We would like to extend an invitation for you to join our Early Childhood Conference this year on March 19, 2016 at Dutchman Creek Middle School in Rock Hill, SC This is the same location as last year where our Conference was well received We are thrilled to host this Conference again this year It is one of our most important commitments to our child care partners to help provide high quality child care training to the teachers of our most critical assets, young children We look forward to your participation in making this year’s conference even better

Our Keynote Speaker this year is Kimberly P Johnson, a wonderful local author and motivational speaker that is filled with energy and passion for being around children She has written a number of children’s books including The Adventures of the Itty Bitty Frog, It’s Time for School a Wonderful Day, as well as books for adults No Fear for Freedom: The Story of the Friendship 9 She has been awarded a number of honors during her career which include being named nationally as the 2005 Head Start Success Story and being invited by President and Mrs George W Bush to read her book at the annual Egg Roll event at the White House More recently she was named as Citizen of the Year for Rock Hill in 2015 and a Heritage Award winner in 2015 from the NAACP You can learn even more about her many accomplishments and books by checking out her website, www.simplycreativeworks.com You will be inspired hearing her speak and we hope you can join us on March 19th

Meet Our Keynote Speaker

Kimberly P Johnson

Children’s Author * Motivational Speaker * Literacy Advocate

Children’s writer, Kimberly P Johnson, was born in Shelby, North Carolina She currently resides in York, South Carolina and was a flight attendant for USAirways for eighteen years She is married to Jeff Johnson, who is retired from the US Air Force after twenty-two years of service In February 2016, Kimberly will defend for her Doctorate Degree in Curriculum, Teaching, and Leadership at Northeastern University, Boston, MA Kimberly has a Master’s Degree in Youth Development and Leadership from Clemson University and degrees in Communications and Early Childhood Education from the University of North Carolina She also completed an advanced Spanish course at UNC-Chapel Hill in order to be better equipped to work and interact with Spanish speaking families

She has written eighteen children’s books including The Adventures of the Itty Bitty Frog and It’s Time for School – A Wonderful Day No Fear for Freedom: The Story of the Friendship 9 is one of her most recent book projects As a proud product of the Head Start program, Kimberly has been the guest speaker for local/national organizations to include Project Read to Me; Smart Start; Alpha Delta Kappa teaching sorority and National Reading associations She also visits schools throughout the United States speaking to children and adults about literacy and writing She conducts staff development workshops on how to motivate children in the classroom She also teaches creative writing to elementary and middle school students Kimberly is an advocate of children’s literacy and gives a portion of all proceeds to children’s literacy organizations

Kimberly has been a passionate advocate for literacy and speaks in numerous forums about the importance of literacy for children She has been recognized with numerous awards including the Gold Heart for her work in literacy; the 2015 Citizen of the Year for Rock Hill, SC for her work in race relations; the NAACP 2015 Heritage Award in York County, South Carolina and received the Key to the City in Columbia, SC in 2015 for her continued work in community efforts

She has co-written and produced two full length musicals, ALL THAT DRAMA – to help middle school and high school students deal with peer pressure and NO FEAR FOR FREEDOM – a story depicting the lives of the Friendship 9 Civil Rights icons Her latest book is non-fiction depicting the story of the 9 gentlemen who walked into McCrory’s Variety Shop in Rock Hill in 1961 and were refused service at the all-white lunch counter These African American men set into motion the “Jail No Bail” premise that helped the Civil Rights movement The book, No Fear for Freedom, the story of the Friendship 9 is the first story about their journey and has been hailed as her best work by far

REGISTRATION FEE: $25.00 per participate (includes 5 certified training hours, continental breakfast, lunch, a souvenir to

remember an incredible training, and professional trainers with years of early childhood experience to share)

PLEASE NOTE: DSS awards the credit hours through The Center for Child Care Career Development They state that anyone

arriving any later than 10 minutes after the training starts can not receive credit Therefore, participants registering after 8:10 am on March 19th will not receive credit for the keynote address They will be able to attend the workshops they have registered for and will receive the 2 hours certified training hours per workshop attended Regardless of late arrival or early departure, the $25.00

1 Learning and Play Go Hand and Hand

Attendees will learn to teach and use a concrete approach of learning through play with young children with and without disabilities There will be activities that are age appropriate to the social, emotional and cognitive developmental levels of 2, 3,

4 and 5 year old children Attendees will learn “hands on approach” in the learning environment that allows children to explore and learn by doing, as well as challenge the child to discover more on his or her own This workshop will have the attendees make activities to take home with them to use with their child/students

2 Lions & Tigers & Bears – The Serious Business of Play

Get ready to move! In this highly interactive workshop, we will explore the numerous developmental benefits – cognitive, social and emotional – of physical activity for children And we’ll bring those concepts to life by going on safari, catching butterflies and fleeing fire-breathing dragons In an age of decreased physical activity and increased obesity among our kids,

we will examine fun, innovative methods for getting boys and girls of ALL abilities up and moving Just watch out for those pesky dragons!

3 Humor & Music

Humor is good for our bodies and our brains! We need to be intent and have purpose in the classroom activities of children One very easy way to help with these activities and create humor is singing silly songs Come join in a fun-filled time of learning silly songs, presenting more humor into a child’s life, and seeing how humor benefits the body and brain

5 Ready, Set, Go!

“Ready, Set, Go!”is a hands-on workshop that focuses on the many layers that are necessary to establish a solid foundation in math The use of manipulatives will be combined with the use of good verbal communication We will establish how to achieve good answers by asking good, developmentally appropriate questions The objective is to attain long term retention of numeric and algebraic concepts

6 Embracing Multiculturalism/Accessing Community Resources

Early childhood educators work with children and families from a range of diverse backgrounds As society becomes

increasingly multiracial, multilingual, and multicultural, so too grows the need for educators’ abilities to support children’s development by instilling in them the tools they need to live together respectfully In this workshop, we will explore diversity, which is not something that can be taught directly To that end, we will uncover skills and tools that are central in creating and sustaining a creative, inclusive, respectful and productive learning environment This workshop will show how to help families access and identify community resources in their community that may offer support and assist families in creating a healthy, safe, and stable environment for their children

7 Kick-Off to Kindergarten: Paving the Way for a Positive Kindergarten Experience

This session we will discuss ideas on how to motivate children and enhance language skills Since storytelling is the foundation for creating great language in children, this workshop will show you how to take ordinary stories and turn them into

extraordinary stories Your body and voice alone can transform any book into an adventure land Children’s Author, Kimberly Johnson will encourage you to use poems and rhythm to help children learn to create brighter language Additionally,
