Trang 5How this all started
‘When | was trying to find the perfect college, | used every resource that was, available to me | went online to visit school Web sites; | talked with my high school guidance counselor; | read book after book; | hired a private counselor Sure, this was all very helpful, but nothing really told me what life was like at the schools | cared about, These sources weren't giving me enough information to
be totally confident in my decision,
In all my research, there were only two ways to get the information I wanted The first was to physically visit the campuses and see if things were really how the brochures described them, but this was quite expensive and not always feasible The second involved a missing ingredient: the students Actually talking to a few students at those schools gave me a taste of the information that | needed so badly The problem was that I wanted more but didn't have access to enough people,
In the end, I weighed my options and decided on a school that felt right and had
a great academic reputation, but truth be told, the choice was still very much a crapshoot | had done as much research as any other student, but was | 100 percent positive that | had picked the school of my dreams?
Absolutely not
My dream in creating College Prowler was to build a resource that people can use with confidence My own college search experience taught me the importance of gaining true insider insight; that's why the majority of this guide
is composed of quotes from actual students After all, shouldn't you hear about
‘a school from the people who know it best?
| hope you enjoy reading this book as much as we've enjoyed putting it together Tell me what you think when you get a chance I'd love to hear your college selection stories,
Trang 6Welcome to College Prowler®
When we created College Prowler, we felt it was critical that our content was unbiased and unaffiliated with any college or university We think it's important that our readers get honest information and a realistic impression of the student opinions on any campus—that's why if any aspect of a particular school is terrible, we (unlike a campus brochure) intend to publish it While we do keep
an eye out for the occasional extremist—the cheerleader or the cynic—we take pride in letting the students tell it like itis We strive to create a book that's as representative as possible of each particular campus Our books cover both the good and the bad, and whether the survey responses point to recurring trends or a variation in opinion, these sentiments are directly and proportionally expressed through our guides,
College Prowler guidebooks are in the hands of students throughout the entire process of their creation Because you can't make student-written guides without the students, we have students at each campus who help write, randomly survey their peers, edit, layout, and perform accuracy checks on every book that we publish From the very beginning, student writers gather the most up-to-date stats, facts, and inside information on their colleges They fill each section with student quotes and summarize the findings in editorial reviews In addition, each school receives a collection of letter grades (A through F) that reflect student opinion and help to represent contentment or satisfaction for each of our 20 specific categories Just as in grade school, the higher the mark the more content or more satisfied the students are with the particular category
Each book is the result of endless student contributions, hundreds of pages of research and writing, and countless hours of hard work All of this has led to the creation of a student information network that stretches across the nation
to every school that we cover It's no easy accomplishment, but i's the reason that our guides are such a great resource,
‘When reading our books and looking at our grades, keep in mind that every college is different and that the students who make up each school are not Uniform—as a result, it is important to assess schools on a case-by-case basis Because it's impossible to summarize an entire schoo! with a single number or description, each book provides a dialogue, not a decision, that's made up of
20 different topics and hundreds of student quotes In the end, we hope that this guide will serve as a valuable tool in your college selection process Enjoy!

RIT is consistently ranked among the elite colleges for technical degrees The programs generally bring out the “intensive” in intensive learning, and many departments are currently offering ground-breaking new majors All of RIT's, programs have the advantage of offering a hands-on approach to leaming by way of the co-op system, Overall, the professors are intelligent and helpful There are, as in any school, good and bad apples, but the bottom line is that if you need help you can find a professor who is willing to help you All professors often have an online presence either through the mycourses.rit.edu Web site
or their own personal Web sites Full-time professors are also required to have posted weekly office hours, and most professors will make appointments to meet with their students if they need assistance The professors at RIT are very concerned that their students closely follow course material In addition, most professors at RIT have some field experience, so they can give students an accurate depiction and show them what to expect out of the professions they are studying
Perhaps the most unique aspect of the RIT educational experience is the
‘quarter system The rigors of the quarter system keep RIT students on their toes, and if they can handle it for four years, transition from college to the real world will be made that much easier because of this system The quarter system can seem daunting at times, though, and it has been known to break even the most committed student, The 10-week period leaves litle room for
Trang 15procrastination and makes it all the more important for students to stay on top of their work and seek help the moment they begin having problems Fortunately, at RIT, seeking help is not a problem Perhaps the most important thing to remember is not to be afraid of your professors | cannot stress this point enough: ask for help! The professors can't help you if they don't know there is a problem The professors at RIT possess many fine qualities, but as far as | know, none of them are clairvoyant

Q Amazing Program for My Major
Computer Engineering here is really amazing The advisors and professors always make time for you and the facilities are great Theres a place to be tutored for everything and with the difficulty of the major, you will need them
‘The Co-Op program is said to be one of the bests | haven't done a co-op, but
am sure it wll be really fun, and not too difficult to get one
Animation Major
Em in the Schoo! of Film and Animation at Rochester Institute of Technology I'm an Animation major and so far, i's been amazing The professors are really helpful and knowledgeable in the field, The workload is intense, but keeps the students on track Sometimes i's hard to animate at school due to limited resources, but overall, i's a great program
Industrial Eningeering at RIT
RIT has a fantastic Engineering program IE is a close nit group of students and professors who are truly focused on getting students to achieve their highest potential
Q Academics
The academics are challenging, Since the school is a trimester school, you only
have 10 weeks for a class The material is fast paced so you have to keep up
© A Solid Mix
Trang 19Many of the teachers are excellent, although every now and again you will find a professor whose ability to teach is questionable Classes encourage creativity and discussion amongst peers
I came to this school for the academics | like the quarter system because
it keeps me from slacking off and makes sure | am on track There isn't much room to mess around
@ My biggest complaint about RIT's academics is that we don't have a 'plus
‘and minus’ system; you can get an 80, or an 89, and still get the same B | have decent grades, but I still have only a 3.0, which bothers me,

Rochester is New York State's third largest urban area Within the city lie a
‘number of interesting and stimulating experiences—that is if you don't mind all the brick (brick roads, brick buildings, and brick street signs) Home to leviathans Kodak and Xerox, Rochester has become a city full of opportunity, especially for people pursuing business and technical careers There are eight colleges and universities in the area, including the University of Rochester, St John Fisher College, and SUNY Geneseo, so younger college-age individuals, are abundant
Rochester is also home to @ number of historical and cultural attractions There's a thriving theater scene, and many museums and art galleries can be found in the surrounding areas There are also a number of beautiful parks with nature trails and picnic areas for students to enjoy The main problem with Rochester is the lack of student-oriented activities Most college-age students aren't concerned with parks, schools, or the Susan B Anthony House after they've experienced them two or three times Bars and clubs tend to go out
of business shortly after their grand openings, and the constant change of
‘ownership and the lack of attempts by local businesses to lure students into the city discourages many students who, therefore, choose to remain on campus, The city of Rochester is slowly becoming a major metropolis with a myriad of activities available, but until the city springs for more student-oriented nightlife

Trang 25Health & Safety
The College Prowler Grade on Health & Safety:
A high grade in Health & Safety means that students generally feel safe, campus police are visible, blue-light phones and escort services are readily available, and safety precautions are not overly necessary Other factors include the convenience
of the student health center and the quality of services offered there,
Student Author Overview
Overall, the RIT campus is incredibly safe, considering the number of students Mostly what Campus Safety deals with are drug- and alcohol-related problems,
or occasional cases of automobile damage Theft is not a notable problem on
‘campus, and most cases occur only if the stolen items were left unattended
or in unlocked rooms or cars Students, male and female alike, say that they feel safe walking alone around campus at any hour of the day or night—this is mostly due to the overall serenity of the local area The various blue phones around campus are for students who would want to phone in an emergency for whatever reason, and are another reason that students feel so secure here Knowing that Campus Safety is only the push of a button away is very
‘comforting to many students,
While Campus Safety is not highly regarded by many students, they are a respectable group who works (sometimes a little too hard) to ensure that the safety of all students is preserved, It is worth noting the past publicity that RIT received as a result of the so-called RIT riot during early May of 2004 This event was an isolated occurrence, and a brief one at that, Student sentiment was mixed regarding the incident Some felt that Campus Safety and local police violated their rights as students, while others felt that the wily patrons were overly obnoxious and got what they deserved (mostly fines) The schoo! administration has since addressed this problem by way of open forums and

RIT's Campus Safety offers weekend escort services, which students lovingly refer to as “the drunk bus.” The drunk bus circles the campus on weekend evenings, and offers students rides to their apartments, no matter how rude and obnoxious the students may seem The drunk bus is a great resource to take advantage of if you have been out drinking or don't want to ride home with someone who has been drinking The bus is free of charge and drops students off in front of the dorm areas or apartment complexes

One of the greatest features at RIT is its unprecedented computer network
‘The sheer volume that the system can handle is astounding The school openly boasts that no student needs to bring their own computer to campus since there are enough school-owned computers to supply the need While bringing your own computer isn't necessary, it is suggested, if for no other reason than being able to sit in your dorm room and do your work with cheese-curl
‘crumbs all over your Snoopy pajamas Just simply plug your computer in, and you'll be connected to the campus and the Web in a matter of moments The recent waves of worms and viruses that have been attacking RIT's system are considered by ITS to be a minor inconvenience It is because of this, however, that students who choose to bring their own computers are now required to register each one at the beginning of the year It is at this time when each individual computer is checked by ITS to ensure that each one is virus-free and adequately protected from future virus outbreaks One of RIT's priorities is that students not only receive the best technology services, but the most cautious
as well
ITS and Resnet are also great resources that are available to RIT students
At RIT, students can always get tech support and computer repairs (within reason) for free The staff is always helpful and courteous, even to those students who aren't computer savvy If you aren't willing to go to the student- run tech support center, there are always other students you can turn to With one of the best computer science programs in the country, it is a pretty safe
Trang 30bet that you will know at least one reputable CS major or someone with a vast knowledge of computers; maybe this someone will owe you a favor!
Yes: Black and white printing is generally free of charge, with some
restrictions on the amount and type of pages students can print, Certain labs charge for specialized printing, such as color printing, glossy printing, and large sheet printing
Special Software & Hardware Discounts
You can get a number of software packages at the bookstore for student rates Some of the most frequently purchased packages are Adobe
Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as Microsoft Office
Did You Know?
The Nathaniel Rochester Hall, which houses the Computer Science House, was voted the third most wired dorm in the nation! The Galisano Building for the College of Information and Computer Science is a state-of-the-art facility that gives students access to some of the best equipment available
Students Speak Out On Computers
Computers and WIFI at RIT Are Great
There are many many computer labs at RIT THere is a mix of pc's and macs,
so everyone can have something that fits to their needs There is also desktop support in everyone of the colleges, which is extremely useful As well as having computer labs on the academic side, there are computer labs in some
of the dorms There are many different places to print what you need The
Trang 31speed of the network is incomparable, it is so fast There is wireless all over the campus which is nice Having your own computer and printer is definitely
an advantage, but | don't think someone who doesn't have those things would suffer
Wireless Everywhere
‘There are many computer labs around campus some p.c and some mac The network is very reliable and you can wireless access pretty much anywhere | would recommend a personal computer just because it makes life easier
Q Easy and Accessible
There are always computers And they always have the software you need And they are always available at reasonable hours There isn't a need to say more
Campus Computer
My college has plenty of labs that students can use, however there are very few printers that they can use and these printers often have limits to what the student can print Network reliability is usually pretty good, but cuts in and out due to constant construction Students are almost completely required to bring their own computer, as labs are crowded and not always open, and their own printer, due to minimal printing capabilities on campus
Computers by the Hundreds
m fairly certain there isn't a single building on campus without at least one
‘computer lab of some sort Realistically, it is a tech campus | get better wifi speed outside of the buildings than | do with an ethernet cable back home The network crashed just once on freshman registration day and maintenance is
‘generally done in the early hours of the morning, between say 3 and 4 in the morning Printing can be done either in your primary college building or in the library which is generally open until around 2 in the morning,
Computers at My School
| don't really use the computers at my school often They are great but it tends
to get very crowded
Computer Labs
‘The computer labs are very high tech However, sometimes it would be days when just about all labs are full when you really need to use the computer for your schoo! work while others are just on the computer for fun
Trang 32Q The computer system at RIT is one of the main reasons that I chose this school, There are connections available in nearly every room, which makes downloading teachers’ notes easy during lectures,
Trang 33‘abundance of things to do on campus
Student Author Overview
It is hard not to be impressed with the facilities that RIT has to offer The Gordon Field House recently opened and has since provided students with
a spacious work-out area, as well as two new pools to bask in It is the site for athletic events, seminars, and concerts throughout the year Gordon is already proving to be a great asset to the school The classrooms and labs are well kept and equipped with Ethernet ports for student use Also, many classrooms are being transformed into “smart rooms,” allowing the professors
to simply use their laptops to teach class rather than write awkward-looking notes on the board or on overheads The RIT student union (The SAU) is
‘comprised of two main areas—the SAU and the Fireside Lounge The SAU is home to two separate dining halls and coffeeshops The Candy Counter and information desk are also on the first floor of the SAU, providing easy access for students The Fireside Lounge is a favorite for students as well This area has a spacious, 'homey’ feel, due to its working fireplace and plasma television, The Fireside is a great place for students to hang out, lie back, or study The room has been reserved for many types of events, ranging from club-sponsored parties to Red Cross blood drives,
Overall, student reaction to the campus' facilities, and campus appearance in general, is mixed Many people think that RIT is a very unattractive campus, made mostly of brick with very sharp textures and overly-obscure architecture However, there have been many renovations and additions in the past few
Trang 34years to improve the aesthetic of campus The addition of the Paley sculpture the Sentinel was met with mixed responses, though most students agree that itis an original piece of artwork that makes campus seem all the more unique
‘While itis still mainly brick and sharp angles, students and residents alike can't help but stop and stare at the architectural anomaly that is RIT
Popular Places to Chill
‘Academic Quad around the Infinity Loop
Movie Theater on Campus
None, but movies are often shown around campus for $1 or free depending
on the location When the weather permits movies are shown on the Greek lawn as well
Trang 35Favorite Things To Do
RIT’s campus is full of things to do if you are willing to look for them You can, work up a sweat in the field house, hang out in the pool or hot tub, grab a cup of coffee at Java's, or see what's going down in the SAU,
There are numerous events throughout the quarter, most of which take place
on campus, The school's Homecoming and Spring Fest are two very popular events involving concerts, free barbeques, festivals, and other events
College Activities Board (CAB) sponsored events, such as on-campus
movies and trips to various destinations, are also a student favorite, These events are usually free or inexpensive, and allow students to get off campus for a day or a weekend and experience some of the best that upstate New York has to offer Hockey games are a favorite student pastime in the winter quarter The crowds are large, loud, and energetic as they cheer on the RIT Tigers playing host to rivals such as Hobart and Elmira, Make sure you get there early for good seats
Students Speak Out On Facilities
@ Library Is Perfect Place to Study!
The library at Rochester Institute of Technology accommodates most of the student body It has four floors, each with a different environment and resources, The third and fourth floor have individual rooms where students can
go to study with groups or by themselves in silence On the first floor of the library is also a Java's where students can take breaks and buy drinks and snacks
Q An Overall Awesome Campus
The campus is very intriguing, Every building has its own structure and is very unique The underground tunnels make it very easy to travel in the frigid temperatures of the winter Overall, the campus is very welcoming and a great environment to be in
Facilities
The Facilities are state of the art, very nice and large There are many events for the students to take place in If you like to eat there are several cafeterias you can eat at A few months ago we got a visit and concert from Snoop Dogg,
So campuus activities are great, Sports at the institute are competative,
Technology
They're very modern and up-to-date with technology
Trang 36Q Athletic Center
The athletic center at RIT isn't the highest quality There is one building for the athletes The building has one full basketball court, a smaller gym that softball and baseball use for batting, a tiny ice rink, and small locker rooms The athletic teams are number one in the nation or make it to the frozen four yet our facilities don't show that we are that great | am a softball player for RIT and we are in training year round but its dificult when we are fighting with other teams just to get practice space or even be able to get into the weight room
They're Ok The campus resembles a prison
The athletic facilities are the best on campus With a D1 hockey program the varsity gym and locker rooms are ok The library often gets overcrowded There are litle to no campus activities giving students nothing to look forward
to save the ungodly amount of homework that they get The whole place is constructed of bricks and nothing else, There is very little green space, The
‘campus resembles a prison
Q The athletic center is amazing, but unfortunately it's always packed It has
a gym with machines, free weights, swimming pool, and even a lazy river, The other facilities are nothing special The library is very lacking and doesn't have alot to offer
Q The new field house gym is amazing! It has 16,000 square feet of work- out space, including really nice Olympic-sized pools and awesome raquetball courts
Trang 37Student Author Overview
Gracie's is the main dining hall for freshmen, and a specified number of meals are allotted in their dining plans Most students vehemently complain about having to eat at Gracie's so much during their first year Many students rarely opt to eat at Gracie's more than a few times after their first year Even students who remain loyal patrons at Gracie's will tell you that the food isn't bad, just monotonous The food at Gracie's is served in a buffet-style, and it's all-you- can-eat, but students normally find the same foods (or very similar) on the tables nearly every day, The addition of The Crossroads, Sandella's, and Beanz has given students more options to choose from Many of the eateries
‘on campus accept meal options, debit, or Flex points as payment, Java's and Henry's, however, only accept Flex or cash Students can put money onto their Flex account at the Bursars office This money can then be used at the bookstore, any of the food establishments on campus, Subway, the Pita Pit, and any of the vending machines on campus Debit can be used at most dining halls and in the vending machines only, and it comes as a part of most meal plans It is important to note that Flex money will roll over to the next quarter, but debit will not
Overall, the campus food selection at RIT leaves students with plenty of options There isn't much that you can't get on campus by way of food, and (get this) most of it is actually edible, although many freshmen will tell you that this does not apply to Gracie's The main complaint is the hours that the halls, are open With the wide variety of eateries on campus, it can be confusing to
Trang 38students which restaurant is open at what time Students also tend to complain
‘about the lack of a 24-hour eating spot on campus The fact that there are three markets available on campus is also a great advantage While the prices at the markets are a bit high, it is possible to use meal options and debit So, until their debit points run out, students don't mind the prices as much
