The first item of battle insignia to be adopted b)

the Briti h Arm) in the eond World War were the

divisional sign painted on the vehi Ics of the Briti h

Expeditionary Force in late 1939 Ofthe '4 infantry

division "hich comprised the BEF in the late

pringof 1940, all had existed in the Creat War, and

i~ in that connic! • 'ow, in 1939/40, all were

ordered to ad pt new si~s. Of these only four bore

faint imilaritics to the former sign: the white

diamond ofthe 42nd, the diam nd shape ofthe 48th

and the t ndrew, cross ofthe 52nd Divi ions like

the 51st Highland, who pleaded to keep their

traditional igns, were firmly ordered to choose

another in the intere>ts ofsccurity The 51St chose a

determined to revert to their belo,ed 'liD' • n

as an opportunity permined

The adoption of divisional ign for transport
