I INTRODUCTION

1 The reason to choose the theme

The world is increasingly turning into a global zone where communicatingbecomes imperative As a consequence of this globalization, a commonlanguage should be spoken to enable interaction English is an essential means

of communication between different places which bridges cultures and lifestyles However, “What do we learn in a language course?” or, moreimportantly, “how do we communicate with this language?” are two significantquestions in language teaching

As we see the magic of human beings is to use language not only tocommunicate but also to combine language sounds to create something that stirsthe heart and mind that we called music Thus, in the native language teaching ingeneral and teaching foreign language - English is very interesting and effective

if we use some songs fit into the specific language

In fact, most of these students are into singing, it was demonstrated in thedetails of their favorite music lessons Especially, if they can sing a song inEnglish language not only brings excitement of learning that languageknowledge but it is also etched forever in their minds Because of these

concerns, I have boldly chosen the theme: “Using songs as a motivational way

of teaching English for students - grade 11” with the purpose of improving the

effectiveness of teaching and learning English to students grade 11 in my highschool This is the main reason that I choose this theme

2 The purpose of choosing the theme

Motivation is vital in language learning process because it determineswhether the action of foreign language acquisition is undertaken by the learnerand to what extent he is ready to continue this effort This is the cause why somany scientists and researcher have devoted a great deal of attention tomotivation Moreover, there are many ways that we can use to encourage the

students to study English better, but I mention to the most effective one: Using songs of teaching English We can employ the use of songs, to enrich

vocabularies, make grammar lessons and activities interesting, memorable, motivating and meaningful

3 Object of the research

- Students from class 11 D, E school year: 2021 - 2022

4 Methods of the research

- Get experience from colleagues through their teaching.

- Search information to the website, articles or reference books.

- Using methods of observing, evaluating, comparing and synthesizing the

situation and learning results of students after the periods using songs in lessons

5 New points in the research

English is taught through songs, but applying it to the general curriculummust be very limited Through the teaching process, I found that the method ofteaching English through songs, has really affirmed its superior effectiveness. This method not only brings success with English for children, English for high

school students, but also promotes strengths with academic English that can beapplied to all levels of education Teaching English through songs builds a love

of foreign languages for all ages It will help learners improve their listeningability, practice, pronounce each word, know more new words and phrases, andavoid boredom while learning This helps students gain confidence in their ownlanguage, help them have an environment where they know how to use languagefreely, discover new things that is not found in books

II CONTENTS

1 Theoretical bases

Jeremy Harmer, a writer of book in the field of teaching language namemusic “a powerful stimulus” for language learning He classifies the songs asone of the tools for teaching English intelligently It is a versatile technique, as itenables the teacher to present words graphically (printed song lyrics), verbally(listening to the song) and contextually (song lyrics ) at the same time The songcan change the student’s mood and it can positively influence their stimulationfor English learning

The song can make a satisfactory connection between the world of leisureand the world of learning Students memorize vocabulary more willingly that islinked to real life situations, their own experience and interests, so theyremember it for a longer period of time Of course, the song can also be used forpracticing correct pronunciation, accent and intonation, as well as the grammarstructures

b Toward students:

Most of my students do not like English Students in my school major innatural science subjects They don’t like social science subjects English is nottheir favorite

3 Solution

* Preparation:

a Toward students:

- Students are expected to discover songs related to content of the lessons

from different source of music

b Toward teacher:

- Prepare lesson content so that it is most logical.

- Prepare necessary equipments for teaching: projector, speaker, relevant

songs from various source, prepared - activities which suitable for currentlesson

- Requires students to find outs songs related to lessons.

* Measures to teach English through songs successfully.

1 Planning for the use of songs in class.

- Define whether a lesson focusing on vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation,

Trang 5

“Happy New Year” are quite good to motivate students Students can be quite

excited when they feel what they learnt can apply to the real life

2 Think about the language level of class.

- The language level of class will determine not only which songs teacher

can use, but also what other activities – such as games or written exercises –teacher her will use to develop the lesson Lower levels will become extremelyfrustrated with fast-delivered lyrics, for instance, while simple repetitive lyricsmight not be interesting for more advanced-level learners

3 Finding the sources to find out the songs:

- Teachers can find the songs to teach students from many sources as

books, newspapers, magazines, disks, radio and especially, internet

* Procedures:

a Some activities using songs to motivate students to learn English.

Over the years teaching reform program - English 11 - standard program - Ihave redesigned some activities in using of songs of teaching as follows:

1 Warm-up

- Using music is considered as a nice lead-in to the lesson For example, the

song Reaching The Stars by Janine Weigel, the official song of 18th ASIAD isplayed to provoke students to warm up Unit 12 – The Asian Games (grade 11)

2 Changing the mood

- Music can affect your students’ mood, so teacher can play some slowermusic to calm them down after stressful moment Alternatively, if the studentshad been seated almost silently during the previous lesson, it’s a good idea toplay some lively music

3 Grammar

- Songs can also serve as a springboard for discussing a particular grammar

point One way is to ask students to look through the lyrics and find someexamples of a grammar structure If teaching adjectives, try to choose songs

with lots of adjectives in the lyrics such as Len ka’s “Everything at once” If

practicing, for instance, the relative clauses and the participles replacing relativeclauses, students to listen and underline the relative clauses and the participlesreplacing relative clauses in the verses The song which works well with my

students is “That’s why you go away” by Michael Learns To Rock.

4 Vocabulary and Pronunciation

Music can also serve as a powerful tool in teaching new vocabulary andpronunciation Students do not learn vocabulary in isolation, but in a specificcontext, with the words associated with it Teachers can use songs to teachvocabulary, pronunciation at the beginning of thelessons as warm - up activities or after the lessons like post parts to revise the

vocabulary and pronunciation The song “Give me something to eat” to warm

the lesson up or pre - teaching the words related to Halloween in unit 8 –Celebration – Part A (grade 11)
