Trang 1Introduction
Union Savings Bank in Danbury, Connecticut, is a
community bank dedicated to the growth and progress of
its customers across Connecticut. Established in 1866, the
bank is rooted in the traditions of providing the best service
to customers and giving back to the community. Not only
does the bank encourage its staff members to volunteer, it
also donated $1.6 million in 2011 to charities within its
footprint.
Union Savings Bank currently has 29 branches, 6,500
business DDAs and assets of $2.5 billion.
The Challenge
Through the years, Union Savings Bank worked with
different vendors to provide merchant processing services
for their business customers. When the Bank acquired First
National Bank of Litchfield in 2010, the management team
decided to pick best‐in‐breed vendors to coincide with the
merger. “Both banks had different platforms for merchant
processing, so we decided to put together an RFP to help us
make the best choice,” said Jim Rusiecki, Senior Vice
President of Corporate Services at Union Savings Bank. “We
were very deliberate with the process and wanted it to be
fair. We were looking for a true business partner who could help us maximize our income potential as well as provide solid technology and customer service.”
As the RFP responses came in, Rusiecki put together a committee to review the responses and ultimately pick the merchant services vendor. “In the end, we decided to contract with Elavon and Elavon Financial Institution Solutions,” said Rusiecki. “We had a history with the company and a good rapport with Diana Barhorst, Relationship Manager. Because we had worked with Elavon
in the past, we were already familiar with their system and knew they would provide great service to the bank and to our customers. One other critical point: Elavon was big enough that the bank would not have to be involved in every detail. The sales representative could answer comprehensive customer questions.”
Elavon’s Merchant Services program offers front‐end authorizations, back‐end settlement and all customer support functions, providing clients with one source for all
of their payment processing needs. In addition, value‐added processing services like corporate purchasing cards, PIN‐ based debit, fleet cards, electronic gift cards and electronic check conversion are all available.
Union Savings Bank implemented the Elavon Merchant Services program in June, 2011. “The transition was smooth and seamless to our branches and business partners,” said Rusiecki. “Like the implementation, the training was very professional.”
Trang 2Rusiecki’s Corporate Services team worked with the Bank’s
retail banking and marketing department to get the word
out about the new offering. “We’ve got an expert at the
bank who helps us with our marketing campaigns, and
we’ve taken advantage of various e‐marketing
opportunities,” said Rusiecki. “With electronic campaigns,
we can prepare all the messaging and everything within a
few days and make sure we target the right people. Our
approach has been more consultative than sales‐focused,
and each time we do a campaign we get back six to eight
qualified leads. All referrals come to the bank first so we
can track them and make sure the customer is contacted
quickly.”
Along with e‐marketing campaigns, Union Savings Bank has
also had internal promotions to help raise awareness of
their merchant services options. Gift cards provide
employees with more incentive to understand and sell the
solution. “We’re consciously trying to find the right fit with
the number and type of promotions so we don’t overwhelm
the branches,” said Rusiecki. “And we’re working closely
with our commercial lenders so they can be completely
comfortable with this product and refer customers.”
Sales and Marketing Support
Elavon provides:
• A suite of online tools to help you manage
your portfolio, track merchant applications
and view residual reports

materials to support your promotions
Elavon gives financial institution partners the power to meet all their customers’ payment processing needs Elavon provides
management and customer service while assuming risk and full compliance responsibility for the program
From June through December, 2011, Union Savings Bank reached $10 million in new business sales through the merchant services program. “Our sales goals focused on opening a certain number of accounts as well as driving residual income,” said Rusiecki. “We were lucky to open some larger accounts last year, which drove the sales figures up.”
Beyond increased sales, the bank measures the success of this program by personally reviewing customer satisfaction.
“We contact our customers periodically,” said Rusiecki.
“Maybe it’s not specifically to ask about merchant processing, but we generally bring it up. There are no instances of complaints. Everyone I have heard from is happy – especially with the 24/7 service. All Elavon representatives are careful to address concerns right away before they become problems.”
Rusiecki has gathered a lot of positive feedback. “Pricing flexibility is one benefit our customers really appreciate,”
he said. “It helps them to compete in a challenging market. They also like some of the other perks we can offer, such as gift cards. Now smaller businesses can offer gift cards that help build customer loyalty.”
With access to new payment processing solutions, Union Savings Bank customers can solve real world problems. “I love to hear stories about how we make a difference for our customers,” said Rusiecki. “For example, we have a home heating oil distributer customer who was taking quite a few checks that would then bounce. We worked with the owner
to show him it was worth it to accept debit or credit cards
so he didn’t have to chase people down for payment. We set up wireless terminals so customers could pay on delivery.”

whole relationship with a corporate customer. “We want to
be a full‐service provider for customers,” said Rusiecki.
“Merchant processing is another tool that helps to round
out our product mix and contribute to the bottom line.
Customers see this as a fee for a service they need,
something that helps their bottom line as well, not just a
penalty fee.”
The Next Steps
What does the future hold for the Elavon Merchant
Services program at Union Savings Bank? “We have
aggressive bank goals,” said Rusiecki. “We want to grow our
portfolio by 15% over the next 12 months and drive
residual income. We can achieve this in part by continuing
with our e‐marketing program. We’ve had good success but
haven’t tapped our full deposit base. I look forward to
working with Elavon on new ideas. We have gotten such
great customer service from the company and we have an
excellent relationship. It’s a true business partnership.”
