Trang 2There are two types of barcode readers that may be fitted to the machine:
• Remote Barcode Reader
• Handheld Barcode Reader1D or one dimensional barcodes are the most common barcodes consisting of
a single row of different width bars
2D or two dimensional barcodes consist of square modules constructed in a matrix that may be square or rectangular
NOTE There are many different formats of barcodes: Data matrix, Aztec, QR, PDF

Trang 3OVERVIEW - BARCODE READER
Remote Barcode
Reader The remote barcode reader is located on the input conveyor to the printer and reads the barcode of the incoming product It also provides information to the
Verification and Traceability software option
Figure 29-1 Remote Barcode Reader Hardware
The system comprises a mounting stand, the reader, a suitable barcode on the product (not shown), an in-line trigger sensor and a set of configuration cards The stand is mounted onto a customer’s input conveyor The configuration cards are used to aid the barcode reader set up and calibration The sensor is attached forward of the reader using a Velcro fastener
During the board/product transfer cycle, with the remote barcode option enabled, the trigger sensor detects the board on the conveyor; it triggers the remote barcode reader to read the barcode, before the board is passed into the printer
Handheld Barcode
Reader The primary function of the handheld barcode reader is to scan consumables and user information for the Verification and Traceability software The
consumables scanned include:
• Screen
• Print Material
• Solvent
• Cleaner PaperThe handheld barcode reader may also be used to scan the first board of a batch that is to be checked by the remote barcode reader during a print run.Different types of handheld barcode readers may be used, however, DEK currently only supply one option

Trang 4OVERVIEW - VERIFICATION AND TRACEABILITY
Introduction Verification and traceability is a software tool that validates (verification) certain
items before printing and records data (traceability) to a file
Purpose Verification ensures that the product and the consumable items used in the print
process match the information stored in the product file
At the end of each print cycle, verification information is written to the traceability file This information may be used to trace particular batches of a product run and identify all the consumables used for that batch
consumables fitted to the machine This is achieved by either scanning the barcode using the handheld barcode reader or entering the identity information using the keyboard
During the print run, the product is automatically scanned by the remote barcode reader located on the input conveyor; the data scanned in, is stored for traceability with the print data Each board is checked against the information stored in the product file
When a consumable item is replaced on the machine, the operator is requested
to verify the item by entering the identity of the item This is checked against the information stored in the product file before the print cycle can continue

of length 14 starting at character 4 would be:
The start character is the numerical position in the barcode from which to start, ignoring any previous characters
The name length is the amount of characters to be considered, beginning with the start character
In the following example, the barcode is made up of the product type, batch number and date code:
If the batch number was the only part of the barcode that needed to be
considered for verification, the start character would be 7 and the name length would be 2.

Trang 17READER SET UP
11 In the Port Settings menu set the parameters as shown below
12 Select Apply.
13 Select OK.
System Test The system is set up and ready to be tested Testing consists of configuring,
calibrating, checking functionality and finally checking test codes
1 Using Configuration Code Card number one, place it directly under the barcode reader The reader displays a crosshair which provides a target The barcode on the card should be in the middle of the crosshair
2 Move a spare card or similar object over the trigger sensor to cause it to respond
3 The green LED at the bottom of the barcode reader flashes once
4 Remove card one
5 Continue the configuration by placing configuration card number two under the reader with its barcode in the middle of the crosshair Activate the trigger sensor
6 Remove card two
7 Place card four into position; this saves the calibration settings and ends the configuration routine
8 Remove card four
9 Place the customer product (with barcode uppermost) onto the input veyor ready to be read
con-10 Place card three into position; this card sets the automatic calibration routine This can be carried out manually using the EZ button (see detail
Trang 18later) Users should be warned that, when activated, this calibration causes the laser light source to flash on and off in a strobe-like manner for several seconds
11 Remove card three to reveal the customer product beneath The barcode reader calibrates the customer product The reader status LEDs poll continuously while the calibration routine takes place This may take several seconds until the flashing lights cease
NOTE
1 Strobing indicates that calibration is taking place.
2 A green light indicates calibration has been successful.
3 If the calibration settings need to be reset to the default settings use card number five.
4 Cards six and seven are used to turn the EZ button ON or OFF respectively The EZ button in the OFF mode prevents operators from manually resetting the parameters or recalibrating the unit.
12 EZ reader option If the EZ button has not been turned OFF (using card six) Press and hold the EZ button for two seconds This switches the reader on and data is output to the Hyper Terminal
13 The unit is now in calibration mode Place the customer product under the reader beam The unit flashes to indicate that it is calibrating; after a few seconds the green LED should come on and calibration stops If you want
to stop calibration use card number four
15 Card eight has the three DEK Test barcodes printed on it Place the card in

Trang 19READER SET UP
position, with one of the three test barcodes centred in the target crosshair When triggered, the data is read into the Hyper Terminal and each time it is triggered the text below the targeted barcode is displayed on the terminal
16 Repeat this test for the other barcodes; check that the hyper terminal updates with the correct text when the barcode read is triggered
17 Place the product on the input conveyor (with its barcode facing up), near the trigger sensor
18 In one action, move the leading edge of the product over the trigger sensor and onward to rest with its barcode below the barcode reader (centred in the crosshair) This action should trigger a barcode read, a successful read is determined by the correct product identity being displayed on the hyper terminal
19 Close the hyper terminal software
20 In the Windows toolbar, select Start.
21 Select the DEK software from the menu.
22 Press the System button.
Complex Codes For reading complex codes or where a barcode read is particularly problematic,
it may be necessary to position the reader head with better precision
The reader angle from the perpendicular must be approximately
30 degrees and, parallel
to the plane of the
