Philip Zimbardo, the renowned social psychologist and founder of theStanford Prison Experiment, investigates the reasons that lead good people to dohorrible things, how moral individuals may be persuaded to act immorally, and whatthis means for the border between good and evil

The Lucifer Effect explores how and why we are all prone to the allure of "thedark side."

Zimbardo narrates the whole narrative of the Stanford Prison Experiment, theseminal research in which a group of college-student volunteers was randomlyseparated into "guards" and "inmates" and then placed in a mimic prison setting, forthe first time and in detail

Zimbardo's work illuminates the psychological causes of such disturbingtransformations, allowing us to better understand a wide range of harrowingphenomena, from corporate malfeasance to organized genocide to how once-honorable American soldiers came to abuse and torture Iraqi detainees at AbuGhraib He substitutes the long-held notion of the "bad apple" with the "badbarrel"—the idea that the social environment and system infect the individual ratherthan the other way around

He claims that we are capable of rejecting evil and that we can even educateourselves to act courageously The Lucifer Effect, like Hannah Arendt's Eichmann

in Jerusalem and Steven Pinker's The Blank Slate, is a frightening, enthralling studythat will revolutionize the way we understand human conduct

I construct the recommended translation based on the theoretical foundationand the original version Furthermore, I learn about the study of several complexvocabulary, such as words with multiple meanings, difficult meanings, slang, anduntranslatable words, idioms and phrases, and advanced structures in the translationprocess, all of which are included in the graduation thesis Furthermore, at the end

of my graduation thesis, I identify several barriers and recommend some solutionsfor students to enhance their translation skills

What makes good people capable of committing bad – even evil – acts? Fewpsychologists are better qualified to answer that question than Philip Zimbardo, apsychology professor who was not only the author of the classic Stanford PrisonExperiment, in which two groups of students played the roles of prisoners andguards in a makeshift jail, to dramatic effect but also an active participant in the trial

of a US serviceman who participated in the violent abuse of Iraqi prisoners in theaftermath of the second Gulf War

The Lucifer Effect, written by Philip Zimbardo, is a detailed examination ofhow decent people may perform terrible deeds Zimbardo utilized his problem-solving abilities to discover the answer to this issue, which is knowledge of twocircumstances To begin, he adds situational elements (circumstances and setting)and he must take precedence over dispositional ones, implying that nice and well-meaning individuals might behave abnormally when placed in unexpected orstressful situations Second, good and evil are interchangeable; they are notopposites Depending on the circumstances, most people may be both angels anddemons

In establishing this conclusion, Zimbardo drew on the work of StanleyMilgram, whose own psychological tests had demonstrated the influence thatauthoritative people may have on influencing the conduct of others

The Lucifer effect illustrates how a scenario may transform otherwise 'good'individuals into perpetrators of immoral or 'evil' actions The name is derived fromthe legendary account of Lucifer, a noble angel who became bad and was exiled as aresult of his acts

What causes decent individuals to conduct harmful – even wicked – acts? This

is the same question I've been looking for for a long time, and, luckily, I came intothe book "the lucifer effect," which lets me know some of the answers based ongenuine research I'm hoping that at the end of this graduation thesis, you'll have abetter understanding of this question This is more than a book; it is a study of the

human mind and condition So that I might get adequate awareness and use it to edit my conduct, attitudes, and manners.

The paper will also show and analyze the difficulties I met when translating,including vocabulary ways to use English grammar and syntactic structures as well

as word words

1.3.1Text Features

“The Lucifer Effect” is written by Philip Zimbardo - renowned socialpsychologist and creator of the "Stanford Prison Experiment Besides, the theme ofthe book is very useful for people who care about psychology

I could wonder how to investigate the mechanisms that cause good people to

do horrible things, how moral individuals can be persuaded to act immorally, andwhat this implies about the boundary between good from evil This book willaddress why it is so based on the experience of students in an experiment thatcannot be more real

1.3.2Text Length

This book includes 16 chapters with 535 pages but the time is limited so Ihave translated only chapter four which is approximately 5000 words in length Thename of chapter 4 is “Monday’s Prisoner Rebellion”

1.4 Method of the Study

To achieve my goal, I applied the method of enumerating, researchingquantitative data, and researching qualitative data to provide difficult vocabularyand structure In particular, I have asked the enthusiastic support from lecturers andfriends to get more necessary information in the implementation process of thisgraduation thesis

CHAPTER 2 THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

2.1 Translation Theory

2.1.1Definition

There are so many definitions of translation by different authors and each ofthem has thought about this field I can look into some definitions of translationgiven by some well-known linguistic experts as follows:

Newmark, P G (2007:19) mentioned that translation is a process oftransferring a message from this language into another language in the way theauthor intended the text

Meanwhile, Tudor, I (1965:5) defined translation as a process of transmittingmessages across linguistic and cultural boundaries

Besides, Catford, J.C (1965:20) stated that the expression of what has beenstated in one language (source language) in another language (target language),while maintaining semantic and stylistic equivalencies was called translation

In short, the act of understanding and attempting to comprehend the meaning

of a text in the source language (SL) and then interpreting it into the target language(TL) is known as translation (TL) The translator is like a medium and a bridge thatcan connect one language, culture, and society with another

2.1.2Types of categories

There are many types of translation These types of categories can help medeeply understand and easily distinguish the ways of translation Understandingtypes of translation thoroughly, I can avoid making mistakes when translating

2.1.2.1 Full vs Partial Translation

Based on the extent, J.C Catford (1965) classifies translation into full andpartial translation

a.Full Translation

In the process of translation, every part of the entire text in the SourceLanguage is submitted by the equivalent in the Target Language

Example:

Snowfall occurs almost every winter

 Sương giá xảy ra hầu như mỗi mùa đông.

In this sentence, all the words are translated

b.Partial Translation

Some parts of the SL are not translated but only put into the TL

Example:

Hủ tiếu là món ăn đường phố phổ biến tại thành phố Đà Nẵng.

 "Hu tieu" is typical street food in Danang city.

In the sentence, there remain the words “Hu tieu” and “Danang” Noequivalence of these words can be found in English because it belongs to thecultural term; therefore, it should be retained when rendered into English

2.1.2.2 Total vs Restricted Translation

In terms of level, J.C Catford (1965) divides translation into total translation and restricted translation

a. Total Translation

Total translation is defined that all levels of the SL text being replaced by TLmaterial However, there is a misunderstanding here because of the term “totaltranslation” I can’t replace all the levels of the SL to the TL, though totalreplacement is involved

b.Restricted Translation

Restricted translation means the replacement of SL textual material byequivalent TL one, but only on one level Maybe it is performed only at thephonological or the graphological level, or at only one of the two levels of grammarand lexis

Example:

“Tía má ơi!”

-> Oh, goodness me!

In this example, the word “tía má” cannot be transferred from Vietnamese into English because it is limited by cultural meaning The word “tía má” is widely

used by the Southern people in Vietnam to address their parents; it can beunderstood that is a/one way of calling dad or mom, with a distinctive feature of aspecific dialect But, in this sentence, “tía má” is not used in the sense of referring

to parents but in its figurative sense to refer to the exclamation

2.1.2.2 Phonological Translation

During the translation process, translators encounter a variety of issues that aredifficult to resolve, like phonological translation

Phonological translation is a type of constrained translation in which the text's

SL phonology is substituted with an equivalent TL phonology Except for anyunique grammatical or lexical aberrations necessitated in the process, the grammarand lexis of the SL text are frequently retained in the TL text in this type oftranslation

In phonological translation, sometimes changes in the grammar or lexis mayresult accidentally For example, it’s difficult to determine whether it means

“singular dog” or “plural dog” for the English plural word “dogs” when translatinginto the target language having no morpheme for plural meaning

Word-for-word translation is often meant by an interlinear translation with the

TL immediately below the SL words In the word-for-word translation, the wordorder of the SL will be preserved in the TL and all the words in the SL will betranslated directly with the most popular meaning that doesn’t depend on thecontext In this case, I just translate cultural words literally Word-for-wordtranslation is often used in the pre-translation process

Dad is a farmer

on the context

Example:

It’s too floral for me.

This translation is similar to the word-for-word translation, but there is arearrangement of the word order to the nearest TL equivalent

2.2.2.3 Faithful Translation

A faithful translation makes an effort to reconstruct the accurate meaning ofthe original context within the way that the TL grammatical structures are binding.Cultural words are “transferred” and the degree of grammatical and lexical

“abnormality” is preserved in the translation Faithful translation attempts tofaithfully transfer the SL writer’s intentions and text realization to the TL

Example:

As strong as a horse

 Khỏe như trâu

Westerners are familiar with the image of a fast, strong, and durable horse, but

in Vietnamese culture, the buffalo is the symbol of strength Therefore, there is achange in translation from SL to TL but the accurate meaning of the original context

is within the way that the TL grammatical structures are binding

2.2.2.4 Semantic Translation

Semantic translation requires a high value of aesthetics in the SL text It means

in the translation process, a translator must refine the completed version to avoid

assonance, word-play, or repetition jars In this case, it may translate less importantcultural words by a culturally neutral third or functional terms but not by culturalequivalents, and it may make other small concessions to the readership

Example:

It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass Here and there, over the

grass stood beautiful flowers like stars.

I can see that TL is translated very vividly with subtle and creative expressions

"cỏ mọc xanh um" instead of "soft green grass" Semantic translation hasreproduced not only the normal content of the text but also the subtle expressionand high aesthetic value of the text

2.2.2.5 Adaptation Translation

I usually use adaptation in translating plays (comedies) and poetry because it

is the “freest” translation form With adaptation, although the themes, characters,and plots are usually preserved, the SL cultures are converted to the TL culture, andthe text is rewritten

Example:

December, May and

 Gái tơ mà lấy chồng già

"December" represents old age, "May" represents youth, and this sentencedescribes a relationship or marriage with a large age gap

2.2.2.6 Free Translation

Applying this kind of translation, I don’t need to notice the manner the form ofthe original I only express the content through paraphrasing that may be muchlonger than the original It’s also called “intra-lingual translation” Prolixity andpretentiousness are not often translated at all

Example:

Flower gleam and glow

Let your powers shine

 Hoa ơi, hãy để chút tia sáng yếu ớt bừng sáng

Hãy để sức mạnh của hoa rực sáng

Because this is an advertisement, the meaningful content is not as important asthe message to be conveyed

A friend in need is a friend indeed

 Gian nan mới hiểu lòng người

The TL translated cannot convey all the meaningful content of the SL, sousing an equivalent or corresponding idiom in TL can express the symbolicmeaning and effectively transfer the cultural message of the idiom in SL

2.2.2.8 Communicative Translation

In this method, translators try their best to transfer both content and language.Translators are required to translate the exact contextual meaning This method isoften applied to translation on the radio or in newspapers Sometimes,communicative and semantic translations may coincide with each other

Example:

Heartsease (pansy) is used again for healing the heart It is for disappointment in love, and separation.

 Hoa păng xê cũng được dùng để chữa lành các vết thương lòng Nó xoa dịu

sự thất vọng trong tình yêu, nỗi đau phải sống trong cảnh ly thân.

The suggested translation is much longer than the SL because ofcommunicative translation, the translator interprets the short nouns in the SL withlonger nouns that are easier to understand in the TL, for example, "the heart"translates to "các vết thương lòng", "in separation" translates to "sống trong cảnh lythân"

2.2.3Principles

In the translating process, the translator needs to abide by all the principles of

translation In the book “Translation” (1990), Alan Duff also gave some general

principles that apply to all translations

2.2.3.1 Meaning

The meaning of the original text is precisely reflected in the translation As aresult, I should not add or remove anything at random The following guidelinesshould always be followed by a skilled translator:

- Some words are “loaded”, that is, are they containing underlying implications?(“correct me if I’m wrong…” suggests “I know I’m right”)

2.2.3.2 Form

Translators need to follow the order of words and ideas in the translation toensure that the translation is the closest and most appropriate equivalent in TL However, due to the different structures of the language, translators often have tochange the format and order of the words

2.2.3.3 Register

Languages fluctuate widely depending on the level of formality in a particularcircumstance As a result, to obtain a decent translation, the translator must payclose attention to how the writer or speaker establishes the tone to distinguishbetween formal or fixed terms and personal ones

2.2.3.4 Idioms

Idioms are one of the important parts of the translation Alan Duff mentionedthat idiomatic expressions were notoriously untranslatable including similes,metaphors, proverbs, sayings (as good as gold), jargon, slang, colloquialisms, andphrasal verbs

If translators cannot directly translate the expressions, they should considerthe followings:

- Keep the original expression, with a literal explanation in brackets.

2.2.3.5 Style and Clarity

Translators need to maintain the original style However, if there are mistakes

or boring repetitions written in the text without implications, the translator cancorrect the shortcomings for the benefit of the readers

2.2.3.6 Source Language Influence

One of the most common criticisms of translation is "it doesn't sound natural."This is because the way translators think and choose words is too influenced by theoriginal text A good way to remove the influence of the source language is to setthe text aside and then translate just a few sentences aloud from memory Thissuggests a natural thinking pattern in the first language that may not come to mindwhen looking at the SL text
