Part A: INTRODUCTION

I BACKGROUND

In the time of rapid development of technology and industry 4.0, foreign languages have really become “A golden key” for the exchange and

cooperation between countries all over the world In Vietnam nowadays, the demand of foreign languages, especially English increases higher and higher English has become a compulsory subject at school as well as universities Teaching foreign languages always has lots of variation and change the rhythm general evolution of civilization and world culture - It is something that nobody can deny Therefore, it requires the teacher teaching this subject must always be responsible and dedicated to impart knowledge truly effective, satisfy the requirements of society But it seems that teaching and learning English at many secondary schools in Vietnam is not very effective The key point of learning English well is to increase English learning interest Students always have a lot

of interests in learning English first, but learning English is not easy Then they lose their learning interests gradually Even they don’t want to learn English any more They are tired of memorizing vocabularies and learning complicated grammar and boring environment in classroom With 45 minutes in class, teacher doesn’t have enough time to let students play games as well as other activities I think the best way to increase student’s interest is organizing extracurricular activities Einstein once said: "Interest is the best teacher." The students will not feel that learning is a burden if they are interested in studying They will put their hearts into learning actively Arousing the interest of the students is the key to learn English well Learning interest can promote the students to throw themselves into studying enthusiastically It also can enrich the students' knowledge, open the students' mind and make up for a weakness of intelligent development

But how should we arouse the learning interest? Learning interest cannot produce spontaneously All kinds of social factors are influencing the studying

of the students The teachers should arouse the students plan fully and purposefully to make the students interested in learning and transform the needs from the family, society and school into the internal ones Therefore, with this article, I decided to I share experiences with colleagues the topic: “Enhance

II theoretical basis

Begin by making sure that teachers understand what interest, the role of interest

1 What is interest?

Interest is the best teacher It refers to a readiness or desire to give attention to something or learn about something (Longman dictionary of contemporary English, P798, and the Commercial press) It is a psychological inclination with which students can understand something well and takes an active part in learning activities

2 The role and manifest of interest

When students are interested in what they are learning They will learn them in a good mood and won’t feel tired during learning English It’s obvious that they will get twice the achievement with half an effort On the contrary, if students lose their interest, they will learn anything with a passive attitude, which leads to such results: They study English as a burden and are fed up with English Thus they will get half the result with twice the effort

3 Methods to enhance students’ English learning interest

To enhance student’s interest in learning English, teacher plays main role Motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic, is a key factor in the success of students

at all stages of their education, and teachers can play a pivotal role in providing and encouraging that motivation in their students Of course that’s much easier said than done, as all students are motivated differently and it takes time and a lot of effort to learn to get a classroom full of kids enthusiastic about learning, working hard, and pushing themselves to excel

Even the most well-intentioned and educated teachers sometimes lack the skills to keep kids on track, so whether you’re a new teacher or an experienced one, try using extracurricular activities to motivate your students and to encourage them to live up to their true potential

III Practical basis

The project "Teaching and learning foreign languages in the national education system for the period 2008-2020" was approved by the Prime Minister

on September 30th, 2013 Starting from the academic year 2008, Dong Khe primary and secondary school, as well as most schools in the district held official teaching English subjects Therefore, in the teaching process, our school faced many difficulties in teaching this subject The biggest difficulty is the lack

of teachers of English, at that time the school had hired contract teachers, teacher shortage makes it difficult to complete the planning department and the quality of teaching is very much affected The second challenge, English is a new and difficult subjects, so students are difficult to reach and good in this course

We know, each subject has its own peculiarity As a teacher of English, I realized that English is a difficult subject, even at first it is a luxury for coursework student's mountainous regions as they thought School year 1998, I started teaching career, the first day I walked into the classroom, I greet and say

a few sentences in English is very simple so that students respond to me is incomprehensible silence, I called some students of the class are considered good stand up answers my question They face d awkward and confused Some strongly expressed an opinion that: We mainly hear teachers lecture and take notes, rarely speak English and could not understand what I said The next day they continued to English students now have a sense of fear of bald or boredom

I wonder, concern: Why do students have those problems? And that time let me answer that English is a difficult subject and new students it's hard to reach Actual past few weeks of classes, I was oblivious to a problem that they are almost "afraid" to learn in English, elementary students are only good at this subject is like most students left school very weak and maybe we just learned that due to the forced study for points Also, their vocabulary is too little, grammar knowledge uncertainty, limited communication level, non-standard pronunciation As a result, students are less interested

With the difficulties mentioned above, I have concerns and find solutions

to overcome by organizing for student extracurricular activities Through the active nature of learning by playing

Part B: CONTENTS

I SUBJECTS AND SCOPE OF THE STUDY

1 Aims of the research

- To introduce interest and extra activities and to show the advantages of extra activities in learning interest

- To show how to organize outdoor activities effectively and how to deal with initial problems that may arise

- To show how this idea can be used for various outdoor activities

- To give teachers confidence in organizing extracurricular activities themselves

2 Scope of research:

This study is only concerned with ways of organizing activities outside classroom rather than with teaching techniques

II REAL STATES:

1 Students

English is one of the main subjects at school, but this subject is quiet difficult It is not easy for the students who don’t have aptitude to study English Specially, the students in rural area, remote area, and mountainous area are poor

in English

The innovation of program in textbook and applying new method in teaching as well as learning, many students like this subject They warmly respond all activities but most of them are good and excellent student The rest are poor, they learn English passively, they are always afraid of speaking in public because they are shy to make mistake We can see that these students are not keen on learning English Many students are short of learning conscious, lack of learning patience them is embarrassed to get and apply the theory in practicing skill But when students are interested in what they are learning They will learn them in a good mood and won’t feel tired during learning English It’s obvious that they will get twice the achievement with half an effort On the contrary, if students lose their interest, they will learn anything with a passive attitude, which leads to such results: They study English as a burden and are fed

up with English Thus they will get half the result with twice the effort

At the beginning of this year, I was offered to teach classes at Dong Khe primary and secondary school: Grade 7 Taking survey of grade 7 I got the following result:

According to the survey, most students are poor and fail Having that result due to students is not interested in learning English I asked my students: Why don’t you like English? Most of them answer “because it is difficult to remember too many words, the grammar is too complicated”

English is one of the subjects many students are most afraid of learning so the poor result is not avoided The following evidences are proved clearly that there is the lack of students’ learning interest in English leading to poor result:

Evidence 1: I asked 10 students by chance in class 7 to talk about

themselves in two minutes and result: 8 students only talk about name, class, address, hobby…

Example: My name is (/did/ wrong pronunciation) Kim An, I am

fourteen year (plural) old, I live in …., I like English, I

am….(heritage)….student I….….(heritage)….like watch TV (grammar).I like

go to by bike

Evidence 2: I gave students a dialogue and asked 15 pairs to read aloud

and the result: each student made at least four mistakes, even there are 3 students made thirty mistakes in 95 words they read

2 Teachers

Many teachers don’t want to change method They are afraid of the innovation although they know that there are many students lost their learning interests gradually because the teaching method is not persuasive enough to attract students’ interest Some teachers don’t want to let their students be in the extracurricular activities because they think that they will waste time I had

taken a survey to check if the teachers of English often organize extracurricular activities and I got the following result:

3 The reasons of above state

*) Students:

- Subjective reason: lazy, be afraid, poor perception Timid, lack of self-confidence, complex, the method of learning is not suitable

- Objectives reason: The teaching method, family, the environment, psychology…

*) Teachers:

- Be afraid of innovation

- Limited aptitude

III SOLUTION

1 Overall

To solve all these problems, I organize extracurricular activities regularly, about once a month is the most suitable To avoid being boring and repetitive, every time I hold a different types of activities such as: English club, English karaoke, watching cartoons or films in English, learning English from the online programs on the Internet Each activity has the effect of supporting and its own significance in the process of attracting and stimulating the students in learning the language One importance is that we must know how to organize such activities appropriately and cleverly, it will have a good result for teaching English Following are some extracurricular activities that I have held in recent years in order to attract and stimulate the passion of students in learning English These activities really brought a very high efficiency and stimulate the students' passion for English

2 Organizing extracurricular activities

2.1 Watching cartoons and films in English

In the extracurricular lessons in the afternoon, I often spend 45 minutes getting my students to watch cartoons or children film in English With this

activity, not only the students relax their mind but they also learn to get the knowledge of English naturally After watching a movie, I usually give the tasks

to check if they can or cannot understand what they have just watched and check

if they can remember the main contents of the movie

* Example: 1 After watching cartoon “HORRID HENRY”, can you list out

some sentences using “to be”

2 Who can retell something that you like best about this cartoon?

The fact that the students are very passionate about watching cartoons, so they remember quite clearly the content of the film Naturally, they learn amount

of vocabulary and sentences to communicate and use every day

2.2 Learning English through interesting English songs

At the beginning of the period, or at the end of it, I usually spend a certain amount of time training students to sing the songs in English via subtitles This

is causing excitement for the children The kids are so keen on singing, so they will be easier to belong to the vocabulary or structures used in the song Through learning to sing, not only will the students strengthen the English

subject knowledge, they also develop their social skills I think this is a very practical and essential complementary activity when learning a language

Example: Learning to sing the song “TELL ME WHY” on KARAOKE online

2.3 Learning English from the online programs on the Internet

Today, with the strong development of the Internet, it makes people learn languages easily to reach with the knowledge and skills they need There are many programs learning English is introduced to students through networking

sites such as “Fun Easy English”, “English online”, “Tiếng Anh Hoa Mặt Trời” To consolidate vocabulary, grammar or reinforce the skills of listening,

speaking reading and writing to students, I introduces and instructs them about some English course important and useful for junior high school students
