CONDITIONAL SENTENCES WITH TYPES OF EXERCISES
AND MOTIVATIONAL WAYS OF DOING THEM
1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Rationale
According to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training, from the academic year of 2006, implementing the form of multiple-choice tests for English subjects at the high school graduation exams and university and college exams nationwide With this form of examination , in the current high school English program, the conditional sentence is a very important part of knowledge in the graduation exams and university and college exams However, students often have confusion about the usage of conditional sentences and
expressions instead of if Therefore, in order to do well on multiple-choice
exercises about conditional sentences, students need to understand the problems Basically, relating to conditional sentences, and changing written exercises into multiple choice exercises , students need to master the knowledge and some tips
to do exercises effectively Before that situation, I choose the topic
“Conditional Sentences with types of exercises and motivational ways of doing them”.
1.2.Aims of the study
- Helping students master the form and use of types of conditional sentences
- Helping students understand the problems relating to types of conditional sentences
- Helping students do types of exercises well
1.3 Objects of the study
- Types of conditional sentences and the problems relating to them such as
form, inversion, usage and expressions instead of if.
- Types of exercises about conditional sentences
1.4 Methods of the study
To achieve the aims of the study, the study uses :
- research method of building theoretical basis
I use this method to list some structures, inversion ,usage, and expressions
instead of if.
- methods of analysis and data processing
I use this method to clarify the nature of English conditional sentences
- descriptive and comparative methods
Trang 4I use this method to distinguish the types of English conditional sentences.
2 THE CONTENTS OF EXPERIENTIAL INITIATIVE
2.1 The theoretical basis of experiential initiative
Regarding this topic, in the theoretical section I will mention some of the following: [1]
- Definition of conditional sentences
- Types of conditional sentences
- Conditionals can be introduced with other expressions instead of “if”
2.1.1.Definition of conditional sentences [2], [6]
- Conditional sentences are used to state a hypothesis about an event, which is possible only when the said condition occurs Conditional sentences consist of
two parts (two clauses): [6]
The clause stating the condition (also known as the IF clause) is a
subordinate clause or a conditional clause
The result clause is the main clause
EX : If it rains , I will stay at home
(If clause – main clause)
- Two clauses in a conditional sentence can be interchanged: if the main clause comes first, there should be no comma between the two clauses, otherwise, there must be a comma in between two clauses
Example: You will pass the exam if you work hard
=> If you work hard, you will pass the exam
2.1.2.Types of Conditional Sentence in English [4] ,[5]
* Conditional Sentence type 1 : Real situations in the present or future
Form , inversion and usage [4] ,[5]
Form
If clause , main clause
Usage
1 Ìf + S + V(present), S + will /shall/can/may + V
- If Martin gets the job , he will move to Oxford
Real or probable situations in the present or future
2 Ìf + S + V(present), S + V( present simple)
- If you mix blue and yellow , you get green
Gereral truths(if = when,whenever)
3 Ìf + S + V(present), V + (0)
- If you miss the train , take the bus
Instructions or commands
4 Ìf + S + should +V , S + will /shall/can/may + V
-If it should rain tonight , I will stay at home
If there is only a slight possibility of somthing happening
Trang 55 Ìf + S + should +V , V + (0)
- If Mary should see you , give her my best regards
6 Inversion
Should + S + V , S + will /shall/can/may + V
V + (0)
-Should Mary see you , give her my best regards
If can be omitted , Should come before
the subject
Note :
If – clause either precede or follow the main clause If they precede the main clause , we separate them with a comma
EX : If you eat a lot sweets, you’ll gain weight
But : You’ll gain weight if you eat a lot sweets
*Conditional Sentence type 2 : Unreal situations in the present
Form , inversion and usage [4] ,[5]
Form
If clause , main clause
Usage
1 Ìf + S + V(past), S + would /could/ might + V
- If he were still living with his parents , he would be
able to save more money
- If I won a lot of money , I would spend most of it
travelling round the world
-Unreal or imaginary situations in the present
-Events that are unlikely to happen in the future
2 Ìf +S +were +N /Adj ,S+would /could/ might + V
- She wouldn’t get bad marks if she were studious
- If I were you , I wouldn’t argue with my empluer
-Were is used with all
persons in formal English
-To give advice
3 Inversion
Were +S+ N /Adj/To V ,S+would /could/ might + V
-Were I your brother , I would go abroad
-Were she taller , she could become a model
-Were I to win a lot of money , I would spend most
of it travelling round the world
If can be omitted , Were come before the
subject
*Conditional Sentence type 3: Unreal situations in the past
Form , inversion and usage [4] ,[5]
Trang 6
If clause , main clause
Usage
1 Ìf + S + had+ S + would /could/ might + have + pp
- If If I had known tour phone number , he would
have called you
2 If +S +had + been + V-ing , S+would /could/
might + heve + pp
- If Sue had been driving slowly , she wouldn’t have
had an accident
- If I had been more careful , I would have passed the
driving test
-To express actions that did not happen in the past
-To express regret
3 Inversion
-Had+S+(not)+pp,S +would /could/ might+have + pp
EX : Had you arrived earlier , you would have met
my grandmother
- Had+ S + (not)+ been + V-ing , S+would /could/
might + heve + pp
EX : Had Sue been driving slowly , she wouldn’t
have had an accident
If can be omitted , Had come before the
subject
* Mixed conditionals :
Form , inversion and usage[4] ,[5]
Mixed conditionals do not follow the tense rules strictly , we can make combinations according to the context
Form
If clause , main clause
Usage
1.Ìf +S+V (past) ,S +would /could/ might +have + pp
- If I had a car , I would have picked you up from yhe
airport
-Combination between conditional sentence type 2 and conditional sentence type 3
2 Ìf +S+had +pp ,S +would /could/ might +V
- If you had taken some aspirin , you would feel
better now
-Combination between conditional sentence type 3 and conditional sentence type 2
3 Inversion
Had + S + pp ,S +would /could/ might +V
If can be omitted , Had come before the
subject
Trang 72.1.3 Conditionals can be introduced with other expressions instead of “if” [3],[4]
Other words instead
of “if”

(= imagine if)
Suppose / supposing the lights went out , what would you do ?
Even if He wouldn’t talk about hjis plans even if you begged
him to Whether Whether he agrees with me or not is not important to
me
With + N With your help ,I could finish this assignment
Without + N Without your help ,I couldn’t finish this assignment
2.1.4 Types of exercises and motivational ways of doing them.
