prefer to see a diverse range of 2D and 3D media Drawing from observation is recommended, while copying anime, cartoons, graffiti

or tattoos is discouraged
