T h e r e s o l u t i o n of l o c a l s y n t a c t i c

a m b i g u i t y by the H u m a n S e n t e n c e P r o c e s s i n g

M e c h a n i s m is a t o p i c w h i c h h a s p r o v o k e d

c o n s i d e r a b l e i n t e r e s t in r e c e n t y e a r s A t

i s s u e is w h e t h e r s u c h a m b i g u i t i e s a r e

r e s o l v e d on t h e b a s i s of s y n t a c t i c

i n f o r m a t i o n a l o n e (cf M i n i m a l A t t a c h m e n t

F r a z i e r , 1979), or w h e t h e r t h e y a r e

r e s o l v e d o n s o m e o t h e r b a s i s C r a i n &

S t e e d m a n (1982) s u g g e s t t h a t the

r e s o l u t i o n p r o c e s s is g o v e r n e d n o t by

M i n i m a l A t t a c h m e n t b u t i n s t e a d by w h e t h e r

s u g g e s t i o n s h a v e b e e n m a d e c o n c e r n i n g

t h i s O n e s u g g e s t i o n , o r i g i n a l l y p r o p o s e d

by K i m b a l l (1973) a n d f o l l o w e d up m o r e

r e c e n t l y by F r a z i e r (1979) a n d R a y n e r ,

C a r l s o n , & F r a z i e r (1983), is t h a t t h e

H S P M t a k e s i n t o a c c o u n t t h e s y n t a c t i c
