fluently?
Each person has a different reason as to whythey want to speak English fluently or profi-ciently Some many want a better job andothers may want to travel or make newfriends No matter what your reason forlearning to speak English is, you need tocommit to learning English
There is no magic formula or method tomake you learn English in a day You need toset a goal and stick to how you plan to im-prove your English language skills
Since each person has different goals, some
of the methods in this book will not work for
Trang 11you while others will The most importantthing is that you try Not that you try once in
a while to improve your English but that youcommit to 10, 15 or 30 minutes a day to im-proving your English
This book is very practical and highly able You will find many links and ideaswithin that will help you find a way thathelps you improve your English My goal is
action-to help you speak better English by givingyou different tips, tricks, resources andideas
Trang 12Who Am I?
My name is Janet Gerber I run the websiteEnglish Tonight (http://english-to-
learner On my website and in this book, it is
my goal to give you practical advice, tips andactivities that allow you to improve yourEnglish
One thing that challenged me when I wastrying to learn my second language was find-ing information, techniques and activities tohelp me improve I spent a lot of time surfingthe internet and finding resources Therewere so many and at times I would get over-whelmed and not know which way was the
“best way” to learn a new language
Trang 13Chapter 2: Five Limiting Beliefs about Learning
English
Many people have beliefs that limit their guage learning It hinders their learning be-cause they think they can’t learn English be-cause of the belief or thought that they keeptelling themselves over and over again
lan-Below you will read about five common iting beliefs that students that are learning(or want to learn) English have
Trang 14lim-Many people say…
1 I’m too old to learn English.
You are never too old to learn somethingnew It is not true that there is an age limitfor learning a new language It may however,
be more difficult as time goes on but you’re
up for a challenge, right? Instead of making
up excuses of what you aren’t learning, keeptrack of what you know or have learned Youcould try to learn one new word a day, write
a paragraph a day or spend 10 minutes cusing on English If you take small steps tolearning English; you will learn Make a list
fo-of words you know or just learned Don’t getstuck on what you don’t know The morepositive you are about your learning andEnglish language acquisition, the better itwill stick in your mind
Trang 152 I can’t speak English proficiently without traveling.
This is not true I have met a lot (like sands) of people that speak proficient Eng-lish and they have never traveled to any Eng-lish speaking country They speak and un-derstand English You too can learn Englishwithout jetting off to New York, Sydney orLondon Instead of focusing on what youcan’t do right now, focus on what you can.You can learn English where you live if youhave access to a computer and are determ-ined There are plenty of free resources, web-sites and classes on the internet that can helpteach you English
thou-3 I have no one to speak English with.
That’s ok! You can learn to speak English nomatter where you live in the world as long asyou have access to a computer It doesn’tmatter if you live in a remote village in the
Trang 16mountains of India or in the jungle in themiddle of South America You can find otherEnglish learners, just like you online thatwant to learn English and would love topractice speaking with you Many people are
in the same situation as you are There aremany language exchange and languagelearning websites that will connect you tosomeone that wants to practice English orthat wants to learn your native language. With the advances in technology, you can lit-erally learn to speak English without everleaving your home
4 I can’t remember all of the English grammar rules.
No one can remember all the grammar rules.Learning a new language is not about learn-ing rules, it is about learning words that al-low you to communicate with other people.Your grammar does not need to be perfect oreven near perfect to be understood and start
Trang 17communicating Native English speakers donot know all (or often times a lot) of gram-mar rules and make many grammar mis-takes They don’t care I assume that sinceyou are reading this book you want to learn
to speak English fluently Focus on speakingand listening not on being the English gram-mar police
Let’s pretend your grammar isn’t great butyou try speaking anyway You could say ‘Iyesterday banana eat.’ And I as a nativespeaker might say back to you, ‘Oh, youmean… you ate a banana yesterday?’ At thatpoint, if you were paying attention you wouldhave heard what you were trying to say, stated correctly and could rephrase (orresay) what you heard ‘Yes, I ate a bananayesterday.’ Just like that, you were able tocommunicate with someone while makinggrammar mistakes and learn the correct way
to say something… without studying a mar book or rules about past tense You can
Trang 18gram-drastically improve your English grammar
by practicing speaking
Stop wasting your time memorizing verbtenses and grammar rules This will not helpyou become a better English speaker It in-stead will make you insecure about speakingbecause you are thinking about rules instead
of thinking about talking and ing with a new person
communicat-5 I’m afraid to make mistakes.
Mistakes are good; no…EXCELLENT! Themore mistakes you make the faster and moreyou will learn Everyone makes mistakes allthe time You should try not to get hung up
on feeling bad about making mistakes
In my class, I had two very different dents One never said anything and if Iforced her to speak she would look reallynervous and whisper her answer She was
Trang 19stu-obviously terrified that something bad couldhappen from her mistakes.
Another student that was in the sameclassroom talked a lot (sometimes toomuch) His English was far from perfect but
he kept trying He made a lot of mistakes buteveryday kept trying his best and approachedlearning English as a positive and fun thing
He liked that he could communicate and talk
to more people
The difference between these two students isthat one was terrified of making mistakesand the other did his best By trying yourbest and focusing on learning more, you willlearn English If you focus on the negative, like telling yourself that you don’t know how
to say something or that people will laugh atyou if you pronounce something wrong, youare hindering or stopping your learning
Trang 20Going Forward…
Stop making excuses and telling yourself thatyou can’t learn English Learning to speakEnglish is something that is totally possibleand realistic You just need to approach yourlanguage learning in a positive manner andstop your negative thoughts
Trang 21Chapter 3: Your
Mindset
Did you know that your thoughts directly fluence how successfully you learn English? What is your mindset? Mindset is the atti-tude or disposition that you have towardssomething
Trang 22in-Negative Mindset & Fear
Imagine that you are trying to learn English.Every time you go to English class, you don’tparticipate because you think you can’t learn.Every time someone says something to you
in English, you say “I don’t understand.”Every time you think about learning Englishyou get nervous or anxious and think negat-ive thoughts like ‘this is too hard’ or ‘I willnever learn to speak English fluently.’
Many English language learners have this act problem They have so many negativethoughts about learning English that they setthemselves up for failure
ex-When you have a negative mindset or areafraid to do something, you make up
Trang 23constant excuses of why you can’t or won’t
do something You start to convince yourselfthat your excuses are true
If you are fearful, you have unpleasant ings and feel threatened or like you are indanger
feel-When you have a negative mindset or arefearful of something you can have somephysical symptoms as well You may try toavoid going to class, doing your homework
or participating You may get headaches orstomach aches before or when you have tolearn English You many also feel nervous oranxious about specific things
When I was learning my second language in
a classroom, I would physically get a ach ache and try to disappear (it neverworked) when I knew it was going to be myturn to speak or answer a question I wanted
Trang 24stom-to avoid being there all stom-together, but I had nooption since it was a required course.
If you continue to have a negative mindset, you will probably not learn to speak Englishfluently If you continue to be negative andfearful you will continue to fail and you willnot see many advances in your English lan-guage acquisition
Don’t let your negative feelings determinewhat you do in life Think about what youneed to do in English…
Do a presentation
Write a paper
Make a phone call
Have a conversation with your professor
Go to a job interview
Trang 25These don’t seem like such scary tasks, dothey? Ask yourself: What’s the worst thingthat could happen? Why am I fearful? What
is making me scared?
Most likely the worst things that could pen if you do one of these tasks are: youcould get confused and not understand, youcould make mistakes or errors or you couldforget what you are supposed to say
hap-Once you identify what is making younervous or feel negative about learning Eng-lish, you can start to solve your problem
If you make a mistake, the worst thing thatcould happen is that you get laughed at, have
to repeat yourself or lose points on your signment No one will hurt you or belittleyou if you make a mistake when speakingEnglish
Trang 26as-Next time you find yourself feeling negativeabout learning English or doing something
in English, ask yourself: ‘What’s the worstthing that could happen?’ This should helpyou work through your fear and negativemindset
Trang 27Positive Mindset
Being optimistic and looking at the positiveside of things can improve your chances oflearning English fluently
Positive thinking can help you learn to speakEnglish faster When you are positive or ex-cited about something you feel good This ishow you should feel when you are learningand studying English
Trang 28Four Steps to
Helping You Keep a Positive Mindset:
1 Small Successes
Instead of focusing on the big picture of
“learning to speak English fluently” focus onsmall attainable mini habits or goals If youare able to focus on one thing at a time, youwill feel more successful and will be able toaccomplish more
For example: You could focus on learninghow to say five phrases about what you didyesterday This way, once you memorize fivephrases you will feel accomplished; like youactually did something versus trying to learnall the past tense verbs at the same time
Trang 29Don’t focus on what you can’t do or haven’tdone Stay positive and focus on what youhave learned.
2 Do Your Best
Always do your best Try not to compareyour language speaking skills to otherpeople This is hard but if you focus on doingyour best and speaking as much English asyou can, you will learn faster
If you focus on others, you will have troublefocusing on your goals You will always becomparing your English to someone elsewhich is not very productive It’s ok to makemistakes but know that you did the best youcould If you think that you can’t do it or that
it is too hard, it will be more difficult toachieve your goals
3 Try Your Hardest
Trang 30Trying you hardest will help you learn lish quicker It is not always easy to try yourhardest, sometimes you are tired, or haveother things on your mind but you need tofocus on what you are doing in the moment.
Eng-By focusing on one thing at a time and giving
it 100 percent, you will feel better and seeyour results quicker
That means if you decide that you are going
to listen to 10 minutes of English speaking aday, you need to stop everything else forthose 10 minutes Turn off your phone, find aquiet place without distractions and try yourhardest for 10 minutes to focus on improvingyou English listening skills
If you let things distract you, you will not beable to concentrate and try your hardest tolearn If you cannot try your hardest becauseyou are distracted, you will not see the res-ults you want to see
Trang 314 Be positive
Being positive is easier for some people thanfor others Smile, think positive thoughts, think how it will feel to speak fluent English, think about meeting and achieving you Eng-lish language goals The more positive youroutlook and thoughts are about learning andpracticing English, the better you will feel
Trang 32Chapter 4: Goals
It is estimated that more than 2 billionpeople are trying to learn English worldwideand you are one of them The problem is thatmost will not succeed to become fluent inEnglish because they do not set goals
You want to be successful, right? Saying youwant to speak English fluently is not goodenough This is a very broad statement. When you say something like, ‘I want tolearn English’ it is very hard to measure ifyou are successful or not
In order to learn English fluently and cessfully, you need to set specific goals re-lated to your language learning
suc-Think about what your end goal is…
Trang 33Do you want to travel to the United States orUK?
Do you want to get a job where you speakEnglish every day?
Do you want to pass the IELTS, TOEIC orTOEFL exam?
Do you want to make English speakingfriends?
Before you set a goal, you need to decide onone final goal that you would like to achieve
Trang 34Example Goals:
Learn English so I can get a job at a hotel.Travel around the United States for onemonth
Pass the IELTS exam the first time I take it.Now, these goals are okay but they need to
be more specific
By creating a S.M.A.R.T., goal you will beable to create a specific goal that in turn willgive you the steps you need to achieve it.S.M.A.R.T goal stands for:
Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant
and Time-Bound
Trang 35Specific goals help you answer: who, what,
where, when and why?
Who will meet the goal?
What is your goal?
What do you need to do to meet the goal? When will you meet your goal by?
Where/How will you meet this goal?
What resources do you need?
Why is this in an important goal?
Which actions will you take to meet the goal?
It is important to set a date to know whenyou need to complete your goal by This willhelp you create a plan or timeline
Trang 36Measurable goals are concrete and specific.
You will be able to measure your actions andknow if you successfully met your goal
Attainable goals will be something that you
can physically or mentally do within the timerestraints It should be a goal that isachievable
Relevant goals help you evaluate if they are
specific to what you want to achieve
Time-Bound goals have an end or finish
date You will know if you met your goal bythe specific date that you set
