1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Rationales of the study

Information Technology (IT) plays a decisive role in the development ofhuman civilization Most of our recent inventions are attributed to advancements

in technology Technological innovations have positive impacts on every area ofour lives This means that IT has enhanced socialization as well as improvedlabor productivity

Technology is strongly linked to the improvement of the comprehensiveeducation The application of IT has a strong effect on the method of teaching,making lessons understandable among students Therefore, utilizing IT inclassrooms has been a strong development at school in recent years

English is now considered as one of the most important subjects in highschools Therefore, the requirements for foreign language teachers are morerigorous This means that teachers should apply more new teaching methodswhich enhance the quality and the efficiency of delivering knowledge

Providing review lessons is one of the most essential parts of the lectureprocess It is the fact that the preparation of review lessons is not as effective asexpected due to the boring activities and the limited amount of time

For some main grounds mentioned above, I find that Quizizz applicationcan bring many outstanding benefits to the review lessons In order to encourage

students to be more active and independent, I boldly choose the topic “The use

of Quizizz application in English review lessons for the learning enhancement

of 10 th grade students”.

1.2 Purposes of the study

Pursuing the topic “The use of Quizizz application in English review lessons for the learning enhancement of 10 th grade students”, I personally

hope that I will have a chance to find an effective method to replace thetraditional teaching way by simply applying technological advances in classes.Moreover, I hope that it can reduce teachers’ workload as well as attract morestudents’ attention

1.3 Subjects of the study

- A method to effectively create review lessons by Quizizz

- The 10th graders at Truong Thi high school.

1.4 Methods of the study

- Research, analysis, systematization, and generalization of documentsrelated to topics: Theoretical materials for the teaching combined with IT,textbooks as well as other resources to arise students’ interests

- Practical investigation through the observation method and surveys

- Professional solutions: Discussion and consultation with colleagues in thesame departments and co-workers with high qualifications in IT

- Pedagogical experimentation: Collect feedback from students on teachinghours using Quizizz Evaluation of the study results according to the knowledge,skills, and attitude of the students

2 CONTENT

2.1 Theoretical basis

“Information technology is the science and activity of using computers and

other electronic equipment to store and send information.”(Cambridge Dictionary)

The application of information technology is the use of informationtechnology in the socio-economic activities, foreign relations, national defenseand security, and other activities to improve productivity, quality, andeffectiveness of these aspects

Widely applying the advances of information technology in scientificresearch needs to illustrate its advantages in improving the quality of educationand training from 2016 to 2020, towards 2025

2.2 Practical problems before applying the initiatives

There are many difficulties making review lessons less attractive tostudents Firstly, the English textbooks have been used for many years,and the contents of the lessons are no longer suitable to improve thelanguage capacity of students The amount of knowledge in some of thelessons seems overwhelming By applying only traditional teachingmethods, teachers have to spend much time on preparing a lot ofpaperwork with a large amount of content However, due to the limitedtime of the review lessons, teachers may be not able to cover the total ofprepared lectures Therefore, students may be required to do morehomework that puts massive pressure on them Secondly, there is a certainproportion of students who lack grammatical and lexical knowledge tofully understand what teachers have delivered, resulting in students’frustration Last but not least, the content of review lessons has been

introduced in the previous lessons, so students are not often eager to studyanymore although they cannot totally master the comprehension of theunits.

Teachers need to find a method to effectively review a large amount

of lesson knowledge, while attracting students and reducing pressure onthem after their participation in a series of activities at school Besides,the method should play an important role in classifying the students’levels

Quizizz is a learning platform that offers multiple tools to makestudents more excited and connected By using Quizizz, teachers cancreate lessons, conduct formative assessments, assign homework as well

as have other interactions with students in a captivating way

2.3 Other tools to solve the problems

There are some tools which are applied to improve learning capacity ofstudents, especially in review activities

- Using flashcards: While using flashcards is a traditional method, it

is still widely used in learning today Flashcards can stimulate visualmemory It means that the students will remember what they see whenstudying this way, helping students learn materials more quickly.However, it is easy to teach younger students through flashcards, butthese can be used in a limited way for students who are studying at highschools due to the range of complex scientific vocabulary in theircurriculum

- Using notebooks: Teachers could remind students to write down

the significant range of knowledge, then check out and give marks tostudents’ work Besides a few positive aspects, the approach of the usage

of notebooks in review lessons contains some drawbacks It depends onthe students' self-discipline, but sometimes students find it exhausting andtake notes carelessly, leading to the ineffectiveness of the method

- Group activities: Teachers divide all students into groups and allow

them to discuss about certain topics and play games These activities canenhance the students’ enthusiasm and develop strong interaction amongthem However, the large number of students may be a reason whichmakes it tough for teachers to control the whole class and preciselyevaluate individual capacities of each student

2.4 Approaches

2.4.1 The advantages of Quizizz application

One of the highlights of Quizizz is that it is easy to manipulate Users justneed to sign up accounts and select available content in the application to createthe exercises With a specific lecture, teachers can compile by themselves andallow students to access and complete assignments

The questions will run on the music platform that creates comfort forstudents The process to complete the exercises is very simple With moderncomputer systems in the labs and libraries, or even personal mobile phones,teachers can allow their students to do the tasks as an amusing game within thelast 10-15 minutes

All students can participate in the game at the same time and the teacherscan evaluate the students' understanding levels more accurately so that they canprovide further directions By this way, they do not waste much time checkingout each student’s answers which other conventional educating methods cannotprovide in the review lessons

Each student can follow test results and make comparisons with theanswers of classmates, increasing the competitive attitude among students andemerging their motivation to study harder

Finally, Quizizz application combines all the advantages of other methodsmentioned in the previous section, even with the basic account Consequently,teachers can compile many kinds of lessons with different tools that makes theirlectures more attractive to students

2.4.2 The use of available resources on Quizizz application

Step 1: Create a personal account on Quizizz

Visit https://quizizz.com/ on the Google toolbar or web browsers on

the electronic devices

In the website’s interface, teachers create accounts in "sign up"

section: they can sign in with a Google account or Facebook account

After signing in, they should choose their teachers' section to takeadvantage of their own.

Step 2: Using the multiple choice questions on Quizizz

- Press “English” to start learning.

The exercises are designed on Quizizz as a variety of games Boththe questions and answers are shown to help teachers evaluate and select

many different options The “filter by” section allows users to select suitable objectives while choosing "play" allows teachers to try the

application before providing to students

Quizizz allows teachers to copy and adjust the questions that have been

created by other users to match their students’ levels with “copy” and “edit”

functions

Teachers can opt for “new question” to create a new question They

also can copy or edit available resources These functions save more timeand effort for them Moreover, the teachers from the same department canwork together to compose more diversity of materials

2.4.3 Applying Quizizz to the preparation of review exercises 2.4.3.1 The preparation of review questions according to the topics

Teachers can use Quizizz to create questions for the review lessons.For example, there are some questions for “UNIT 3: PEOPLE'SBACKGROUND” (10th grade English textbook):

2.4.3.2 Composing trivia questions on Quizizz

Quizizz allows users to create both questions and lectures On thatapplication, teachers can use many kinds of questions, on many differenttopics Besides, for specific purposes, they should design lectures bythemselves

However, my “initiatives and experience” focuses on the use ofQuizizz which innovates how to compose the review exercises, so Iintroduce specific steps as: Create a quiz Name Choose relevant subjects Next.

Teachers may use the "create a new question" section or select

questions from the library which are available in search items Teachersalso can compose many different kinds of vivid questions by insertingimages, sounds, and videos with the drop-offs action

Only image insertion is the free tool that can be used with a basicaccount so if users want to insert more audio files and videos, they need toupgrade the accounts However, using available formats on Quizizzapplication is fairly convenient for me.

Additionally, to avoid spending too much time in preparation, users

can choose the “duplicate” tool to replicate the format of the existing

questions and edit the content to compose the new ones

Another interesting feature of Quizizz is the "preview" section In

particular, if there are lexical components associated with the lecture,Quizizz will make flashcards accordingly, helping teachers be flexible inusing documents

After completion, the question will be shown as in the picture below

Teachers should save their question in folders as they want

To play Quizizz games with others, teachers have to create at least 2questions in each test Besides, they can set up features by clicking

“Setting” After doing that, they should click “Save” to save their test inthe library

2.4.3.3 Applying Quizizz application in the review lessons.

I have applied Quizizz application to prepare some lessons for class10A6 this school year as the schedule below:

To assess the effectiveness of the Quizizz application in reviewingthe 10th grade English lessons and to evaluate the feasibility of theresearch, I conducted pedagogical experimentation in 2 classes (10A5 &10A6) at Truong Thi high school
