CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1.Rationale

So far, I've been studying at Duy Tan University for about four years,and I've gained a wealth of new knowledge in a variety of fields Whencommunicating and approaching economies and cultures of differentcountries around the world, I believe translation is critical Especially now,when a series of sports events are widely organized around the world,attracting hundreds of millions of live and online views, sports movement has

a significant impact on people's lives

This book is organized into 12 chapters that detail the process of formingthe world's largest football team, such as Barcelona, which is coached by PepGuardiola The book covers the London game at Wembley to the second leg

of the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea The book demonstrateshow football has influenced young athletes from all over the world, regardless

of their background Furthermore, it demonstrates the global football passion

of people not only from Catalonia but from all over the world Furthermore,

it demonstrates people all over the world's love for FC Barcelona, who are notonly from Catalonia but also from all over the world

I decided to choose the second of all twelve chapters of the book totranslate because of the following reasons:

+ Firstly, this second chapter is perhaps the core point that encapsulatesthe entire content of the book which tells the whole journey to become one ofthe most talented players of Argentine football and of the world Messi is aboy living in a poor countryside carrying a disease that is retarded compared

to his peers after extraordinary efforts in training and being sponsored by thepresident of Barcelona for treatment Messi was 1m69 tall compared to 1m4

at a young age

+ Secondly, I've been a fan of FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi since Iwas a child I'd like to learn more about my idol's life and what makes a worldfootball genius and a club great to this day.

I believe that the sport topic will attract people's interest which providespeople with a broader understanding of sport as well as useful informationabout it.I hope that I will finish this thesis to the best of my ability and that itwill benefit everyone, not just myself

1.2 Aims and objectives

1.2.1 Aims

I learned a lot about the translation process and the skills required tocomplete an excellent translation at Duy Tan University in general and theEnglish Department in particular I will incorporate what I have learned intothis thesis thanks to all of the department's teachers and my own effortsduring my time at the school

My graduation goals at:

Understanding translation methods and skills to the translation process

In-depthing vocabulary and analysis of difficult structures

Learning about the difficulties and challenges that translators face during the translation process

CHAPTER 2: THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

2.1 Translation Theory

2.1.1 Definitions

Translation may be set up and is performed between any pair oflanguages or dialects “related” or “unrelated” and with any kind of spatial,temporal, social and other relationship between them Translation, as aprocess, is always uni-directional: it is always performed in a given direction,

“FROM” a source language (SL) “INTO” a target on (TL)

In fact, There are many definitions of translation; the definitions aredifferent among experts below are the definitions of translations:

J.C Catford [1] defines translation as “the replacement of textual

material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language” (TL)

Dr Ian Tudor [2] describes translation as “the process of conveying

messages across linguistic and cultural barrier, is an eminently communicative activity, one whose use could well be considered in a wider of teaching situations than may currently be the case”

Peter Newmark [3] defines “translation as a craft consisting if the

attempt to replace a written language by the same message by another language”

Roger T Bell [4] stated that “translation is the replacement of a

representation of a text in one language by a representation of an equivalent text in a second language”

Isadore Pinhhuck [5] stated that “translation is a process of finding a TL

equivalent for an SL utterance”

2.1.2 Types of Categories

Types of categories of translation may be defined in terms of extent,

levels, and ranks of translation

2.1.2.1 Full vs Partial Translation

- In a full translation, the entire text is submitted to the translation

process: that is, every part of the SL text is replaced by TL text material

EX: My brother just bought a new ball.

- In a partial translation, some part or parts of the ST are left

untranslated:

they are simply transferred to and incorporated in the TL text In partialtransaltion, the process of transferring source language lexical items into atarget language text is more complex than appears at first sight, seeming toremain “non-translated”

In “total” translation, all levels of source language text are replaced withtarget language material In “total” translation, source language grammar andlexis are replaced by equivalent target language grammar and lexis Thisreplacement entails the replacement of source language phonology/graphology with target language equivalents

2.1.2.6 Free, Literal, and Word –for-Word Translation

A “free” translation is always unbounded while “word-for-word”translation generally means what it says “Literal” translation lies betweenthese extremes It may start from a “word-for-word” translation, but changes

in conformity with TL grammar (inserting additional words, changingstructures, etc) This may make it a group-group or clause-clause translation

EX: Frendship often ends in love, but love in frendship-never

2.2 Principles and Methods of Translation

2.2.1.2 Form

The order of words and ideas in the translation should match that in

the original as closely as possible This is particularly in the form and order ofwords When in doubt, underline in the original text the words on which themain stress falls In English, emphasis or main stress can be obtained throughinversion of word order and using different structures

EX: No sooner had she finished one project than she started the next.

2.2.1.3 Register

Languages often differ greatly in their levels of formality in a given context To resolve these differences, the translator must distinguish between formal and fixed expression

 All of them have same meaning: “xin lỗi”

2.2.1.4 Source language influence

One of the most frequent criticisms of translation is that "It doesn't

sound natural" This is because the translator's thoughts and choice of wordsare too strongly molded by the original text A good way of shaking off the

SL influence is to set the text aside and translate a few sentences aloud frommemory This will suggest natural patterns of thought in the first language(target language), which may not come to mind when the eyes are fixed onthe SL text

2.2.1.5 Idiom

Idiomatic expressions are notoriously untranslatable These include

similes, metaphors, proverbs, sayings, jargons, slangs, colloquialisms andphrasal verbs If the expressions cannot be directly translated, try any of thefollowing:

- Retain the original expression, with a literal explanation in brackets:

EX: Chuyện bé xé ra to

 A storm in a tea-cup

- Use a close equivalents:

EX: The die is cast

- Use a non-idiomatic or plain prose translation:

EX: Honesty is the best policy

2.2.1.6 Style and Clarity

The translator in general should not change the style of the original.But if the text is sloppily written, or full of tedious repetitions, the translationmay, for the reader’s sake, correct the defects

2.2.2 Methods

2.2.2.1 Word-for-Word Translation

This is often demonstrated as interlinear translation, with The TL

immediately below the SL words The SL word-order is preserved and thewords translated singly by their most common meanings, out of context.Cultural words are translated literally The main use of word-for-wordtranslation is either to understand the mechanics of the source language orconstrue a difficult text as a pre-t ran slat ion process

2.2.2.2 Faithful Translation

A faithful translation attempts to reproduce the precise contextualmeaning of the original within the constraints of the TL grammaticalstructures It “transfers” cultural words and preserves the degree ofgrammatical and lexical “abnormality” in the translation

2.2.2.6 Free Translation

Free translation reproduces the matter without the manner, or the contentwithout the form of the original Usually it is a paraphrase much longer thanthe original, a so-called 'intralingual translation”, often prolix and pretentious,and not translation at all

Idiomatic translation reproduces the 'message' of the original but tends todistort nuances of meaning by preferring colloquialisms and idioms wherethese do not exist in the original

Communicative translation attempts to render the exact contextualmeaning of the original in such a way that both content and language arereadily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership
