II – Plan of internship program
As an accounting student with a passion for Japanese culture, I pursued an internship with JP Park Group, a company specializing in construction and Japanese garden design After researching the market and submitting my application, I was fortunate to be accepted into the program The internship lasted six months, from January 2021 to June 2021, during which I undertook diverse tasks and made a concerted effort to apply the knowledge I had gained in my studies while enhancing my professional skills.
During peak internship season at PKF, when many clients’ fiscal year-ends drive activity, I began with a training session led by Mr Hiep on Vietnam’s legal documents The session covered Decree 132/ND-CP, which regulates tax administration for enterprises with related-party transactions and clarifies deductible versus non-deductible items for affiliate companies, along with key Circulars such as Circular 200/2014/TT-BTC guiding corporate accounting; Circular 78/2014/TT-BTC guiding corporate income tax; Circular 219/2013/TT-BTC guiding value-added tax; and Circular 48/2019/TT-BTC providing guidance on making and settling provisions for devaluation of inventory, losses of financial investments, bad debts, and warranties at enterprises He then showed me how to apply these Circulars to real client cases, translating theory into practical guidance for each engagement.
The following day, Mr Ngai trained us on performing a physical verification of cash on hand, fixed assets, and inventories at the fiscal year end During the session, he shared practical insights and techniques for this process He also guided us in building relationships with customers and engaging with them throughout the audit period.
During the period of my internship, I preformed the different tasks in different areas of the PKF Co which are the following:
3 The preparation of the audited financial statements.
I started my internship as junior trainee My three months training enabled me learn a lot about accounting, taxation, auditing, management consultancy and corporate affairs Although three 7
Although a few months is a tight window to master accounting and auditing, my time at PKF Co offered a golden opportunity to learn valuable lessons beyond the numbers, including Corporate Law and Income Tax The work at the firm clarified my concepts in accounting and auditing, and the guidance from colleagues, alongside the firm's robust working papers system, provided all the information I needed to support my development and daily tasks.
During my internship, I follow the steps outlined by my supervisor, completing a range of tasks tied to the main components of the financial statements—cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and taxes This role requires careful adherence to established procedures as I process transactions, reconcile accounts, and ensure accurate reporting under supervision By handling cash movements, managing receivables and payables, and supporting tax-related activities, I contribute to reliable financial statements and gain hands-on experience in core finance functions.
Some of the responsibilities and duties are for example as the following:
North import-export branch
Time to participate in the fieldwork: From January 21, 2021 to January 23, 2021
Location: No 11B Cat Linh, Dong Da District, Hanoi City.
The items are assigned during the audit process:
- Cash and cash equivalent: accounts 111, 112, 113, 128
Under the guidance of the leader, I have gained a solid understanding of the audit process, including how to review the listed items, collect credible audit evidence, and collaborate effectively within a team.
For Cash and Cash Equivalents, I compared the current year's opening balance with the ending balance in the prior year's audited report, and I verified the closing balance against the cash count minutes, the bank reconciliation, the bank confirmation, and the general ledger I also reevaluated foreign currency–denominated deposits, selected several major transactions in the period for confirmation, prepared confirmation letters, and checked for any negative cash fund issues.
- With Held-to-maturity Investment: I have collected loan contracts, comparing opening and closing balances, estimating loan interest, and classifying short-term and long-term investments;

Regarding Financial Income and Other Income, I reviewed reciprocal accounts 515 and 711 to identify any abnormal balances, analyzed monthly fluctuations to detect unusual movements, and inspected liquidation documents in conjunction with the related invoices and tax declarations to ensure alignment and accuracy.
Thang Loi Hotel Joint Stock Company
Participation period: From February 25, 2021 to February 27, 2021 Location:
No 200, Yen Phu, Yen Phu ward, Tay Ho district, Hanoi
The tasks assigned in the audit process:
During the audit at the Company, I gained experience by being assigned to audit the specified components Mr Ninh assigned me to audit accounts similar to those delivered to previous customers, so I followed the same procedures Additionally, there were some new parts to examine.
Accounts receivable auditing involved comparing the opening balance to the previous year's audit report, issuing a confirmation letter, re-evaluating foreign currency balances, performing cut-off testing, and collecting year-end payment vouchers As this is a new practice, I’m still developing the ability to complete all tasks proficiently, so I will consult the team on the required audit procedures to enable me to perform these steps more effectively in future audits for this and other customers.
- With Account payables: I have compared the beginning of the period with the audit report of the previous year and making a confirmation letter.
- With Statutory obligations: I have compared the output tax and the input tax arising in the year on the declaration with the books, thereby identifying the difference.

Managing accrual expenses involves comparing the opening balance, recalculating the prepaid expense allocation schedule, and confirming whether costs are posted to account 242 If expenses are fully allocated yet amortization continues during the period, I investigate timing mismatches and adjust allocations accordingly I verify that instruments are classified correctly as assets and ensure proper asset treatment, and I conclude by comparing the closing balance with the residual value on the account to validate the accuracy of the financial statements.
Truong Son Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company
Participation period: From March 1, 2021 to March 5, 2021
Location: Chau Son Industrial zone, Chau Son ward, Phu Ly city, Ha Nam province
The tasks assigned in the audit process:
- The part of money operation: includes accounts 111, 112
- Part of expense: including accounts 641, 642
Experience gained during the company audit showed that I was assigned to audit the aforementioned components, which significantly deepened my understanding of the audit process I have since applied the same procedures consistently in subsequent audits, leveraging the insights gained from earlier work In addition, new components have been introduced to the audit scope, expanding the areas I review and ensuring a comprehensive assessment.
Regarding the advance payment, I verified the balance, prepared a confirmation letter, and conducted a thorough review of all details I also ensured that the refund deadline complies with the unit's financial regulations.
In the expense section, I verify that expenses are correctly classified by reviewing invoices and I closely examine all bank-processed cash payments above 20 million VND, ensuring they comply with the company’s financial regulations and identifying large transactions associated with selling and administrative expenses.

Translation year-end report into English
Additionally, I participated in translating the Vietnamese audited financial statements into English, ensuring fidelity to the PKF format I learned the Vietnamese Chart of Accounts by heart and translated each statement step by step in Microsoft Excel An example of the translated income statement is attached in the appendix.
SWOT analysis
PKF Vietnam has built a robust management system in which departments are closely interconnected under the leadership of the Board of Directors, enabling the company's operations to run more effectively and efficiently This integrated structure supports clear accountability, streamlined workflows, and strategic alignment across the organization.
PKF Vietnam organizes all tasks and duties across clearly defined departments and divisions, with staff recruited for high specialization to ensure smooth workflow and accelerated progress, supporting strong performance as the client base grows in size and diversifies The firm operates two core audit segments: Basic Construction Auditing and Financial Statements Auditing The Construction Auditing department is led by a professional director specializing in auditing finished construction projects and construction items, while the Financial Statements Auditing department focuses on auditing the financial statements of manufacturing, service, and trading companies, among others.
An online management structure enables company leaders to quickly grasp current operations and identify the obstacles the business must overcome, boosting timely decision-making and strategic clarity This approach works best for smaller firms with relatively few departments, where streamlined oversight enhances efficiency and responsiveness PKF’s leadership style prioritizes morale-boosting and flexible guidance over rigid regulations, helping to drive higher efficiency across the workforce.

Human resources and personnel management
PKF Vietnam recognizes human resources as the decisive factor for its success and places strong emphasis on ongoing training and skill development for its employees The firm has established a Board of Control and a Training Committee to elevate qualifications through regular training programs, new updates, and internal seminars led by senior professionals with deep expertise in auditing, finance, accounting, and consulting It prioritizes recruiting young talent, especially graduates from accounting and auditing majors at specialized universities, and actively builds partnerships with universities in Hanoi to secure high-quality resources and strengthen the labor pool Additionally, the Board of Directors allocates dedicated time for staff to pursue professional certificates such as CPA and ACCA, or even Master’s programs, and supports full funding of these fees to encourage long-term commitment to the audit profession.
PKF follows a robust working paper process that enhances the effectiveness and quality of every audit In performing audits, PKF strictly adheres to Vietnamese Auditing Standards alongside International Auditing Standards to ensure alignment with global best practices The audit plan and the design of the audit program are developed separately yet tightly coordinated, so planning outputs optimize execution, reduce time consumption and unnecessary costs, and result in a comprehensive audit plan This integrated approach delivers high-quality, efficient audits that meet both local and international requirements.
An audit program is designed and drafted according to the company's templates, with detailed working steps for each item After collecting the necessary information, the auditor executes the program to guide the steps, ensuring accuracy and consistency throughout the audit process Working papers are organized from general to detailed, moving from conclusions to specific audit evidence In each audit profile, the summary page always appears first, followed by the audit conclusion page, then the audit program, and finally the auditor's notes.
Downloading TIEU LUAN MOI is streamlined through a centralized platform that collects working papers along with the final documents submitted by customers This organized repository makes it easy for both users and auditors to review issues quickly, thanks to a smart arrangement of files that improves clarity, traceability, and efficiency throughout the review process For access and download assistance, you can reach out to skknchat@gmail.com.
PKF Vietnam follows a rigorous framework of audit-document controls that governs the preparation and issuance of audit reports The process includes a comprehensive review of the auditor, the board of management, and the board of quality; approval of new audit contracts; a formal commitment to independence; verification of the content of the audit report; and approvals for release, review, preparation, and archival of audit reports and management letters It also encompasses the ongoing assessment of accounting and auditing staff development.
To ensure the audit report meets quality standards, it undergoes a pre-release review, with auditors consistently adhering to the regulations and procedures that govern the review process before issuance.
PKF Vietnam's management structure currently faces a notable limitation, emphasizing the initial stage of customer acquisition The client base is largely composed of long-standing customers maintained over the years, while the yearly influx of new clients is relatively modest, and most new contracts are secured by members of the Board of Directors.
Personnel assignment and employee remuneration
Audit team allocation is optimized to be as efficient as possible However, with the surge of new client engagements and limited auditor headcount, we face significant constraints in staffing each engagement with the right number of auditors Since auditing engagements run consecutively and require sustained time, this persistent workload makes it difficult to assign sufficient auditors to every job.
Although there are numerous incentives to attract talent, retain a stable workforce, and continuously improve skills through supplementary training, the current salary and bonus framework remains underpaid relative to employee performance and should be adjusted to align compensation with contributions In addition, clear and supportive conditions for sponsorship and training of professional certificates are needed to enhance career development and ensure access to essential certifications.
A policy requiring employees to stay with the company for at least two years can sap motivation and engagement, making staff less enthusiastic about long-term commitment and potentially boosting the company's turnover rate This approach may deter talent, lower morale, and ultimately hurt retention and overall performance.
PKF Vietnam's audit teams currently rely on the existing audit program, which offers certain advantages but reduces flexibility when auditing individual clients Consequently, auditors must tailor procedures to match each client's business characteristics Moreover, due to cost and time constraints, PKF Vietnam has not been able to design industry-specific audit programs for different clients, resulting in obstacles and longer cycles for collecting audit evidence and diminishing the overall effectiveness of the audit procedures.
Accessing and collecting client business information is a crucial task for auditing firms At PKF Vietnam, time constraints often push traditional audits to rely on prior-year records, causing auditors to skip gathering additional information from the press and other sources This reliance can lead to omissions of critical data that could affect audit results, underscoring the need to incorporate up-to-date external information into the audit process to improve accuracy.
Operational problems
Efficient operational processes are critical for an audit firm like PKF Vietnam, delivering benefits such as fair pricing for clients and higher revenue Yet PKF Vietnam faces challenges in deploying a consistent, resource‑efficient workflow across hands‑on audits Direct interviews with staff reveal difficulties applying end‑to‑end procedures for each assignment, leading to skipped steps in working papers and reliance on updated information for smaller, long‑standing clients to save time The working paper system currently relies heavily on manual Excel processes, which are time‑consuming, while Big4 competitors are investing in high‑tech systems to automate core tasks We are in the Industry 4.0 era and moving toward Industry 5.0, so continuing with traditional methods limits productivity PKF should invest in new technology and learn from other firms to stay current, improve efficiency, and sustain competitiveness.

Suggested solution
Due to limitations in the number of customers together, establishing a department specializing in media, image promotion, customer search and acquisition is essential to improving the company's business performance If the company cannot open a separated marketing department, it can attract clients indirectly via its staffs by creating a remuneration policy that encourages each employee in the company to find customers, thereby earning commissions for every contract that they are the middleman.
Personnel assignment and employee remuneration
Due to the limited number of auditors, the company encountered many difficulties in allocating personnel for audits Moreover, the company has a plan to expand consulting services in the coming time, thus it is necessary to have a plan to recruit and train a new auditor to meet the actual needs of the company, ensuring both quantity and quality Concurrently, the company also needs to promote regular training, improve the expertise and professional ethics for auditors’ team.
Improving audit quality at PKF Vietnam requires a stronger focus on human resources, especially retaining experienced and certified auditors The relocation of seasoned staff remains a long-standing challenge, and although annual new hires help address short-term shortages, this solution is merely temporary Auditing demands substantial experience and professionalism, so even capable newcomers may not meet all job requirements To tackle this, PKF Vietnam should implement a competitive remuneration policy that rewards valuable contributors and supports targeted retention and development programs to stabilize the workforce and sustain audit quality.
Income is a fundamental factor in human resources, linked to the direct benefits employees receive and a key lever for attracting talent in the auditing industry The company should implement a fair, competitive salary policy that rewards value, performance, and commitment, ensuring parity across roles Compensation must be based on working capacity, level of contribution, and actual working hours, aligning pay with performance and making income a tangible benefit for employees and a strategic asset for the organization.
TIEU LUAN MOI download : skknchat@gmail.com
PKF Vietnam should allocate a dedicated budget to develop a detailed audit plan for specific customers, a move that may raise upfront costs but can boost audit quality, enhance the company’s reputation, and help attract new clients as outstanding audit work becomes a powerful referral source Audit records should be organized and stored in a centralized, secure repository that makes them easy to locate, retrieve, and audit while maintaining confidentiality Upgrading information technology networks to increase storage capacity and digitize records will reduce reliance on traditional paper libraries and offices, lowering costs and improving archival efficiency over time.
Skills learned
From this internship at PKF Vietnam, I have learned that soft skills are the most valuable asset for a successful career My biggest takeaway is the long-term relationships and connections I built with colleagues and fellow interns, which have expanded my professional network I also gained deeper insights into the audit industry, enriching my career planning and helping me understand the career path of an auditor This experience has given me a realistic view of the opportunities and challenges in auditing, enabling me to make an informed and strategic career decision.
Efficient document management and handling of technical issues have made me more prudent and patient, while refining my communication with clients, colleagues, and managers By providing clear information and asking precise questions, I ensure stakeholders understand and respond promptly Strong time management is a core discipline in my workflow, ensuring all working papers are completed by the end of each day.
Securing an internship at PKF has been a huge opportunity, providing practical experience beyond what I learned in university courses It has sharpened my Microsoft Office skills—skills I hadn't fully developed in school—and these fundamental abilities are helping me work more smoothly as I approach graduation.

Knowledge acquired
Auditing is more complex than accounting, requiring analysis of diverse items within financial statements Thanks to Hanoi University coursework—Principles of Accounting, Vietnamese Accounting System, Audited Financial Statements, Vietnamese Tax, and related modules—I gained a solid foundation and quickly became familiar with PKF’s working papers system During my internship, I relied most on Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word to perform tasks efficiently With a background in Computer Science and Business Modeling, I could work smartly by leveraging advanced functions and shortcut tips Overall, university courses provided a broad base from finance to accounting that prepared me for professional practice.
Observed attitudes and gained value
During my internship in the audit department, I learned that attitude is the most critical quality for an intern with limited experience, as companies gauge early potential through how we approach tasks—from small assignments to detailed analyses In a peak-season industry, mentors are often busy, leaving little time for direct guidance, so I adapted by observing a dynamic, open-minded environment and learned to pace myself and harmonize with the team Working in a collaborative setting underscored the importance of asking questions immediately whenever something is unclear, and when issues arise we address them right away instead of letting problems linger This proactive approach broadened our knowledge, built practical experience, and fostered a strong spirit of teamwork and a willingness to learn, shaping my professional habits and shaping my future success.
Challenging task performed
The most challenging part has been understanding the Vietnamese accounting and auditing system since I was an English-taught Bachelor of Accounting student As an undergraduate, I realized I needed to research more about Vietnamese accounting and auditing During internships, I regularly deal with Vietnamese legal documents, and mastering each Vietnamese academic term takes extra time, slowing my task progression I also have to manage a large volume of accounting documents and learn to detect mistakes and deficiencies These experiences highlight the ongoing need to build expertise in Vietnamese accounting, auditing standards, and compliance to improve performance in real-world tasks.
Joining the Audit 3 department brought a steep learning curve and long hours driven by time-sensitive client needs, making the early days challenging; however, supportive colleagues and patient mentors invested time to guide me, share best practices, and help me grow.
Working in an audit firm was a core career goal during my undergraduate studies, and I’m grateful to have finished my degree with such a formative experience The firm’s flexible environment and supportive professionals made me feel at home, where we could balance rigorous client work with a sense of purpose in serving the nation and its people Although three months isn’t enough to master all facets of auditing, the relationships I built became a valuable lifelong asset, with teammates who were willing to teach and mentor me I had the chance to collaborate with a range of local and international companies, hitting several learning milestones and gaining practical insight into professional practice Yet challenges persisted, as my coach’s busy schedule limited formal training, and independent auditing proved broader than classroom lessons, prompting me to commit to deeper reading and continued study in this field.
I am deeply grateful for the lecturers and the academic programs of the Faculty of Management and Tourism at Hanoi University The comprehensive education I received there has built a strong foundation in management and tourism, and I am confident I will become a meticulous auditor in the near future.
