GroupArotavirusgenotypeG1P[8]isthemostcommonstrainaffectinghumansaroundtheworldover thepastfewdecades.Inthisstudy,weexaminedgeneticvariationintheVP7geneofrotavirusG1P[8] strains,detectedinchildrenoffourmajorcitiesofVietnamduringthreedifferentrotavirusseasons: 1998–1999,2007–2008and2008–2009inordertoassesstheevolutionofthevirusover11years.Fecal samples(n=73)fromchildrenhospitalizedforgastroenteritiscausedbyG1P[8]rotaviruswereanalyzed
byDNAsequencingofgene9encodingtheVP7capsidprotein.PhylogeneticanalysesindicatedthatVP7 geneoftheG1strainsfrom1999containedalineageI,whilerotavirusesfrom2009clusteredinlineage
II.Bothoftheselineageswerefoundco-circulatingin2007–2008season.Whiledifferentsublineages
oflineageIandIIco-circulatedinthe1998–1999and2007–2008seasons,almostallstrainsin2009 belongedtosub-lineageII-C.Intheanalysisusingselected10strains,theVP4genesofthese2VP7-G1 lineageswereallgroupedinF45-likecluster.Deducedaminoacidanalysesindicatedthattherewere thirteenaminoacidsubstitutionsbetweenstrainsoftwolineages.Ofthose,twowerefoundinantigenic regionsAandC,implyingpossibleantigenicdifferencesbetweenthesetwolineages.TheG1P[8]strains
inVietnamareverygeneticallydiverseanddynamic,implyingthefrequentmonitoringonevolutionof rotaviruswillbeimportanttoassessefficacyofrotavirusvaccineinVietnam
