This graduation paper is about the Vietnamese translation

of the book “Beautiful World, Where Are You” written by SallyRooney Due to time limitations, I decided to translate fromchapter 1 to chapter 2 of this book The theoreticalbackground, the original version, and the suggestedtranslation Besides, I examined the graduation paper's tough

vocabulary and structures such as phrasal verb, figure of

speech, complex and compound sentences, dummy subjects,and so on to make it easily accessible to those interested inthis topic Additionally, I discovered some solutions toovercome obstacles that caused me tension during thetranslation process through the analyzing process They areall presented at the end of the graduate paper Furthermore,this graduate paper was completed in time

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Rationale

Being English major students at Duy Tan University'sFaculty of English, we usually find and update newinformation regarding how to translate well Besides, we alsosearch news, books, magazines, and other materials inEnglish to translate to develop our skills After seeking manybooks, magazines, and reports, I decided to choose the book

“Beautiful World, Where Are You” in this graduation paperbecause the book brings a very meaningful story aboutfriendship, love, and life Besides, I am quite impressed withthe four characters in the story They are dynamic and theway they behave and interact with each other and with otherpeople is very special Furthermore, I realize that in today'smodern world, people, particularly the young people, areeasily thrown into a state of precariousness and sadness.Therefore, this book might help you find the meaning of life orinspire you when you are feeling down In addition, bychoosing the first two chapters of the book, I hope thatreaders will be able to easily approach this issue and getinteresting knowledge that will make them happy

1.2 Aims and Objectives

The paper is intended to help translators improve someskills such as translation skills, structural analysis skills,vocabulary, and a thorough understanding of translationtheory Besides, the reader gets to know some of the

characters and how they communicate as well as exchange inthe novel thanks to the translation of chapters 1 and 2 fromthe book "Beautiful World, Where Are You." Additionally, afterfinishing this graduate paper, I am able to accomplishobjectives such as expanding my vocabulary, detecting andresolving difficulties in analyzing complex words andstructures, and removing linguistic obstacles for Vietnamesereaders who are interested in this subject.

1.3 Scope of the Study

This graduation paper is about the story “Beautiful World,Where Are You” It is translated from the original version andgiven the analysis of a suggested translation of the text.However, within the scope of the paper and due to timelimitations, this paper only focuses on some first parts of thebook with 4.489 words Besides, the study also discussessome difficult vocabulary and grammar that I came acrosswhile translating

1.3.1 Text Features

The book “Beautiful World, Where Are You” is a work bySally Rooney - the Ireland writer, and it is her third and latestnovel This book belongs to the genre of contemporary fiction.The book revolves around the four characters Alice, Felix,Eileen, and Simon, as well as their ups and downs in life,including their friendship and romance Her book has 368pages This book just includes chapter numbers and nocontent titles The chapters that I choose in the book arechapters 1 and 2 The main content of chapter 1 is about the

meeting of two characters Alice and Felix at the hotel bar andAlice invited Felix to visit her house Chapter 2 talks aboutAlice's emailed letter to Eileen about her thoughts andfeelings about politics, socialism as well as about thesurrounding life

1.3.2 Text Length

As I mentioned above, there are 368 pages in this book.However, due to time limitations, I have just translated fromchapter 1 to chapter 2 with about 4.489 words

1.3.3 Text Organization

This book has 368 pages divided into 30 chapters and thepart I chose belongs to chapters 1 and 2 of the book with thefollowing organization: chapter 1 has 10 pages with 3328words and chapter 2 has 3 pages with 1161 words

This text is from the book “Beautiful World, Where AreYou’’ published in 2021 This book was written by SalleyRooney This book is available on Z-library

1.4 Method of the Study

I have used the qualitative method mainly in mygraduation Here are some steps I took to serve my study

Finding the author and the title of the book I willtranslate

Constructing the translation theory, followed byanalyzing and presenting the illustrative examples

Beginning to translate, research, and analyze difficultvocabulary, special structure based on the theory oftranslation and grammar.

Researching some references on the internet or in books

to have a better understanding of the basics needed toconstruct and analyze the graduation paper precisely andsuccinctly

CHAPTER 2 THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

“Translation is the expression in another language (TL)

of what has been expressed in one language (SL), preserving

semantic and stylistic equivalencies.” (Peter Newmark,1988)

Textual material in one language (SL) is replaced withequivalent textual material in another language (TL) by

translation." (J C Catford, 1965)

The process of delivering messages across linguistic and

cultural barriers is known as translation (Tudor Ian, 1965)

Translation is an act of communication that attempts torelay another act of communication across cultural and

linguistic boundaries (Hatim & Mason,1997)

Translation plays an important role in human life Notonly that, it is also an essential part of many fields such asliterature, poetry, etc By turning the source language into thetarget language, we can easily feel thoughts, opinions andfeelings of the translator through their translation Therefore,translation unintentionally connects cultures to each other aswell as human connection becomes more attached

2.1.2 Types of Translation

There are many types of translation These types ofcategories can aid us in comprehending and distinguishingvarious translation methods We can avoid making mistakeswhen translating if we have a good understanding of thedifferent types of translation

2.1.2.1 Full vs Partial Translation

According to J.C Catford (1965), A Linguistic Theory ofTranslation, there are two categories of translation: full andpartial

(i) Full translation: in the process of translation, every

part of the entire text in the SL is submitted by the equivalent

in the TL

Example:

There has been a dramatic rise in house prices this year

(ii) Partial translation: there are some parts of the SL thatare not translated but only put into the TL

Example:

Birth will decrease in the 21st century

2.1.2.2 Total vs restricted translation

In terms of levels, translation is divided into two types by,J.C Catford (1965) A Linguistic Theory of Translation, totaltranslation and restricted translation

(i) Total translation is defined that all levels of the SL textare replaced by TL material However, actually, there is amisunderstanding here because of the term “totaltranslation” We can’t replace all the levels of the SL to the

TL, though total replacement is involved

Example:

Have you ever been to Nha Trang?

 Bạn đã bao giờ đến Nha Trang chưa ?

(ii) Restricted translation means is the replacement of SLtextual material by equivalent TL one, butonly in one level Maybe it is performed only at thephonological or at the graphological level, or at only one ofthe two levels of grammar and lexis

2.1.2.3 Phonological translation

Catford (1995:23) stated about phonological translation

He stated that in phonological translation, The SL phonology

is substituted by a TL phonology that is equivalent.Replacements are made only when phonological translationcauses grammatical or lexical changes

That means is the phonology Source Language changes

by equivalent Target Language phonology, only done ingrammatical or lexical

Example:

2.2 Principles and Methods of Translation

2.2.1 Principles

During the translation process, it is critical for thetranslator to follow all translation principles Alan Duff (1989)also gave some general principles that are applicable to alltranslations:

2.2.1.1 Meaning

The translation should reflect accurately the meaning ofthe original text Nothing should be arbitrarily added orremoved, though occasionally part of the meaning can betransposed

Example:

He was limp with fatigue

 Anh ta mệt đến độ không đứng lên nổi

2.2.1.2 Form

The ordering of words and ideas in the translation shouldmatch the original as closely as possible This is particularlyimportant in translating legal documents, guarantees,contracts, etc But differences in language structure oftenrequire changes in the form and order of words When indoubt, underline in the original text the words on which themain stress falls

Example:

Not only is she cute but also kind

2.2.1.3 Register

Languages often differ greatly in their levels of formality

in a given context, for example, the business letter Toresolve these differences, the translator must distinguishbetween formal or fixed expressions and personalexpressions, in which the writer or speaker sets the tone

of the following:

a Retain the original word, in inverted commas

b Retain the original expression, with a literal explanation

in brackets

c Use a close equivalent

d Use a non-idiomatic or plain prose translation

The golden rule is: if the idiom does not work in the TL, donot force it into translation

Example: Men make house, women make home

2.2.1.5 Style and Clarity

The translator should not change the style of the original.But if the text is sloppily written, or full of tedious repetitions,the translator may, for the reader's sake, correct the defects

Example: He ate, and drink, and talked, and asked duringthe meal.

of word-for-word translation is either to understand themechanics of the source language or to construct a difficulttext as a pre-translation process

Example:

2.2.2.2 Literal Translation

The SL grammatical constructions are converted to theirnearest TL equivalents but the lexical words are againtranslated singly, out of context As a pre-translation process,this indicates the problems to be solved

Example: I used to be crazy about her

2.2.2.3 Faithful Translation

A faithful translation attempts to reproduce the precisecontextual meaning of the original meaning within theconstraints of the TL grammatical structures It “transfers”cultural words and preserves the degree of grammatical andlexical “abnormality” in the translation It attempts to becompletely faithful to intentions and the text realization of the

Semantic translation differs from faithful translation only

in as far as it must take more account of the aesthetic value

of the SL text, compromising on “meaning” where appropriate

so that no assonance, word-play or repetition jars in finishedversion It does not rely on cultural equivalence and makesvery small concessions to the readership While faithfultranslation is dogmatic, semantic translation is more flexible

Example:

A serene feeling pervaded my soul.

2.2.2.5 Adaptation

This is the “freest” form of translation, used mainly forplays (comedies) and poetry The themes, characters, plotsare usually preserved, the SL culture is converted to TL one,and the text is rewritten

It was the pleading cry of a strong man in distress

2.2.2.7 Idiomatic Translation

Idiomatic translation reproduces the ‘message’ of theoriginal but tends to distort nuances of meaning by preferringcolloquialisms and idioms where these do not exist in theoriginal

2.2.2.8 Communicative Translation

Communicative translation attempts to render the exactcontextual meaning of the original in such a way that bothcontent and language are readily acceptable andcomprehensible to the readership.
