I.REASON FOR CHOOSING THE THEME

In the period of integration, English has become one of the most importantinternational languages in the world The number of people who communicate and use

it as the first language has been increasing day by day In Vietnam, everyone is aware

of the roles of English in their life – jobs, so the need of learning English has beenpopular all areas But it is not easy for many students to learn English , first andforemost the things to understand and apply language and communication well Especially for students in the countryside , they don’t have enough modern learningcondition and no chance to practise English So the quality of the exams in this subject

is not good, can’t meet the demand about integration and aims that career requires

The aim of English is to set up and develop basic skills of students aboutEnglish and intellectual qualities to continue further study or working Therefore, textbooks of upper secondary school from 10 to 12 classes are based on the maticapproach and think highly of active learning methods of students Four skills :listening, speaking, reading and writing are concerned and co-ordinated in exercises andactivities in classes

One of four skills which English learners in general, students of upper secondary

in particular, usually have have in learning is listening skill

In fact, in order to develop listening skill ,the foreign language learners have topractise listening regularly , long term with different forms and content.Teaching andlearning listening English are not new but difficult for teachers and students of uppersecondary In the process of both teaching and observing students.I know that thepractice of listening skill for students to have difficulties Most of students don't knowhow to learn to listen , they find listening period the most difficult In the class, students

say that they can not listen clearly although there are so many words they know How to

do to help studnents to apply their vocabulary and grammar structures to listeneffectively? So in the process of teaching, I myself find some active, simple methodsand easy to understand in order to guarantee scientific quality with the aim to developthoughtful ability , guess and creativity of students With my experience in teachingEnglish at Hau Loc 3 High School, I have researched reference documents, learnedfrom co-workers as well as applied many different teaching methods I have gained

some first positive results, so I would like to choose the theme “" Some methods that

help students develop listening skill English 11 ( basic)" I am very glad to receive

the sharing and contributing ideas of colleagues so that I can perfect in the process ofapplying and teaching facts

II AIMS OF THE RESEARCH:

English subject is gereralized and gereralizing polpularly in every school in ourcountry However, it is considered one of the most difficult subjects How to doteaching-learning English to have great result, especially raising listening skill forstudents It is required in innovation of teaching methods of teachers and the hard, enthusiastic , studious learners or students As a teacher of English in upper secondaryschool, I know the good and bad things of students in the process of learning So Ialways think of finding a new teaching method, the most effective way for students tohelp them understand the lesson and motivate them to love English, far and foremost toraise listening skill among sudents

So, How to do for students to practise listening skill rapidly, effectively andeasily to learn? especially when we apply in factual activities when they speak toforeingers?

III.SCOPE AND OBJECT

Trang 4

-Scope: Researching in the process of teaching English at Hau Loc 3 Upper Secondary

School

-Object: This subject is concerned with ways of organizing activities in the class.

Students of grade 11 at Hau Loc 3 upper secondary school

IV RESEARCHING METHOD:

The problem we concern is that how we can overcome above weaknesses toimprove quality of listening skill, to help students confident in communication , usingEnglish as a second language, to have fluency in every word, sentence, especially withcountryside students as students in Hau Loc district

Reading reference books, discussing with other teachers, applying in teaching, observing and drawing out experiences

PART II: CONTENT CHAPTER 1: ARGUMENT GROUNDS

1 Theoritical grounds.

Just when students start learning English, they get accustomed to four basicskills: listening, speaking, reading and writing It is through these four skills thatteachers pass knowledge to students and students gain their knowledge Among thesefour skills, listening is an important skill to students It requires that teachers not onlyunderstand well effective teaching methods but also apply smoothly the principle

“Learning parallels hands-on” [5]

Starting from the view of “Learners are the centre”, teaching and learningmethods have changed greatly Teachers are not those who hold knowledge and pass it

to students, but those who guide, support, consult and check students’ working.Students do not absorb knowledge passively Becoming the centre of the teaching-learning process, students are completely active and creative in study to achieve goodlearning results and know how to apply knowledge in real life [4]

From the grounds above, how to apply innovative methods of teaching thelistening skill is very important It helps students feel confident when they listen andcommunicate effectively in daily life

4

Trang 5

2 Practical grounds.

Most high schools have used new English teaching and learning materials, whichask students to develop equally all four skills, among which the listening one requiresthat students have to spend much time listening not only in class time but also outsideclass so that they can communicate better in English

In order to raise the effect of listening lessons, teachers had better study eachlesson carefully, ask students to prepare necessary things before the lessons, find outand apply a wide variety of practice forms which are suitable to material facilities ofeach school to improve students’ English

When experimenting in some classes of grade 11 at my school, I have gainedsome encouraging results My periods of teaching listening skill become moreinteresting, which makes students more feel confident when listening andcommunicating in English

CHAPTER 2: REAL SITUATIONS

1 Students.

Generally, the level of students’ knowledge is quite low due to the difficulteconomic conditions Besides, the English knowledge of students is not equal in thesame class and among classes in the same grade Besides, the number of students in aclass is quite high (about 40- 45 students) These result in difficulties when teachersdecide to choose methods as well as control class activites during listening lessons

2 Teachers.

After testing some teaching methods, teachers often feel discouraged becausestudents do not participate in activities actively Thus, the practical results are not asgood as expected ones Gradually, teachers seem not to pay serious attention tolistening lessons They often use some simple traditional techniques to teach listeningtasks in each unit quickly Therefore, most of class time is spent on controlled tasks intextbook

3 Material facilities.

Due to the lack of essential material facilities especially projectors, most teachers

do not make full use of such document sources as the Internet, pictures, video clips,…With these limitations, the effect of listening tasks is not good enough to satisfy thegeneral purposes It is like a vicious circle which has no exit for quite a long time

4 Survey results before applying methods.

SOME EXPERIENCE USED TO IMPROVE REAL SITUATIONS

I Basic steps of teaching a listening lesson in English

For a period teaching of grammar and vocabulary, it consists of three stages:

Presentation- Practice - Production And so is the listening period: Pre-listening, listening and Post -listening.These stages not only help

While-students understand the lesson but also help them use listening skill in real

communication However, the most important thing is that teacher needs to define clearly the aim of each listening period to orient for students to carry out missions well

in the next stages

1 1Warm-up:

A listening period will become effective if teachers know how to make the lessonmore lively, interesting and attract students One of the first important things is to prepare well for " Warm-up" activity There are some activities for " Warm-up" which teachers can apply with the aim to make listening period attractive and effective

- Asking and answering

- Using pictures

-Games

The three above methods that we can apply for " Warm-up" activities for the

listening period more effective

2.1.Pre- listening techniques ( Presentation)

Trang 7

6The aim of the activities in this stage is to help students concentrate on the theme

or situation , especially to guess the information which will be listened In order to overcome difficulties in listening , teachers need to introduce theme , situation , context related to the listening, to get to know if students knew or doesn't know anything about what they will hear, make them excited about activities of the lessons

There are some techiniques for us to apply for pre-listening:

- True / False state prediction

- Open prediction

- Ordering

-Pre- questions

3 1.While listening techniques ( Practice)

The aim of the activities in this stage is to help students practise listening skill , it meansthat through oral , we approach information

Let students listen and do exercises , if the last part , teacher requires students guess the context , we should ask them compare the listened part with what they have predicted before

For difficult listening , the teachers are able to divide into different levels( from easy to difficult) For long listening, the teachers can change into different exercises , depend on students' level There are some techniques:

- Selecting

-Deliberate mistaken

- Grids

-Listening and draw

Apart from above techniques, teachers can use others:

+ Defining True / False

+ Check the correct answer

Trang 8

+ Matching 7+ Filling in the grip/ chart/ gap

+ Answering comprehension questions

4 1.Post listening techniques ( Production)

The aim of this task is to:

-Check whether students understand the information as required and complete the task

in " While -listening" or not

- Find out the causes that make students can not listen or do not understand

anything in the lesson

- Help students to have chance to estimate expressive attitude of native speakers in tapescript through communication intonation

- Use enlarged exercises according to the theme of the listening lessons to further

practice in listening

2.Some experience applied in teaching the listening skill in Unit 3 – A party , Unit

16 – The wonders of the world(English 11)

In this part , I give some examples about applying above methods in the process ofsome listening lessons English 11 (basic) :

Unit 3: A party

Lesson : Listening

Aims: Help students to listen to the understanding of the passage about a

birthday party and listen for specific details

Warm-up: In this part , I use pictures of a party and ask students what they see in the

pictures

Trang 9

BIRTHDAY PARTY

Trang 10

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

9

WEDDING DAY

After that , I will ask students some questions:

- What are the pictures about?

-When do these events take place ?

-Are the people happy these days?

Through the picture and questions , students can know the aim of the lesson

Pre-listening( Presentation)

- I present some neccessary words related to the listening lesson

-In this stage, I use missing words prediction for students to be eager for listening

1.Mai’s birthday party was held at home ………

2…….twenty guests were at the birthday party

Trang 11

3.The birthday cake was cut at the …… of the party 104.The birthday party lasted about …… hours.

5………… stayed after the party to tidy up the mess

While- Listening ( Practice)

Task 1: Listen to the passage and fill in the missing information.

In this task , I ask students see the above True / False to be able to do this task

easily After that I play the tape two times and get students to work in pairs to listen to the passage and do True or False

After listening, I invite some students to give answers Then , I play the CD one more time for students to check ( if neccessary)

Expected answer: 1 F ( in the evening – in the afternoon)

1 in the afternoon 2 about 3 At 4.30

4 three 5 Only the writer

Task 2: Listen again and answer the questions.

For this kind of task , it is difficult for students to both listen and answer, so I deliver handouts

For weak and average students , I tell them there are seven questions and the answers to the questions which are put in the wrong order

The handouts:

A While Mai was cutting the cake, they clapped their hands and sang “Happy birthday”

Trang 12

B.Mai was sixteen years old 11

C The birthday party finished at about six in the evening

D She didn’t like having her party at a restaurant because it’s noisy and expensive

E The birthday cake was brought at the beginning of the party

F Mai’s mother served the guests soft drink and biscuits at the beginning of the party

G The birthday cake was beautifully decorated with pink And white icing.

I let students listen to the passage ( twice) and find out correct answers to the questions

For good students , I require them to listen and answer the questions, and then they compaire the answers in pairs After that, I call students to write answers on the board

1 Mai was sixteen years old.

2 She didn’t like having her party at a restaurant because it’s noisy and expensive

3 Mai’s mother served the guests soft drink and biscuits at the beginning of the party

4 The birthday cake was brought at the beginning of the party

5 The birthday cake was beautifully decorated with pink And white icing.

6 While Mai was cutting the cake, they clapped their hands and sang “Happy birthday”

7 The birthday party finished at about six in the evening.

Production (Post listening): Guessing the game.

I divide the class into groups of five or six: choose one of the party to talk about, try to guess as much information on the game as possible The other groups guess the name ofthe party

Suggested ideas:

-It is popular every where
